Offical PSP2 (or rather NGP) Thread

I think the price was a big factor in the PSP vs DS battle at the beginning, if Sony can get the price at or below the price of the 3DS i think they will do much better. They then just need to make sure they have a constant stream of decent games once they have got the ball rolling

Well the 3DS is £200. If the PSP2 is £350 then it's way too much to compete imo.

I expect as the 3DS SRP seems to be about £230 then i reckon this will be £275. The IP4 costs about $180 to produce so ive read and that sells £400+? Sony will make a loss on the console at first but make it back on the software unlike nintendo who are making profit from the 3DS. As i said earlier this thing sounds like it will also get apps aswell as games, so its more directly competing with iOS and with the PSsuite also helping android in the only dept they lack in there market place, decent gaming. This could be a big win for Sony, google and any other droid manufacturer in the future if things are done correctly.

WOW  DS vs PSP again, I'm having flash backs to 2004, tell how did that work out :p

The psp2 (I refuse to call it that stupid name) still has a lot of hurdles to over come, namely the price, software and trying to convince to publisher to to do quick ports of ps3 stuff.

That’s what hurt the psp the most, that it was nearly as powerful as a ps2 and the games just didn’t work 100%

This is my fear with the psp2 that you will get games quickly ported over that don’t run well.

^ Yeah, why are people comparing it to the PSP/DS era? (This'll be my first console since 1998... so I have no idea :))
Isn't the NGP a portable internet tablet that offers web browsing on par with your home PC + gaming power close to a PS3?

Good interview with Jack Tretton here.
PS Suite will have non-gaming apps.
Definitely a tightly controlled version of Android 2.3 :p

Looks sony want to take on everyone.

Does it have a mic? If it does, could probably use it as a phone whith some sort of homebrew app. I can use my iPod touch as a phone using a mifi device. lol

^ Yeah, why are people comparing it to the PSP/DS era?

Because it's practically the same.

Nintendo release console with a new edge in the form of touch screen at a low price.

Sony release a much higher specced console at a higher price.

If the PSP2 has this much horsepower, then its also a good indication that PS4 will have cutting edge technology and be a significant upgrade from PS3.

I brought a PSP when it came out but for some reason just couldn't get on with them like I did with consoles and PCs.

New info,

Looks like the NGP is going to have a new proprietary memory card for storage and also Jack Trenton apparently said that the NGP will not have any internal storage :-(, but you can save your games progress on the game carts themselves at least.

Yeah seems like all DLC and save games will be stored on the game card, and new prop memory card for download games. I wonder if this will use the same slot and be the same type as the game cart? This may be to combat piracy/ homebrew on the system. Perhaps you can only use 1 at a time, eg play game from memory stick or play retail game from card?
edit it will also keep the price down for the NPS if it doesnt have large internal storage like the PSP go.

Yes, but it will force people to shell out money for a memorycard themselves and that will be more expensive compared to Sony buying a million memorychips as putting them in the machine.

Ideally I would have liked 32GB internal storage, a Memorystick slot and a game cart slot.

I don't like the sound of this new Flash card the games will come on. Why do you have to save your games and DLC to the cart and not to the consoles inbuilt memory or an expansion card?
What happens if you want to sell the game, or lend it? Are the saves tied to the PSN account somehow or do you have to wipe them 1st? What happens if a publisher/developer allows 400MB for DLC and gamesaves and decides to release more DLC, at a later date? Is this to stifle 2nd hand games in some way or stop piracy?

Because it's practically the same.

The major differences I see this time (whether they affect sales, I dunno):

1) The PSP will probably have a longer battery life than 3DS, whereas it was the polar opposite, by a fair amount, last time.
2) Many health concerns, scaremongering about 3D (good old 2D screens never hurt anyone).
3) PSP has Capacative touch screens, that everyone seems to be getting used to on Phones, but Nintendo are sticking with a stylus and Resistive screen. I think capacative is a lot easier to use when moving (i.e. trains etc).

But either way the price will be the killer hook. A £200 plasticky console with titles aimed at kids will always sell more, as a present, than a £300 "fragile" console with huge screen aimed more at adults.

If you can write stuff to the new media being used on the NGP, they best make this console unhackable.

I haven't been able to watch any videos ect how does this touch screen thing on the back work?
