Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

Just received my lenses from VROptician and they are perfect.

I ordered them on the 22nd of April and they arrived today, so about a week to deliver. They came in a glasses case with each lens in an individual microfibre drawstring bag. Also included was 2 lens wipes, a microfibre cloth and also a bag of Haribo which was nice. I paid exactly £65 for my lenses.

Fitting the lenses was simple, no tools required. Just pop off the black rings around the quest lenses and place the VROptician lenses on top. They are held in place by friction and seem quite secure. Using the lenses, they are perfect. Crystal clear with no distortion. I have been using the quest using my glasses up until now and the VROptician lenses make the Quest much comfier and easier to put on than wearing glasses.

Highly recommended.

Now I just need my GOQuestVR Halo strap to arrive. I placed an order for that at the same time as these lenses and they haven't even been dispatched from China yet...

Thanks for this report, have just ordered lenses based on this. Have you kept the glasses spacer in, or removed it ?

So far I'm managing to not use glasses. do find during a game the headset needs to be adjusted abit, but that could be me being blind. Although I did try it.with glasses and found it harder to get the focus right.

Not tried it whilst wearing contacts yet

Anyone been trying the resolution improvements over link yet, via the oculus debug tool settings?

Im interested to know how much it improves sharpness or affects framerate.

Ive been playing assetto corsa today and definitely need more framerate and quality. I can just about get 70fps if i drop the antialiasing right down but notice the difference with distance sharpness. This is over virtual desktop. The close up clarity is great, for example if i look at my car interior, but i need more sharpness on the track for seeing upcoming corners better. Feels like im driving without my contacts in at times but squinting doesnt help lol.

If i whack the antialiasing and other quality settings up the sharpness does improve but i drop to about 50fps which is noticeably jerky.

Edit: just had a proper test of what steam Vr's supersampling setting does to my framerate. On auto, for me its selecting 72% as the default setting I think. All these on run on the same assetto corsa settings, 4x AA and some other options on medium to high.

20% - 72 fps - visually terrible, very low resolution.
40% - 72 fps - again visually obvious that its a lower res.
72% (default) - 70 fps - smooth framerate just would like more sharpness.
100% - 62 fps - I think I can detect a small improvement in sharpness especially close up, but can also see the jerkyness in the framerate. Obviously it gets worse from here on.
150% - 50 fps - Is sharper close up, not too much detectable at distance. Jerky though.
200% - 41 fps - Sharper close up but can't see much difference at distance. More jerky.
300% - 30 fps - Again sharper close up (dashboard text clearer to read). Very jerky. Noticeable black spots at edges of screen when I turn my head.
500% - 24 fps.

I think the sweet spot could be around the 150 to 200% mark but I need to get a GPU which can give me the full 72 fps at those settings.

I also tried the 8x AA experimental mode and I lose about 8 fps from whatever setting I try it on. Couldn't notice any difference visually I don't think.

Can also confirm that the pixels per display setting in assetto corsa content manager doesn't appear to do anything when connected wirelessly. Perhaps it will when I get my cable next week, when I'll see whether steam VR's settings produce any more noticeable change and also the oculus debug tool settings.

What link speeds are people getting through the USB cable? I have bought an Anker cable and I'm getting 1.8 Gbps reported by the Oculus link setup page. For a 5 Gbps theoretical maximum, I'm quite disappointed with that. I tried all the ports and it made no difference. I know there will be losses but to get less than 50% of rated speed is not good.

First impressions are that the visual quality is the same with link as in virtual desktop but the frames are smoother.

If you do a search or read back a few pages you will find other people got the same speed.

It might be all the decoder/encoder can handle at the moment. Is the official 'link' cable any different?

Has anyone installed OTT, noticed it has a 'link' tab now with profiles for different PC setups (sorry if already mentioned).

I am going to give this a try:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/gdrc1q/v21_quest_rift_s_adapter/

I am trying to get the 3D print file from the creator to see if I can get it printed cheaper than Shapeways as they are wanting just shy of £40 for the print. I've got the Rift S headband ready to go and a dremel on standby.

If this all goes to plan this could end up being the ultimate Quest set up for comfort. It is a little on the pricey side coming in at £100 all in after buying all the parts and getting the 3d print but it should be better quality than the GOQuest VR (which I am trying to cancel but getting no reply from the seller). Not to mention getting it a lot quicker than the Go Quest.

I will update you on my progress.

Did anyone buy space pirate trainer? I played the demo and thought it seemed decent so bought the game but its not very good. I thought there would be more to it than standing on the spacepad shooting things but that's all it is. And it seems impossible to dodge the incoming lasers.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty good fun? Dodging isn't that hard IMO?

Use the shield to deflect lasers in one hand, and a gun in the other!

There's actually a lot of strategy in the game. Another thing you can do is switch to a laser whip which you can use to grab enemies and bash them around, or charge automated weapons on the pad behind you.

The key to winning is to have enough room to move and dodge around enemy fire.

Hmm maybe i haven't given it enough chance but im playing in a fairly small playspace and its making me feel a bit sick too. I expected the guns to really ramp up in terms of power, fire rate, damage etc (think project X from retro times) but aside from the occasional 30 second upgrade the standard blaster is pretty rubbish.

You do know you can switch weapons using the thumbsticks? There are a bunch of different weapons, including lasers, grenades, shotguns, etc. Just move the thumsticks off centre to show a weapon wheel. You can use different weapons in each hand, or a shield/laser whip.

I think it's a great game, played it for ages. You can dodge the enemy fire. But, it really involves moving around a lot. It should be possible even in a small area, you just need to draw their fire then move.

You know you have a shield as well? It can help you get out of tricky spots. Also, try to not shoot the upgrades until you need them.

Work on your aim too, getting eye shots makes the enemy die faster.

The standard blaster is my favourite weapon.
