OcUK Ryzen 9 3950X review thread

Not mainstream, for sure, can't be mainstream. Just marketing fluff... :D

"If you are building a high-end DIY PC, and are in need of a seriously proper performing streaming, content creating and/or gaming processor at a fair budget, well yes, at 749 I really can't say it's not a lot of money, but heck the value certainly is there."

Not much more than half what you'd pay for the same high end GFX card!
Super.

Curious that the reviews I saw showed the 3950x and 3900x tied as the fastest Adobe encode, but why are they virtually the same? Adobe codebase quirks?
Adobe's archaic codebase in Premiere and After Effects doesn't scale in any meaningful way past 10 cores, so since it doesn't really know the difference between 12 and 16 cores, the 3900X and 3950X will essentially perform identically.

Adobe are an example of a company with huge past success who now do little to improve their products because its easier and cheaper to ride their brand mindshare.

Adobe to me seems to stuck with the bloat of old compatibility /methods and adding more on top as patching rather than going back to basics and a ground up re-write and ditching the old stuff.

I went to Affinity Photo which is a much newer ground up written program and it really feels like that compared to Photoshop.

As for multicore use, there are a few threads on multicore use in Affinity Photo by the designers and the acknowledge that where they can make CPU work parallel they will, but it can't apply to 100% of the workload and so there is a realistic limit to benefits of more cores.

I love resolve. I can’t believe you can get such a powerful video editor for free. It’s easier to use than premiere too.

This is all well and good but for the design agencies / freelancers who use after effects / premiere / Photoshop / InDesign and share files and collaborate with other agencies it's very much a industry standard.

I guess they know this so milk it more. Of course the other programs are fantastic if you're just working on your own personal projects.

Premiere is a Buggy piece of software but unfortunately I have to use this as it's part of my agencies work flow

We're going wildly OT but anyway ... that sort of thinking will be the undoing of them in the long term. It's just complacency.

This thing draws less power than the 12-core 3900X? I'm trying to wrap my hesd around that.

At least half of the 3900x uses low quality cores , where as the entire 3950X uses heavily binned cores. Because it needs better silicon and is binned so highly, from what I've read 3950x stock will be tight and not that easy to come by so don't be surprised if retailers are selling them even higher than the $750usd RRP

the 3950X is a halo product and not mass market, at least initially some stores report they only got 1 unit in they can sell.

It's a shame not all Adobe products like Media Encoder and After Effects cannot take advantage of it. Exception being Adobe Premiere it seems has improved and can.

I think supply will increase with a bit of time. Initially pricing I think is going to go crazy so if people want one I'd be pre-ordering now (if possible)
The stores get it wrong sometimes. I remember it mentioned OCUK might not get any 9900KS in stock but they've had stock early on and it's not gone out of stock either :).
