OcUK Torch Beamshot Thread

I have a penguin torch

Sorry guys, not for sale, not even for a billion £'s! It's 1 of a kind.

They're in Halfords now, £4.99. My son bought one this weekend. Really irritating rattle when you pump it to recharge. Nevertheless, there's something satisfying about squeezing a penguin repeatedly to get more power.

Having seen quite a lot of Maglight comparisons in the past all I can say is I'm interested in seeing the results, because quite frankly all the resuts I've seen so far have been terrible.:)

I can't see it putting out a few thousand Lumens either, no where near. The Torches we're talking about in this thread (and the ones shown in the OP "only" put out at max 200L, which is a damn site more than most torches. Also how long does the battery last? And the bulb at that too.
Hi, measured the current using a 55W Osram IRC bulb at it's getting around 80W. IRC bulbs are pretty efficient for a incandescent, and are around 50-60 lumens per watt when overdriven.

80 * 50 = 4000 lumens in theory, I don't have any way of measuring this in practice.

It does put out of a lot of light though, I have a few 100 lumen torches and it's much much brighter.

My batteries are around 5Ah and as it's pulling around 5A so batteries last less than an hour... Which isn't too bad considering how bright it is. It does get rather hot however, I had to replace the plastic reflector and lens with glass and aluminium alternatives, as the plastic ones would melt pretty quickly!

Im waiting for TWFOX to come along with one of these and tell everyone how much better they are than Maglites because they say BMW on them.

Mine's the Uniross 3V model. Roughly twice as powerful as the 1.5V model, and it shows!.. I did have the 6V model, but naturally I had to trade it in on the day that I lost my virginity, in favor of the the 3V.
Overall I would say I was quite pleased, for the price especially. The spread is adequate, the beam is a beam, as shown below:

People underestimate the importance of a good expensive torch. I know one time I lost my world of warcraft instruction manual underneath my bed, and I had to wait until morning to find it, on account of a poor torch buying decision. That certainly wont happen to me again!..

That's pretty impressive benneh, I like the swirl effect it gives.

I'm sure i'd be able to see perfectly well while flying down unlit roads at 30mph in the pitch black with one of them monsters. gah I could have saved £££s :(.

Haha, the question is when does a modified maglight become another torch... :p

So essentially you have the battey case of a maglight and a whole new torch attached to it?:D

benneh, I used to have one like that, with a "waterproof" seal around it, not sure it would allow me to cycle off road at night though... :D

I have a 4D maglite. I bought it for walking the dog, and I often go places that are very quiet and a bit dodgy. The dog and I could handle most things, but I like having a weighty weapon at the same time.

Shame it is absolutely rubbish as a torch. I bought one from the supermarket for a fiver and it is far better.

Thinking of spunking £30-£50 on a good torch, what's the recommendation?

I have recently got the LED Lenser P7. However I have now read about it not being regulated so will just get dimmer and go flat. My brother said he would like p7 so rather than buy him another one I could give him mine and get a different one.

From what I can see the most popular other torches are the Fenix LD20 R4 and the Quark AA 2 Turbo.

Do either of these have the switch on the side rather than the end? Like P7 do you have to hold the button in on them for the turbo mode?

My Quark AA 2 Turbo is a great torch. If going fenix the Q4 would be the one for throw, R5 for flood.

Buttons are on the back, not side
