Oculus Rift

I'm pretty out of touch with the relative capabilities of of hardware. What's the likelihood of an i7-920 @3.6ghz and a stock 770gtx powering this, or am I looking at a full system upgrade? Also pretty sure my mobo predates usb 3.0

I'm almost tempted to skip it and wait for the next generation. I've got the DK2 and the Samsung Gear VR - and I just don't think the resolution is quite gonna be there in the consumer versions to spend hours and hours in one.

Anyone think playing Valkyrie with just the xbone controller will be good enough or should i invest in another type of controlling system? people mentioned HOTAS setups.. Do you think it'll make my life easier? (I'm mainly looking at Valkyrie at the moment although you never know i will probably expand my games for this!

If you do recommend HOTAS for Valkyrie, which should i go for?

Or for something considerably cheaper, the HOTAS-X

Almost zero chance at all, Oculus themselves state a minimum requirement for a 970 GPU

That's where I'm sitting at the moment, sold the DK2. Tried a Vive recently and the resolution from the DK2 isn't the leap forward I hoped it would be, I assume the CV1 won't be any better.

I'm also on a crossfire setup at the moment which I'm going to replace when the next gen GPUs appear this year before I get another VR unit.

Nothing there is probably up to spec unfortunately, and you will need USB 3.0.

It'll make you poop your pants the first time the Alien finds you hiding in a cupboard

Tbh there's not really anything to 'VR' coding...the SDK handles everything, it's like 10-15 lines of C++ to implement in a barebones OpenGL app...it's mostly about gameplay design and implementation.

Yeah, and I've done all of that (DK1). :)

I want to get into VR gaming, that means finding a company that is serious about VR games, and hiring. I guess not necessarily as a 'VR programmer' (kinda of a niche).

VR does need some special TLC when it comes to coding games. Impacts game design as well. That is, if you want to do it properly.

As for the Rift, the resolution isn't much improved, but the SDE is. It'll still be a blurry mess for distant objects, just less pixelated.

I would have Liked the option to buy it without the Xbox1 controller. I'm sure that will bump up the price and tbh I don't need it...already have various controllers so why it's mandatory included I don't know. Does it have something VR specific? I've never used it.

I agree with this. I have a 360 controller that does what I need, so no need for the bundled controller and would have preferred a bit of a saving on that. Not overly fussed about it but the option would have been better.

I was almost certainly going to get this but then saw the vive and just not sure which to go for, with it being such a new technology just can't bring myself to pre-order until I get to read some decent reviews.

The technology in the Vive looks good, but I'm a little concerned that really it's make or break for HTC. It has to do well, and with the Rift coming out first plus the backing of Facebook money, in the long-run I can see Oculus being the leading brand.

Potentially a VHS/Betamax scenario again.

Wasn't there a rumour that the Vive was delayed specifically for a 'hardware breakthrough' or something?

Plus I'm not sure I'd bet against the Steam/Valve backing for the Vive...

Personally the game I play the most (iRacing) is *still* using a DX9/10 engine, the update to DX11 isn't until March at the earliest, plus needing a general pc upgrade (6950 aint gonna cut it :p) means I can leave it until later on and probably till after the Vive release is out and proper comparisons between the two.

I completely disagree. I think they will both be successful and if either wins for the gaming community it will be the vive. Rift will never die with the backing of Facebook, but if need be it will carve out a niche for casual users.
