Oculus Rift

To be clear my system failed the test on cpu which is a watercooled i7 that will 100% work fine on the rift.

Is it an older i7? What I've seen mentioned so far is that they are utilising some of the new instructions on the more recent processors so the checker tool is just showing any CPU that doesn't have those instructions available as incompatible. Whether it'll have a big impact or not on performance, presumably a powerful i7 will be fine without those specific instructions, but who knows.

I'm ready to cave and grab a £300ish 2nd hand dk2:o. I really want a vr headset for flight sim type games and was going to wait for cv1 and the new graphics chips from amd/nvidia. I've been patiently waiting for ages but they still seem an eternity away.

I've already decided £300 for a dk2 would be worth it especially if I resell for £100+ in 6 months time. But am I asking for trouble by going for a 2nd hand one via auction site?

IMO the experience of a DK2 isn't miles away from the Vive, if you can get one cheap it'll certainly give you the full VR experience at a fraction of the cost. I expect residuals on the DK2 will hold up reaonably well even when the CV1 is out provided they don't do anything stupid like freeze out hold headsets through the SDK.

Interesting. Saw your review on Amazon.

It all works fine. Or appears to. Just this event appeared in the log on first boot with it plugged in. Can you check your event log?

Other than USB pen drive what other good tests are there?

Nothing in my event log and I put a 1.5GB file across to a USB 3 memory stick and it was really quick. Nothing technical for data but it just works.

Hmm all the ports work. My g27 wheel works too.

Guess it'll be alright..I wonder if the migration issue is power related. I got the powered one..and.with no power the ports don't work.

Yer, if it all works, don't worry. A bit strange though as we share the same Mobo but see what is what really innit :)

Over 2.0 mobo USB copying a 1GB file runs at 28MB/s over 3.0 mobo it runs as 40MB/s. Over the PCI card it runs at 42MB/s

Yer, those are good speeds and all looks ok from your testing. Most mobo's use the Asmedia ports, which I would still expect to work fine but as I am already chocked out on mine with Headphones and controllers, KB, mouse, flight stick, 3D emitter etc, I needed the extra's.

I really wouldn't bother. Theres no way I'd want to spend much time on a flightsim in a DK2. Resolution simply isn't good enough, and they aren't particularly comfortable to wear for a sustained amount of time either.

I'd definitely recommend waiting for the consumer version.

Hmm, the trouble is I've already convinced myself I have to try it, I've just seen too many people enjoying it in space and flight sims!
The only thing holding me back is the concern I might end up with one that's pretty worn out since I can't find anything about general reliability (maybe a good thing?). I'll probably go for one that specifies being bought from oculus in the 2nd half 2015.

Sounds a little like crazy talk to pick up a dev kit. They are apparently also not transferable from a support perspective...not a waste, but you have to ask why?

Yeah theres plenty of games already beta supported that people don't know about, and even more that can be modded to use OR.

I gave skyrim a try in DK2 and while its nails to play using it, the visuals are ****ing brilliant. Those massive high mountains actually look massive when you're craning your neck so see the summit!

:D I did the same when I first put mine on. Not with Skyrim but just in general. The whole 'bigness'

DiscoveringSpace was a jaw dropping moment when I flew past earth. My only Rift only purchase as I loved it that much

Real pity you dont have MM access otherwise I'd post up a thread on there.

I haven't bothered yet because I didn't think anyone would be interested in a DK2.

Couldn't tell you about burn-out, but I haven't had any issues with mine whatosever so far, albeit its prob only been used for about 15 hours

Well if you've got enough expendable income by all means go for it, but personally I'd recommend waiting for the consumer version. I know the preorder list is pretty long, but I'd be surprised if some don't make it to retail stores in April

Getting a DK2 is not a bad idea. For one the hardware requirements are massively lower than the CV1.
Secondly, although the resolution is lower, unless you're trying to read some small font, the actual experience will outway the resolution drop.
Plus you can try it now rather than waiting 4-5 months AND you'll more than likely be able to sell it on later for the exact reasons above.

Just got The Vanishing of Ethan Carter redux, rolled back to version 1 which means the VR works out of the box. It's such a pretty game and my current favourite thing to do in VR :)

Agree mostly. I think when the immersion is veryyy good then resolution isnt a big headache. Its not a dealbreaker i mean. However....

I'm playing ETS2 atm in the DK2 and the immersion is huge...much more than i felt in Elite. The resolution is ok and its just about acceptable as you can read the menus and then dashboard instruments as well :) ( i wish i knew how to get sweetfx working for ets2 in the dk2 though!)

The biggest killer of it to me is the fact i look like ive been on the lash for a week after coming out of a session with the dk2. It is rather heavy..i get massive bags under my eyes. It just is not comfortable for long periods.

From what i've heard the CV1 is waay more comfortable and lighter to wear so thats a home run for me :)

You've really been playing virtual pub simulator haven't you !

first things first, 300? i sold my dk2 for 150 and i only paid 350 for it new. You crazy to consider spending any more than 200 on one. They are great but as many have said, after the initial "fun" (and its great) things like screen door and sometimes finicky tracking starts to bug you.

I loved my dk2 but i wouldnt wanna play anything extended in it. Was worth it for the demos and some VR porn tho!!

Bought for £350 and sold for £150, you must be crazy! I paid just over £300 (£256 + about the deposit) used it for 2 months, then sold it for £390.

But yes, after the initial fun and testing it was just a good test gadget. The real problem for me was the weight and how warm it got on your face. I hear this is sorted in CV1 along with the things like resolution and not being able to read text and light coming into the mask through the giant nose hole
