Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

I've managed to get the Quest comfortable at last. I wrapped a small fluffy microfibre cloth around the bottom rear part of the headstrap to create a cushion. This has allowed me to play for an hour without discomfort, and without the headband slipping. :D

I'll look at getting a better cushion made up with proper padding and velcro attachments.

Audio issue with the integrated right speaker is a bit annoying, but at least Oculus are aware, even if there's no fix as of yet.
Perhaps it was introduced in the new update people are getting over the last couple days, as there wasn't a peep about it on any of the pre release reviews.
Intermittent, but regular enough to become annoying if not using earphones.

Other than that, looks a nice little device. Simple, easy and quick to use for little sessions. Loving the no wires, spec-limitations not withstanding.

I ordered a car baby seat strap cushion which attaches using velcro, which seems to be the right size for the bottom rear strap, as well as a headphone headband cushion pad that can go on the top strap. I'll let you know how I get on with these.

RaMarcus did a very handy video for this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5L3qAdCcOw
You could try the Quest strap linked above. Someone has managed to frankenmod a DAS onto theirs, shown on reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/bryp9y/frankenquest/
Some people have also velcroed a battery pack onto the back of the strap as a counterweight, so you'll get extra playtime and better comfort apparently.

Thanks for the video link. I've had a play around with the overhead strap loosening it as far as it will go so I've managed to get it under the back of my head now. This has helped but the headset is still a ways off from being balanced/comfortable. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine if I get a softer cloth/velour fabric insert and maybe try that overhead strap though.

However, I'm definitely keeping the headset as I think it can be made comfortable, and I really love the freedom of being able to take it anywhere.

That's kind of where I am with it just now. It could be more comfortable but other than that it's absolutely everything I want in a VR headset. Wireless, 6DOF, decent tracking, excellent controllers, the total convenience of playing anywhere. Other than the comfort it's perfect and I'm sure I can fix the comfort issue without spending too much more.

I'm definitely keeping it though.....and this is from someone who returned the Oculus Go 2 days after buying it! In fact it's so good I'm planning on selling my Windows Mixed Reality headset as I don't see me ever using it again.

PortaPro headphones attached, sounds infinitely better than the cack built-in.

Will buy some thin two core and solder a new, shorter cable on to make it nice and neat :)

That looks ace, how did u get the porta pros off the band? I'm not sure whether to buy/use porta pros or KSC75s..

Is everyone noticing btw god rays? Obviously we're gonna get them cos the black level on this is insane but if i cocentrate my eyes in the middle, i can see a clear circular god ray in the middle in high contrast scenes which moves.

Well after being very impressed by the Rift S visuals, I'm somewhat disappointed in the Quest in comparison. Did not expect the level of SDE to be that bad in comparison.

I appreciate they are different beasts doing slightly different things, but the drop in visuals along with the heavy front end and I feel it may have to go back. I also have the go and even that screen is sharper for watching media content especially.

Yeah, I had the same issue with the lenses on the Oculus Go only the improved OLED contrast seems to make it more noticeable!

Good to see Pavlov getting converted as I'd like to see a more tactical shooter for the Quest.

Interesting to hear that as I thought the SDE was pretty similar to the Oculus Go from what I recall though it was about a year ago I tried the Go.

I'll keep an eye out to see if anywhere near me has a Rift S on demo as I'd really like to try it out myself to compare.

I've spent ages reading as many reviews as I can find, and youtube videos.....pretty much everyone is saying the weight and comfort is the biggest negative.
Not sure I really want to spent £500 to be honest. My click and collect is available until 8pm tonight.

One of the things I thought went in the quests favour was lack of SDE?

Mmmmmm

It's funny, I haven't found the weight or comfort (bar one caveat) much of a factor at all, but this as always comes down to the individual. There's been plenty of times people report no comfort issues with headphones (for example), yet when I try them, I find them awkward etc. Just different variety of head shapes, so there'll never be a clear consensus unless there's an outright flaw in design, which doesn't appear to be a complaint that can be levelled at the Quest.
The head strap might cause some to have a problem and perhaps a halo-type would be more accommodating, but personally, I find it fine, but I see how it could be an issue as it's vital to get the curved support under the bump of the skull as this is key to properly supporting the weight off the front of the head.
Overall I find it more comfortable to put on than the Vive, but the most important fact is that I think it's going to be a '30min device', quick and easy to take on and off, which means extended use is probably going to be unlikely.

Caveat I mentioned above is that I'm not sure it's perfect for eyeglass wearers. Yes, they provide a spacer, but there's just too small a margin with the type of glasses I wear to risk possible lens damage. Dedicated lenses might be the way to go, but that's always usually been the case long term with VR IMO.

Regarding the SDE...it's not bad, but the jump in resolution probably might suggest that people expect it to be better etc. Plus the fact that we're more or less 3 years down the line now with proper consumer VR might be clouding things, and that we think it should be much improved, but we are talking about a standalone device with some understandable limitations, so that has to be taken into account. FWIW, I think it probably shades the Vive in this regard, but I'd have to compare with same titles.
It's part of the reason, I gave the current round of PC solutions a miss, and holding off to see how the Cosmos measures up, rather than go with a Vive Pro or new Rift, as there's just not enough general improvement to be seen. At least the Quest has something to offer given it's standalone nature, so it's a curiousity in that regard.

The Quest's SDE is way less pronounced than the Rift, but Go (and presumably the Rift S) is better still. You can see why headset manufacturers are going for LCD now, due to the RGB stripe layout giving a much sharper image for the same pixel resolution (thus a big improvement in quality with no performance penalty), and having no mura issues.

I will say though that the contrast and colour vibrancy of the Quest is massively better than the Go.

Working fine with glasses here (54mm diagonal lenses). Although I will probably get some WidmoVR lenses like I have with my Rift as the glasses spacer does reduce FOV slightly, although it's not as bad as the Oculus Go which also lets in a huge amount of daylight around the nose, so that's a plus point in the Quests favour as well.

EDIT:- WidmoVR lenses are now available so I've ordered some - will report back how well they work when they arrive.

Let me know what they're like as I fancy getting a pair for my Quest! Like you say it improves the convenience and field of view. Feedback would definitely be appreciated as I've never tried any lenses in my headsets.

I alsot it might help with the comfort since the glasses spacer pushes the front of the headset further away from the head which likely means more relative weight as you move around.

I got a pair of Diono Soft Wraps Car Seat Strap Covers today.

One of these fits very neatly onto the rear strap of the Quest and makes it way, way more comfortable for me, and more secure.

As you get two you can also use one for the top head strap if you want. You can get grey and black, but For some reason I got sent one of each, but I found the grey one to be softer and more comfortable.

Edit: Turns out I had the grey one inside out, so it looks like they're reversible. I find the grey side more comfy.

Only costs £5.95.

Amazing how much difference a small bit of padding can make.

Just done a 30 min back to back play test on Beat Sabre between the Quest and the Rift (CV1) and I actually think the Quest version is better. The improved resolution on the Quest is really noticeable when swapping back and forth.
