Oculus Rift

Just realised that I spent £400 on a Rift bundle from OCUK and no bags of Haribo.Last week I bought a USB3 lead/faceplate thingy and got 2 packs!
Got a good mind to return it:mad::mad::mad:
LOL j/k:D:D:D

Just set up for the first time.

I'm having a lot of fun! Had a great time with the little robot! Talking to him like a right nutter. No motion sickness as yet, everything is feels very natural. Downloading robo recall and Google earth. Can see myself spending the weekend in VR.

So much still to try so going straight back in. If you don't hear from me before Monday can someone come get me out.

Quite envious of all the new Rift users at the moment, the first time you try out VR it really is a magical experience! Saying that I've owned my Rift since October last year and my enthusiasm hasn't worn off yet :)

Don't miss the Dreamdeck demo. It should be installed by default, and was the original first time demo before the Touch controllers were released. It's quite odd, but I've seen a few posts on r/oculus recently from people who have had their Rift for ages and didn't even notice it was there.

Surely it's wiser not to rush through it as there isn't much content out there? Or am I mistaken and there is now quite a lot?

Lots of content out there. If you like Driving games/flight simulators or Elite Dangerous, then you will never run out of things to do. I bought mine in June last year to play Elite Dangerous. It's now August 2017 and I have only played about 1 hour of Elite because I spend so much time playing other VR games.

If you only want to play single player games than yes, Content might be a little limited, but once you start playing multiplayer games like Rec Room, Echo Arena, Star Trek, Dead and Buried, Onward , Pavlov, going to stop there the list goes on and on!!! There is loads of content.

And that doesn't include things like Quill, Medium and other art programs, or experiences like the Lab, the Blu, Big Screen Beta, ISS mission.

I think a lot of sites that say there is no content out there are talking about specific game types and AAA standard games.

Watching 3d movies is nice too, I've watched Gravity on Rift and it was awesome. Originally intended only to see how it looked and ended up watching the whole film :)

I do like driving games but I also get motion sickness (even from non-VR FPS games). I've only tried VR properly on the PS4 and it didn't trigger motion sickness... until I played a racing game! I lasted about 15 seconds, one spin and a hill/dip in the road and I could feel something brewing!

I keep meaning to drop back into Elite. I've never bothered getting any of the engineer upgrades, and the last time I had a quick go on it, the NPCs seemed way tougher than back when I regularly played.

I have to admit I haven't played Elite Dangerous properly since when the game officially launched even though I have of course tried it in VR as soon as I got my headset. Don't get me wrong the VR is great, nothing like actually being in the cockpit of the spaceship but I just found the whole gameplay experience rather boring after a while.
Flying from station to station which all (at the time) looked exactly the same inside, especially the underground docking area just to look at a 2D list of commodities, mission profiles etc when you go there, rinse and repeat. I know there have been a lot of updates since but I still don't think the core gameplay has really been expanded upon that much. I'm pretty sure my opinion is one of a minority for ED but I haven't seen anything that has made be want to dive back in which is a shame.

I entirely get what you mean. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with it. The mission boards are utterly pointless and boring, and aren't worth bothering with if you want to make money (unless it's changed since I last played it). There is a bit of variety with the stations now (I've not even visited one of the asteroid ones for example, I've only seen the screenshots).

However, bounty hunting in a RES is an amazing experience in VR. Sure, it gets repetitive after a while, but I kept finding myself drawn back to it time after time. Dog-fighting in an asteroid field in VR is simply awesome :)

There's loads more that I want to experience and some stuff that I will be returning to.

Best experience so far.... Robo Recall.... Now that is a game that blew me away and I've only down the first part... twice.

Going to keep playing the first level bit as not only is it immersive but a great way to improve my aiming withthe controllers

Having had the headset on for much of the day it's so comfortable, I've had zero sickness too.

Did the Dreamdeck demo first, problem was I've watched so many people do the demo on youtube that the surprise level wasn't quite there. Still enjoyable though.

Watching videos of people playing Robo recall and then playing it yourself is a completely different ball game though. Now that is what I'd call a game changer.

So impressed with this game. VR is here to stay and the future is going to be mind blowing

I'm sorry if this has been covered already but at 50 pages long....

If I purchase one of these, can I use a HDMI Splitter or DP-HDMI converter?

Some have said that there are issues with USB ports? My case has some on four on top but I'm unsure if they're 2.0 or 3.0

I take it there are sensors that I need to place? My PC room isn't that big, would they be OK on each side of my monitor? I don't intend to walk around, only play sitting down. Thanks.

Np :)

HDMI splitter - not sure, but considering you'll probably need a good one if you were to try it (you're throwing a very hires stream at 90fps through that cable).

DP-HDMI cable has been reported as working several times, though it might be worth researching what make/brand people have used just in case.

BTW, if you've a free DVI port, try to dig out an old DVI-HDMI converter that they always used to include with graphics cards and use that - tried it on mine with two old ones I had knocking around, and it works great.

You can use USB only (I think Melmac has done and reported zero tracking difference). The technical difference is that on USB 3, the PC is sent the raw image from the cameras. With USB 2, it's jpg compressed before being sent, so could technically be less accurate at a distance.

The thing to be careful about is not plugging the Rift and both sensors into a single controller (your USB ports on the front might all share the same controller internally for example). The best advice is to use a maximum of 2 Rift devices per USB controller.

If you're going for a generally seated (and maybe standing facing forward only) setup, then a sensor at each side of your monitor is pretty much the Oculus recommended setup (plus it's quick and easy). However, even if seated/front facing only, if you can wall mount them higher up and pointing down, you'll get much better coverage, but on your desk is fine for seated. Do try some things standing though - if you're meant to be standing in game, then actually standing in real life is what they call a presence multiplier, as you're more closely matching what your virtual avatar is doing.

Hope that helps.

Oh just a quick note about the VR covers: the red frames don't entirely block the light, so if it's a really bright sunny day and the sun is shining in onto you, you get this red glow around the display. It's not a big deal, and it can be sorted by just closing your curtains (artificial lighting doesn't do it btw), but I thought I'd mention it for those debating whether to go red or black

Finally got my rift set up. I've only completed the tutorial with the robot thing and my mind is blown...I wasn't expecting it to be this good :D:D

^Yeah, that blew me away, along with the beginning of Robo Recall when you're standing next to them in the city.
Got mine yesterday and it's been a blast, even if I can only take about 20mins at a time before I get a slight headache so far. Hope that gets better in time.

Superhot VR is bloody good. Having played a lot of the 2d version, jumping into the 3d world and actually being the shooter/puncher is incredible.
