Oculus Rift

Well mate, I just played about 10 minutes of Roborecall without lifting my arms from my lap. Serious wrist strain haha.

I wasn't able to do some of the things like grab robots, but I could grab some of the bullets and throw them back. Not sure how it would work with some of the levels where you have to catch rockets!! But it was playable :) You have to keep teleporting like bugs bunny on speed, just bouncing from place to place to get an angle for your shot.

So I don't know how scientific my testing was!! And I am presuming you can move your head to look around. If you can move your body from side to side a little if could help with the dodges. It's way more difficult to play but still very enjoyable.

Haha, thanks so much melmac.

It sounds potentially do-able. Thankyou for doing the experiment haha, its much appreciated. Even if I can experience a bit of it, thats cool. The more I look at the OR, the more stuff I seem to find that seems suitable.

Controller stuff will be the bread and butter, but thats cool to know some options potentially exist with the touch controllers.

So I've got my rift (had to order elsewhere :( as OCUK don't accept bitcoin anymore :( ) and it is pretty nuts. The T rex demo where it roars nearly made wet myself!

BUT...its considerably more pixelated than expected. Its still amazing, and ive literally just run through the 1st demo, but is there a way to lessen the pixelation? Supersampling? Im guessing not as this is 1st gen, but it did suprise me a little. Probably something you notice way less in game. I particularly notice it at the 'home' setting.

Thanks guys!

Download the Oculus SDK and extract the debug tool executable from the tools directory and try some SS, I tend to run 1.6 for most things.

This is how I enable it, start oculus home, launch debug tool and set 1.6, make sure to hit enter, close debug tool then oculus home, relaunch home and then debug tool to confirm the setting has stuck and then launch a title. There is a 3rd party tray tool that improves this process but I have not tried it.

Did you get a CV1 or DK model?

Thanks SupraWez. I shall do that.

I just got the normal consumer model. Whatever that is.

Im trying to setup the touch controllers, they work ok twisting and button wise but it doesnt sense im on my bed so for example when you have to reach for the floppy disk in the touch demo, I cant put it in the computer because the bed is in the way!

When I set it up It wanted me to do it standing-couldn't see an option for sitting so this is probably why. Any ideas? How/can you set it up sitting (touch controllers-normal xbox is fine).

Also in Farlands I dont seem to be able to walk about using the xbox controller-just teleport. Presume thats normal (but slightly disappointing). Im hoping many games will let me 'walk' using the xbox controller (just like in fps's).

The teleport is popular because people don't get sick from it. Minecraft lets you walk about in game.

Another option to try is VorpX, I normally wouldn't recommend it at all, but, if you want mainly walking games then Vorpx converts normal games into VR, games like Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto etc. Personally I don't like the results but some people are very happy with it.

There is an update coming to Oculus in the next couple of days. I think there is going to be an option to configure it for sitting down positions.

Glad your getting on with it, as above the teleport is used to make the game more comfortable for wider audience. For FPS style maybe try Dead Halls, its a horror title, I dont get it one with it at all due to the movement.

Did you get the SS working?

Elite Dangerous should play well on the xbox controller, but much better with a proper HOTAS.

Hi melmac,

Thanks for this info. So just to confirm there is no way to calibrate sitting down atm?

Hi SupraWez,

Having just played Robinson, I can confirm that made me feel extremely sick/bad! That was moving with the controller only so maybe not the best option.

Having said that I just dloaded Robo Recall-wow! I can see what the fuss is about. Teleport works well but I cant reach down for my holsters because of the bed being in the way. I can kind of aim ok with it tho for short periods, better than I thought but my scores are rubbish haha.

Just dloading Arkham as its meant to be great as an experience...

Also SS working? Sorry im being slow...

Kinoblemeister, I am not sure about what way it works at the moment, but, in the release notes for version 1.15 they specifically mention setting up for sitting position, standing position and roomscale. So hopefully there will be improvements for tracking for those that are sitting only.

When I tested robo recall yesterday I had trouble reaching down for my holsters too. I am not sure what range of movement you have, but what worked for me was keeping my elbows back and putting a narrow pillow on my lap. All I had do was twist my hands down the side of the pillow and could grab the guns that way.

Don't worry too much about SS at the moment. You can come back to that when you are comfortable in VR.

If you finding walking in VR is making you sick, do a little bit everyday. Don't try to push through it, play the game until you just start feeling a bit queasy then stop for a few hours. Eventually you will get your VR legs.

Thanks melmac. Makes a lot of sense. Thats good to hear the support is coming. I tried kneeling on bed to set height and that has helped-can reach holsters just about but I can't play much anyway as is pretty intense. Amazing though.

SS = SuperSampling using the debug tool ;)

Yes robo recall is very good, when you get Batman installed be sure to setup for your NVidia, under settings there are tweaked options if your running an NVidia card ;)

Ah yea ofcourse. I havn't got round to messing with SS yet. I have a 1080 and a 1700x, wondering what kind of SS the 1080 can give me in most games?

I would jump in at 1.6 and see how you get on, if you notice a performance drop then back it off, to be honest the latest Oculus software has other neat tricks to keep the motion smooth so even if you are dropping some frames you shouldnt notice but will benefit from the increase in quality.

Give it a try and see what you think.

I'd take 60Hz version with 4K support if they offered one with full positional tracking.

The panels are already available, 60hz to 90hz made bugger all difference to me.

Just thought of a game for you to try, it's a walking game using the xbox controller. Chronos. Gets great reviews!!
