Oculus Quest (Santa Cruz)

Is there any magic settings I need to be using in either the VD app on my desktop, or on the Quest side of things.

It's worth downloading a wifi app for your phone to find a 5ghz channel that's not congested and set your router to that. Other than that the connection reliability really does seem to be up to how good your router is.

I can get a good wifi signal down in my living room, but get lagging and disconnects. The connection is rock solid in the room with the router, but there I don't have the room to make proper use out of the freedom that comes from using wireless. :(

Yeah you need to think about getting a 5ghz WIFI Access point to supply rooms you have problems with but have the space. I'm fortunate as the router is downstairs and the best place for me is actually the kitchen believe it or not which is next door to the router. The conservatory would be ideal but a) I hate it and b) there is no heating but I put a access point in there to cover the garage and outside (although I need a better one). There is simply no better feeling than doing VR outside in a massive space. You just look a bit of a divvy if anyone sees you! :)

Yep using the games tab/library. I'll unplug the Index and see what it does.
Did the trick, it booted the Quest straight in to my SteamVR library. Seemed a little stunted, laggy when playing Beat Saber though, either 2 feet from the router, or over in the other room through two walls.

Have a look at my settings a page back. Also on the streamer the auto optimisation one some have it off some on, having it off can improve performance. Also sideload the Android settings app to the Quest that way you can get into the Android Settings and check your Wifi connection speed.

I know! Some months ago I tried out the Quest in an empty floor in the building where I work. I could max out the playspace, and it was absolutely incredible.

I played Vader Immortal Ep1 by walking through all the bits you can walk through, played Apex Construct by walking through the levels, broke Robo Recall by walking around rather than teleporting (It doesn't update your location properly if you walk), and played Tea For God which is absolutely mindblowing (if a bit janky) in a huge space.

Unfortunately a jobsworth in the office kicked me out of the floor for "elf 'n' safety" reasons (I wasn't really supposed to be in there to be honest) so I've lost the use of that big area. :(

I'm considering (when lockdown is over) renting out a church hall or sports hall to do it again.

Cheers, I shall dig up the optimizations, and experiment with the network. The signal shows good, and it's running on 5gz, so hopefully tweaking sorts it.

What is everyone using as a facial insert ? I bought a cheap gel insert off the Rainforest which is easy to wipe and clean but I just wondered if there was something better and more comfortable ?

I've tried a few different ones but I'm now using the kiwi design one, it's quite expensive but it's vented and you get 2 pads with it. I have found this to be the most comfortable one I've tried. Definitely don't get the amvr one though its awful

Yeah the AMVR gets very mixed reviews, I was just looking at the Kiwi one and it says is compatible with the Oculus glasses spacer.

Perhaps it's just your odd-shaped face :p Sod all wrong with it. Do you work for Kiwi Design?

I have the kiwi, better than stock, and does indeed work fine with the stock glasses spacer. Shame I couldn't get on with their knuckle grips.

I have read some reviews and watched some Youtube videos last night and on the whole the AMVR does get mixed reviews. Whereas the Kiwi one on the whole gets good reviews. I considered the VR Cover one as I have their strap padding but they generally get bad reviews for being too thick/padded. I've even seen a review where they bought the same gel insert I have got, then bought the AMVR and wish they had not bothered. Just dont know whether I want to spend another £32 on the KIWI. It only seems to be on sale in one place, apart from the bay where its a ridiculous price.

edit: in fact Kiwi one now £35.99 its gone up in price!

I use the AMVR cover, and find it comfortable enough. I am disappointed that it reduces the FOV though, but you can mitigate this a bit by careful placement of the cushion. I generally use this for exercise as it's easy to wipe down.

I also have a silicone cover for the standard interface, but while this is great for normal content I find that for vigorous exercise it slips around too much if it gets sweaty.

Thats why I`m wondering whether not to bother. The glasses spacer already reduces FOV and if the extra padded interfaces also does the same its a weigh up between better comfort over a decent FOV.

Just received my lenses from VROptician and they are perfect.

I ordered them on the 22nd of April and they arrived today, so about a week to deliver. They came in a glasses case with each lens in an individual microfibre drawstring bag. Also included was 2 lens wipes, a microfibre cloth and also a bag of Haribo which was nice. I paid exactly £65 for my lenses.

Fitting the lenses was simple, no tools required. Just pop off the black rings around the quest lenses and place the VROptician lenses on top. They are held in place by friction and seem quite secure. Using the lenses, they are perfect. Crystal clear with no distortion. I have been using the quest using my glasses up until now and the VROptician lenses make the Quest much comfier and easier to put on than wearing glasses.

Highly recommended.

Now I just need my GOQuestVR Halo strap to arrive. I placed an order for that at the same time as these lenses and they haven't even been dispatched from China yet...

I couldnt order them anyway just before the virus hit I was due to have an eye test and it got cancelled. I need some new glasses.

Just had a look at VROptician dont quite understand why it says "Your far distance prescription (and not your reading or PC prescription)" as I use my PC Prescription for the Quest. Its an intermediate set with a reading distance of about 1m. Far distance is no good for me with the Quest.

(I have bifocals reading/far for normal and intermediates for computer and Quest.)

Quest focus distance is around 1.5m. I've got presbyopia and have varifocals, VDU glasses and distance glasses. I use my distance prescription for VR lenses and it works great.

You will probably be waiting for a while, it took over 4 weeks to get mine!

On another note, I recently had to return my Quest due to a faulty fan and got the replacement just over a week a go.

Well guess what arrived today, another Quest!

I should really send it straight back but I'll hold on to it for a while just in case they don't realize their mistake but I've never had much luck with things like this so I'm expecting an email at some point soon asking for it to be returned.

Just gonna say, the Kiwi interface is slimmer than stock, so actually has better FOV when used with or without the glasses spacer.
