Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

Just done a 30 min back to back play test on Beat Sabre between the Quest and the Rift (CV1) and I actually think the Quest version is better. The improved resolution on the Quest is really noticeable when swapping back and forth.
Better:confused:. Missing effects no mod support. I'd say it's still inferior.

I got a pair of Diono Soft Wraps Car Seat Strap Covers today.

One of these fits very neatly onto the rear strap of the Quest and makes it way, way more comfortable for me, and more secure.

As you get two you can also use one for the top head strap if you want. You can get grey and black, but For some reason I got sent one of each, but I found the grey one to be softer and more comfortable.

Edit: Turns out I had the grey one inside out, so it looks like they're reversible. I find the grey side more comfy.

Only costs £5.95.

Amazing how much difference a small bit of padding can make.

Where from? Got pics?

I was specifically looking for the effects - other than slightly different "sparks" and the red walls having less shimmer there doesn't seem much difference and none that affect gameplay. But the increased resolution more than makes up for the 'downgraded' (a word I use loosely) effects. On the Rift there's also an occasional hitch as well that the Quest doesn't suffer from (tested on desktop PC and laptop with 8770k + 1070).

The mod support is a good shout though but it's something I don't use on the PC, seems to much of a hassle to set up.

Oh, and got the official carry case today - it's a good piece of kit - I can recommend it.

I love this case. Pricey, but so compact that it makes it so easy to take the headset anywhere, and you still have room for extra kit like a small battery pack.
This case is marginally smaller than the Go case I bought which stores a gamepad and accessories, and the shape makes it easier to put into a backpack.

+1

Would like to see how it looks. Given the limitations of the Quest's head-strap design I can see "Franken-Quests" becoming a common sight as people adapt theirs! :D

I've also realised you might be able to use these to attach a 'lipstick' style battery pack to the back of the headset. There looks like there could be enough slack in the fit to do it. Maybe not a big one, but certainly one of the smaller ones.

Quest headstrap cushion mod:

The pad is exactly the right size to fit over the bottom strap. It's too long to fit over the other two straps of the triangle. Also you can't fit a 5000 mAh anker battery inside, but I bet the 3350 mAh would fit.

I'm impressed with what they have achieved, but can't help thinking rather than the snapdragon 835 being good, the geforce 1070s et al just aren't being put to good enough use.

When the quest is this good, pcvr should be better.....I mean much, much better.

Maybe the limitations of the lenses are hiding some of it.....but I can't wait to see a quest 2 with maybe LCD screens and an sd855.

This could be big if they get it right. They need something like a wii sports killer game!

Just installed ALVR and managed to play Dick Wilde 2 from SteamVR, didn't notice any lag. The only problem had to change the floor level is SteamVR's advanced settings.

I'll be interested to see how well Elite Dangerous and IL2 play and look via ALVR. However I didn't have much success getting this working with my Oculus Go, even though when I was was right next to the router. Virtual Desktop worked great though.

Yup. Massive performance loss in PCVR for the hardware its utilising. The Quest has proven that 10 fold.

What's 3d movies like on this? I'm interested in the cinema feature mostly. Also, best cinema app in your experience?

Very impressive. I have various SBS 1080p 3D movies and they look great on the Quest. Vibrant colours, excellent contrast and blacks, and the 3D effect is amazing. The only downside is there is slightly more SDE than the Oculus Go due to the pentile subpixel layout, and they look slightly less sharp. On the whole they look better than the Go and hugely better than the Rift. One caveat is the playback does seem jittery on occasion. I'm not sure if this is due to the 24fps frame rate, or if there's a wider playback issue.

I use Skybox with locally copied files. It has the best playback options and the best viewing environments and positions for me. Big screen is great for social meetups though, but playback can be laggy depending on who is streaming and from where.

be honest, is it better watching a 2hr movie on the quest vs say a 55" 4k hdr tv? when taking everything into account, sde, comfort etc etc

I would never recommend watching a 2D movie on any of the current VR headsets as the resolution is still too low. They're certainly not a viable alternative to a large 4K television IMO so you're likely to be disappointed if you buy any current gen VR headset expecting it to replace a television.

3D movies on the other hand do generally look as good on the Quest as any other VR headset I've tried and are much better viewed on a VR headset versus a TV screen.

3D Films definitely on the Quest. Its amazing.

I prefer watching stuff on my 65'' TV with my 5.1 surround sound but I think I'd prefer watching a film on my quest than my ipad for example.

If my TV was smaller, I think I'd prefer the Quest. I'm a sucker for a big screen.

It is a little difficult to take a 50" HDTV with you on holiday, or a business trip though. And of course there's the times your wife or kids are hogging the TV so you can't watch it.

So Quest & Go are a really nice way to watch 3D movies on a huge screen anywhere.

So far I've bought Robo Recall and Beat Saber. Robo Recall is a fantastic shooter and really has a level of graphical fidelity and AAA gloss I didn't think we'd see on a mobile headset. Would recommend it. Likewise Beat Saber is pretty much a must own as well. Such a simple concept but seriously addictive!

Thinking I might get ultrawings as I had it on PSVR and really enjoyed it but the move controllers weren't too to the job of tracking flight stick moments so I think it'll be much better on Quest(it's only a tenner as well). I fancy getting Vader immortal as everyone seems to reckon it's a must play. Was going to buy superhot but I also had that on PSVR. Not sure if it's worth double dipping but definitely a must buy game if you haven't tried it before.

In the free games I tried rec room which is good though unfortunately lacking quite a few in my favourite game modes(rec royale) at the moment. Hopefully they'll add it in future. Performance was also a bit choppy. I fired up VRChat to see what the hype is about and it's cool but got very weird and a bit sinister rather quickly. It's certainly an experience though :D

So what games is everyone else playing? Any recommendations?
