Oculus Rift

My monitor cost over £700, my GPU cost over £800, I put things into perspective when buying and feel the £500 tag is a good result really. If you have a machine that is capable, you only need the Rift money but things do start getting pricey if you need a new CPU/GPU.

Also I can confirm that playing with much alcohol is bad news and playing with much hangover is bad news :D

Yeah, I had to exempt the 4th group of people who dont take sides, as that sort of maturity is so rare :D

I think maybe that level of maturity comes with age though. I've had a bit of a laugh reading comments on Facebook on PCGamer articles regarding the Rift, and everything just descends into bitching about the price with comments like "I was totally going to get this, but when I saw it at $599, no way, so **** Oculus, I'm going to go with Valve and get the Vive" which generally translates as "I can't afford this so I'll bitch about it" by someone who's still in college. Unfortunately as mentioned, it's bleeding edge consumer technology, it's going to be expensive, and I would much prefer to own a higher quality product that costs more, than imply being able to own an inferior product that was cheap.

It's like big screen TV's, I'd much prefer to save and spend more money on a higher quality panel than I would going Tesco on Black Friday and picking up a 60" Tesco Value TV just for the sake of owning a big TV. At the moment I think that's what some people want from VR, but unfortunately there is no real Tesco value option out at the moment, except maybe Google Googles.

After ordered this I thought id give Samsung Gear VR a go to fill in the gap. Bought EVE Gunjack and even on a phone it looks incredible. it's a basic game but I've never felt so immersed as the opening cut scene in any game before.

Well I caved and went for the pre-order, have to wait till June now though seeing as it took me so long make the decision.

I'll probably get the Vive as well, and am looking to get a new GFX card from the next AMD/Nvidia line going to be a very expensive year, better start creating myself more over time then.

Did I see something stating that Oculus Rift now won't work with Steam VR mode now? Because they have their own platform?

I mean, I know HTC Vive with Steam is a competing device, but are we saying these won't work with the biggest/best PC gaming platform that 95% of gamers use?

I'm sure someone will hack away around it etc but its too early to know what SteamVR is and what compatibility it has. It is probably soley designed around the HTC Vive at the moment while they create the APIs then it will be up to Oculus to implement it into their driver.

But Oculus has their own VR platform so it probably isn't very high on their priority list. I'm sure all the SteamVR games will work with the Oculus (unless they use Vive exclusive features) but may not be usable through the streamlined VR UI. A bit like how the DK2 works now, a bit of faffing around before loading the exe rather than having a fancy UI you can use within the headset itself.

Elite Dangerous shows as Steam VR, and when I borrowed a mates Oculus DK2, steam had created a VR UI which allowed you to view steam using the DK2 headset.

Now it sounds like that might be excluded for Oculus devices?

I pre-ordered as soon as it was available, managed to get an April shipment period.

I'm not entirely sure why people are shocked about the price, all indications (apart from some miss managed PR) pointed towards them prioritizing quality over cost and while £500 was the top end of what i expected, it certainly isn't unreasonable to me. Consider what we spent on screens, expensive gaming peripherals like steering wheels etc.. With the technology involved, the market being completely new it does feel like they're offering it at a competitive price point.

I personally - can't wait.. For somebody who has only had a 2 minute go on an Oculus Rift dev kit (v1), i'm buying it purely on what i believe it'll give me rather than experience. I kind of want to be stunned and blown away for the first time when it comes.

Pros and cons comparison.

Oculus has better picture quality but a more restricted FOV.
Vive has the better VR experience and more polished software.

Valve are working with a view towards supporting an OpenVR platform so that developers can easily create games which work on the various VR headsets. They would be going completely against this to actively prevent Oculus from working.

The more likely (and worrying) situation is that Oculus tie games exclusively into their proprietary platform preventing them from working with other VR headsets.

With their own desktop client, so those of us that feel like Steam, Uplay, Origin and BattleNet are just not quite enough will be satisfied :(

I'm trying to have some faith that all the big VR players should recognise that if they want to gain any significant traction in terms of uptake from users and developers then heavy exclusivity is something to be avoided (and which easily can be for the most part)...

On a side note... daydreamed stupid VR game concept #1:

You and a friend, both sporting VR headsets - are 2 kids doing the classic cartoon trick of standing on shoulders inside a large overcoat so as to pretend you are actually an adult...

The kid on the top can see what is going on around you, and is in control of the arms... the kid on the bottom is in control of the legs, but they can only see the inside of the coat, a small area of the floor beneath them and a very restricted view through a tiny opening in the coat buttons...

I guess the missions in game would consist of various contrived "adults only" scenarios... buying booze, going to a nightclub, etc. You'd have to communicate pretty well to ensure the lower kid doesn't walk you into any hazards...

I dunno  Probably flawed... 3/10

So my USB 3.0 ports on the Asus Rampage IV Formula are not up to scratch.

They recommend this card

Inateck PCI-E to USB 3.0 2-Port PCI Express Card and 15-Pin Power Connector, Mini PCI-E USB 3.0 Hub Controller Adapter, with Internal USB 3.0 20-PIN Connector - Expand Another Two USB 3.0 Ports

from the rainforest.

Problem is its ugly and has cables. There is a non cabled version, but I wonder if that would work?

This is truly disappointing. First the price, and now my mobo, that isn't really that old has rubbish USB 3.0 ports (ASMedia) - apparently.

Also they point you to a 2 port version, when actually you'll need three once the touch controller comes out!

I have a front USB 3 - 4 port hub on my case with my RIVF but will grab a 4 port PCI hub to keep everything tiday at the back of the computer. Any will do the trick and I will go for something with 4 ports.

What's the solution to trailing cables? Have them mounted up a mast/boom thing so they hang down? Like the hoses at some DIY car washes

yeah I'm not getting a new mobo for a while after my last upgrade lol buying pci-e usb 3.0 seems the right thing to do. at least then I can upgrade the port should I ever need to.
