Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

So far I've bought Robo Recall and Beat Saber. Robo Recall is a fantastic shooter and really has a level of graphical fidelity and AAA gloss I didn't think we'd see on a mobile headset. Would recommend it. Likewise Beat Saber is pretty much a must own as well. Such a simple concept but seriously addictive!

Thinking I might get ultrawings as I had it on PSVR and really enjoyed it but the move controllers weren't too to the job of tracking flight stick moments so I think it'll be much better on Quest(it's only a tenner as well). I fancy getting Vader immortal as everyone seems to reckon it's a must play. Was going to buy superhot but I also had that on PSVR. Not sure if it's worth double dipping but definitely a must buy game if you haven't tried it before.

In the free games I tried rec room which is good though unfortunately lacking quite a few in my favourite game modes(rec royale) at the moment. Hopefully they'll add it in future. Performance was also a bit choppy. I fired up VRChat to see what the hype is about and it's cool but got very weird and a bit sinister rather quickly. It's certainly an experience though :D

So what games is everyone else playing? Any recommendations?
Pokerstars is free and good but as you experienced in VRChat can be full of wackadoodles.

Can certainly say Vader is worth a pop, especially for any Star Wars fans, but it is relatively short and more 'experience' than anything, but sure, that's how its sold.
SuperHot is probably the highlight for me personally, and the one I've spent most time on. Went through it on PC, but hadn't played the VR version up till now, so its great stuff for me personally. Ultrawings is the other one to get most playtime - don't know what it was like on PSVR control-wise, but seems OK on the Quest controls, though I find you need to be properly positioned in a seating posture so as to not have the tracking control all over the place - good little game though, but I'd imagine the PSVR version may be on par in an immersion/technical sense.
Beat Saber, Robo Recall and Space Pirate speak for themselves. How much they are worth picking up again is up to individual who wants them available on the go.
One title I probably will pick up is the Exorcist game, as I never bothered with it on other platforms, and heard decent things about it. If the Quest version is up to spec, I might have a look during the week.

I've only bought Vader Immortal out of the new Quest games, and it's well worth the money, even though it's short. I've got a few others cross-buy already such as Robo Recall, Space Pirate Trainer and Apex Construct. All these are worth getting. Robo Recall, once you get past the graphics downgrade is just as fun as on Rift.

I'd like to get Beat Saber and Superhot but the price is putting me off given I've already got them on Rift, and there's no cross-buy with those. Sports Scramble and Journey of the Gods look interesting though, but Journey of the Gods is only about 6-8 hours long apparently.

Also, last night I tried watching a full-length 3D movie on the Quest, and it did look great, but the SDE and fringing due to pentile subpixels was putting me off. I went back to my Go to watch it and it was a huge improvement despite the colours and contrast being worse. Also the Go was far lighter so was much more comfortable for sitting back and watching, so I guess I'll be keeping my Go as a media player and for a few casual games.

Of course if I didn't have a Go then the Quest would have been pretty good. I can really see now why LCD is becoming the panel of choice for VR.

I’m not really a gamer, bought this out of playing with a work mates, hoping beat Saber everyday will help me get fitter

Star Wars is great and tempted to buy I expect you to die which looks good , wish they bit cheaper but loving it

I expect you to die is great but if you dont try and do all the achievements in the missions it's under 3 hours. Great game but way to short at the min.

If you want another game which is fun and good exercise I'd recommend superhot. In addition to being an amazing game the game forces you to move and dodge slowly (as time only moves when you do!) So this makes for a kind of yoga style workout where you're stretching and balancing in various positions!

Thanks for all the game suggestions everyone :D

Also, it's worth being in mind that the Oculus store has a refund policy where you can return any game and get your money back if you you haven't played it for more than 2 hours or owned it for more than 14 days. Refunds can be carried out from the purchase history in the phone application.

So you're safe to buy a game and if you don't like it for any reason you can return it! Good if you're on the fence about buying a game and want to demo it first!

I expect you to die is great but if you dont try and do all the achievements in the missions it's under 3 hours.

That's the biggest issue with so many VR games right now. I don't like to put a "per hour" price on entertainment, since it's very subjective, but it does feel like poor value paying £20+ for something which only has a couple of hours content and very little replayability.

Looks like ALVR works a lot better than VRidge and it's free.

Can anyone give me advice on a device which can help strengthen my signal to use ALVR?

My desktop is connected via wifi to my modem.

Is there a device I can use to "repeat" the wifi signal of my BT homehub, and then just put that modem in my room and connect it to my PC locally, then connect my quest to that modem rather than the BT one?

if that makes sense?

As a test I attached a 10050 mAh battery pack to the cushion I put on the headset with cable ties, and the counterweight solves almost all the remaining comfort issues, so these problems are entirely due to the front-heavy weight of the headset.

I've ordered a more compact USB C battery pack which should kill two birds with one stone - counterbalance the front-heavy weight and also allow charging while wearing. I may keep the cushion on the headstrap as it does feel more comfortable, and gives a quick way to detach the whole battery pack if it's attached to the cushion. I'll be using velcro ties to attach the battery pack which should be more elegant and easier to adjust/remove than cable ties.

I like how you have attached kindling to that firebomb strapped to the back of your head :p

What headphones are you guys using with ur quests?
Not decided yet. Have done a Koss PortaPro mod (pic a few posts back). Last night tried a old pair of sennheiser cx300's and had them dangling down like I used to on my Vive.

Think I'm going to stick with the cx300 until a better mod is available on thingiverse as the current one I am using doesn't press the pads firmly against my ears. More 'friction' with this though.

Can you not make a hotspot from the PC itself if it has WiFi.

I have tried my Sony CH700Ns and they're just not that loud enough for films.
I've tried my August EP650s (cheap 30 something headphones) and they're much better volume wise.

I'm thinking of buying the Sony MDR-1AM2 headphones and using against the short 3.5mm wire. I've read and saw these are 16ohm AND they are the lightest pair of high end headphones I can find so they tick nearly every box.

I am tempted to wait for a mod involving the Koss porta pros but at the same time, I do kinda like the idea of full on headphones for the ultimate immersion now. I feel like its making the best out of a bad situation.

The volume is really low in the quest anyway. Don't know if it's some legal thing like with mobiles, but could live with the on screen warning when you go past a certain threshold.

Have you tried any in-ear?

Not a fan of in-ears.

Don't think so as my August's worked fine. I wish I could settle on a pair of headphones. I think the Sony's might be what I'll opt for. Was trying to find a more open pair of headphones but can't seem to which are low impedence, have a detachable cable and will stay on my head. I think Fidelio X2s/AKGs are too big in design and not portable at all.
