Still not mod?

My election campaign hasn't even officially started yet. I have just been stoking the embers of the grassroots movement, hearing the support of the toppest of top tier posters and launching examples of revolutionary ideas such as this Off Topic thread, whose main detractors have since apologised and voiced their support and gratitude for it.

I will be accepting CV's for volunteer positions in the campaign at a future date, if anyone thinks they have skills that could be lent to the campaign and want to see a true top tier poster who understands the Motors section, and forum in general, then volunteering your support is certainly something to think about.

I think its indicative of the current leadership that I am not already a mod despite the unrelenting popular support before I have even started seriously attempting to become a moderator

Actually NVM he's after a manual.

Wish him luck. They are like hens teeth :).

Seriously, he's better off buying a well looked after auto and then getting it converted. I don't think there is a single manual Soarer in this country that doesn't spend a large amount of time bouncing off of the limiter sideways, and when they come up for sale they aren't cheap. A manual one regardless of condition is £3k+ all month long. If it doesn't sell here it'll be exported to Europe quick smart. I think its actually cheaper to get Jap metal from the UK rather than importing it directly from Japan due to the exchange rate!

Anyway. When you can get a decentish base car to work with for about a grand, manual bits for around 1500 and I've been quoted £400 labour from a reputable specialist for the swap, so you've got to ask yourself if it is worth holding out for a factory manual or already converted car when you can make your own without touching a spanner for a similar amount of money?

My plan was always to stick a manual box in mine, track it for a bit and then decide if I wanted to go any further or not knowing if I decided against keeping it I'd make my money back on the conversion. Unfortunately the realities of living on my own made the 'manual box' fund into the 'keep your head above water' fund. Oh well, plenty of time for another. It'll sit next to my Jag :).

Nah, I think the Jag is much better value for money. The Jag is a E60 rival all week long, at the core that E38 is nearly a ten year older car!

Please tell me you are not talking about the S-Type?

Please tell me you are not commenting on a thread without reading it?

Sod it, I'll save you the hassle. We're talking about the X350 XJ8.

It's a 15 page thread and I couldnt see the relevent post on the last page, so I sought clarification from you before continuing further.

Though I must say your answer has suprised me. I'm not sure how the XJ is considered an E60 rival, it is surely underselling such a car - it's an E65 rival?

Joshy, just a couple more comments on your ad.

Give it a decent clean top to bottom.
Pick a decent location to take photos.
Take out that cable that is hanging next to the handbrake.
Get some pics of the rear seats and the instrument cluster.

In the text ditch the bit about unknown springs. If you don't know what brand they are don't mention them. Also the bit t the end about time wasting comes across as unecessarily aggressive. I'd really suggest toning it down.
I'd also remove the word 'only' from your line about oild and filter changes.
Mention the engine size and any worthwhile performance stats.

Sorry if this seems overcritical, but they are things that as a buyer would put me off.

I meant E65. I'm only human :).

I'd probably do something stupid though and buy an S8.

I do like that.

Can't wait for the current V10 ones to get to that sort of money. Going by that one, I've only got another 6/7 years to wait :p

It was clean .

Pick a decent location to take photos.

What? My council estate isn't good enough for you?

Take out that cable that is hanging next to the handbrake.

But that's for the state of the art MP3 to Cassette converter! Its a vital feature that completes the car!

Also the bit t the end about time wasting comes across as unecessarily aggressive. I'd really suggest toning it down.

Now you're saying that I'm aggressive!?!

I'd also remove the word 'only' from your line about oild and filter changes.

Only 3 complete services in a year. What a nasty, thoughtless person that I am .

Sorry if this seems overcritical, but they are things that as a buyer would put me off.

If you were a buyer you'd be exactly the type of person the bottom sentance about time wasters was designed to deter!

:p

Nah, seriously it is much appreciated. I'm going to nuke the ad and redo it. I wrote it when I was in a foul mood and it shows a bit. Going to book a day with the dent man, do whatever bodywork touches I can do myself, return the wheels back to sliver and see what happens. Thanks :)

That's me, yeah :).

Step 1) get a nice brand new set of matching plates. £20

Step 2) Get somebody to polish it, or pay somebody to detail it. £400

Step 3) Take some better photos of it. Ideally borrow somebodys SLR and find somebody to post process the photos. Free

Step 4) amend the advert, remove the references to poor quality paint and "it can look good when polished" Get it polished so the paintwork looks as good as possible. Also remove the mention to the "unknown" shocks and the list of parts its needed replacing. Free

Step 5) Get a dent repair bloke in to sort the worst of the dents. £few hundred.

That's my advice.

Yes you don't want your advert to be dishonest, but equally you don't want to put everything in it. Keep some of it back to avoid putting people off.

Can you just clarify, are you honestly suggesting he spends almost £600 on detailing and dent removal to sell a 20 year old 1400 quid Toyota?

Seriously?

You want him to spend nearly 50% of his asking price on prep?
