OcUK Torch Beamshot Thread

Help me if you will. I need to choose a torch that has a nice long throw (while also being able to offer a wide flood if need be) and for under £70ish. Like the look of the Fenix torches and have heard good things about them. Want something that will also clip onto my belt ideally. What should I be looking at?

Cheers

Did some beamshots tonight.

Solarforce L2r + Solarforce R2 Cree drop in. Tested by others at around 170 lumens.

Maglite 2D with Fusion 36 5mm drop-in. With 6 AA cells in series @ 7.2v using 2x KD 3AA to 1 D cell adapter. Tested by others at around 400 lumens.

The maglite is a beast of light for the money paid. I reach for it for all things bump in the night, having 100% flood is great for filling an area within 50 metres with light. Indoors it sets a room alight with light. - if you can live with the blue tint ;). In real world it doesn't look bad at all.

What sort of Battery would you be powering it with?

If you have 18650s then I'd recommend the Fenix TK12 R5. If AA then the LD20 or Quark AA2 turbo are decent.

Went out and tested my TK12 tonight and it easily lights up objects 100 meters away. Nice flood as well, should be great addition to my bike lighting.

Nice, I'm surprised that 5mm LED's can produce so much light. Would the drop-in also work on a C sized Maglight? Also, I may use 18650's so I'm guessing 2 in series would give a good voltage (between 7v and 8v)? Where can you buy this drop in and how long is the battery life when using AA's?

It is quite surprising how much light it chucks out for with it using 5mm LEDs. The module will handle anything between 3v-9v. The AA to D cell adapters I am using are two of these .

I am not too sure about fitting 18650's into a 2C maglite. Might need to take a look on CPF :)

3-9v sounds ideal. I'm already running 18650's in my 2C maglite, and it works fine. I had to remove the spring but a blob of solder in the tailcap works well. Right now I'm running a maglite bulb from the 6D model as it works well at 7-8v.

Is this the module you used:

I'm quite tempted to order one now as it should be quite a nice upgrade. Roughly how much battery life do you get when running AA's?

That's the one! It looks like they are offering a warmer version of it. Think I may have to snap another one up soonish!

I get around 1hr 45mins runtime on 6x AA 2100mAh Uniross Hybrio.

Post some beamshots if you get one! :)

Ordered. I hope it does actually use Nichia K1 LED's, as many of the cheaper LED's from China tend to fade relatively quickly. My 18650's are around 2200mAh so I should hopefully get a similar runtime to you, almost 2 hours is rather good I think!

I'll post some beamshots once it arrives.

Forgot to add it is also regulated so over those near 2 hours the light is constantly BRIGHT! I misread that you currently use the original mag bulb in your mag, christ there is no comparison! - I think this drop-in will make you smile :D.
