OcUK Ryzen APU review thread

No Amazon and there was no sticker confirming raven ridge support. It's the same with all browsers but I think it's a bit better after installing fresh windows, around 80% use with 4K 60 video, forget 8K. The 1030 does it better but this is a tidy little package.

Something is broken. Sometimes 4k60 youtube runs okay with 85% load, other times it hits 100% frequently freezing the video (I think it might depend on the bitrate). 1440p60 youtube is consistent with 60% load.

High bitrate 4k30 mkv files run fine with ~10% load. Suggests something is wrong with the decode codec on youtube.

Could be, I get 80% use for all 4k 60 content with little dropped frames so I'm happy with that, if AMD can improve on the decode side then that's all good. Got to say the Ryzen rig boots and restarts/shutsdown way faster than my 8600k rig did...

What about GPU usage? What does the "stats for nerds" of the video say?

Windows only shows the thing undet load, so the video decoder numbers are what I am referring to. GPU-Z shows completely different usage percentages far below 100%.

I think its just a bug which needs to be fixed in the driver. The APU itself should be powerful enough.

Hhhhmm a little underwhelmed with his media playback performance, judging from the comments, hopefully this will improve :).

muon how are you connecting to your display ? as hdmi 1.4 iirc only allows 4k@30fps .. displayport should be better.

4k60 is definitely possible via hdmi. I'm not sure where you are getting a 30fps limit from. Unless you are talking about ancient parts.

It is defintely a decoder load issue. 4k60 HDR desktop outputs fine with the APU. Display and cables have worked fine with video for a multitude of cards I have owned in the last 12 months.

Even gaming with the right settings can reach healthly fps with the APU.

I think this is a limitation of the standard, HDMI pre 1.4b has a 24fps limit for 4k iirc

I'm building a 2400g for my g/friends mum.

I installed windows, and as soon as I install the display driver, everything screws up. The screen is divided in the middle, and the right side is a corruption of the left side. After a few minutes, the whole screen goes blue (not a BSoD) and freezes. No faults logged in the event viewer.

Did you download a new version of Windows 10 or install from and older download or dvd?

Edit: a quick Google shows that a few people have had this issue - top result suggests RMA

I just created a new USB boot stick today, and going to reinstall, and see what happens. It probably was an older win 10 ISO.

I've installed the latest windows 10 1709.
I've also, downloaded all the correct, most up to date drivers for Raven Ridge.
I have problems that start straight after I install the display drivers. I can install the AMD chipset drivers, and untick the display drivers. All is fine. As soon as those display drivers get installed, all hell goes loose.

The only component added, as a spare m.2 256gb (Plextor M6e M.2 PCI-E 256GB Solid state Hard Drive (PX-G256M6e)) drive I had spare, that I'm using for the boot drive. Other than that, the system is as came built.

Sample photos.

No drivers:

With display drivers installed:

PC freezes, with just an empty blue screen, unresponsive:

Any ideas?

Which board and BIOS version are using? And what are the version numbers for the drivers you've installed?

Do you get the same issue if you use an alternate display output? (Assuming the mobo you have gives you a choice...?)

There's quite a few threads for exactly same issue on the AMD community forums at the moment so might be worth heading there for some beta drivers possibly

Have you checked for memory faults?

Using the MSI A320M Grenade. Checked both ram sticks individually in each socket.
I've now identified the problem. I've got a PCIE WiFi card in the slot, and I also used a spare m.2 drive in the m.2 port of the motherboard.

I've removed the m.2 drive, and used a spare 120gb SSD on SATA. Everything booted and worked great after the driver install.
I'm guessing that, i'm consuming too many PICE lanes, for the graphics side of the APU?

Should have 8 lanes which is plenty for both an m.2 drive and pci-e 1x or 4x wifi card.

However, the motherboard bios might not be up to scratch. Try a different PCI-E slot.

For example, with my 2400G I have used an m.2 nvme drive, wifi card and discrete graphics card (gtx 1060) all at once. Although I have got rid of the graphics card now. Board is Asrock A320M Pro4.

MSI had a shambles of Ryzen launch back in March and took ages to fix their motherboards. I wouldn't be surprised if they have bad Raven Ridge bioses at the moment.

Hopefully biting the bullet today on a 2400G. My current HTPC (Gen7 N54L) has a 7450 doing media duties, I assume there isn't a need for this in the new build? I will eventually want to drop in a more powerful GPU further down the line.

2400G ordered, guessing I am going to have to take our my 1700 from my main rig to boot up the Gigabyte mobo and update the BIOS?

EDIT - sorry on an old version of this thread, forgot I was last to post.

It is only really in youtube with 4k60 video. I'm pretty sure its just a driver/software issue.
