Offical PSP2 (or rather NGP) Thread

It seriously seems awesome. My PSP was a day 1 Japanese Import from Lik Sang and it's still going strong. It's a shame they shut down, would be fun to import again. I can imagine a worldwide release, or very close to one, for the PSP2 though.

a nice look at the NGP next to a Go

I really like the look of this device, hopefully the price wont be too bad (hoping for £250-300). On one hand the tech looks sweet, on the other it all depends on the games available.

Having never had a x000 PSP i have no UMD games so everything i can play on my Go i can play on this. Just have to hope a few more big games are released on the PSN that aren't already there.

Any confirmation that it is running Android?

I can 100% confirm it will not be running Android :)

I think people are just basing this on the fact the Playstation Suite is Android compatible and will work on NGP. I can see the benefit of Google getting (paying?) Sony to get PS Suite on their OS, I can't see the benefit of having Android on the NGP which, at heart, will be a games console. Plus the connection/battery icons in the top of the NGP interface do look a bit like android, but that is just coincidence imo.

I might cancel my 3DS pre-order... I didn't see Sony pulling something like this out of the bag.

Don't cancel it, just maybe delay it, if you feel strongly? The 1st update for 3DS is not due till May (i think this adds a lot of features that the console is advertised with). Additionally there are very few launch games iirc, they are all "Launch Window" games, which means they come out between March and E3 or something like that. By E3 you will probably have more info about both machines, only problem may be if retailers get greedy, post 3DS launch and bump up the price from the £202ish now to more.

I think it might be worth waiting until later in the year when there are more games available. I'm not sure when E3 is, June or something?

My two cents...

  • Sony and Google spent a lot of time/effort adding gaming features for Android 2.3, if fact game dev/support was the main show stopper of 2.3 and it's why the Playstation suite requires it. (Sony are part of the OHA which drive/develop Android)
  • The NGP is just a 5" tablet/phone with a controller, you'll see identical spec tablets by the time it arrives.
  • That Dungeon defenders/citadel demo suspiciously looks like Androids new and unoptimized Unreal 3 port :D
  • Having all these PS1 games/apps for the Playstation suite across 3 platforms (NGP, PS3, Android) makes no sense, esp when Android and NGP have identical hardware.

Not putting a downer on the NPG as I'm as excited as the next gamer about this amazing machine but graphics similar to those shown so far are already available on the iPhone 4.

Just saying :)

I wouldn't. As we've seen with the recent events concerning the PS3 homebrew stuff that isn't just what it brings. It also brings piracy and more importantly to me as a gamer it brings hackers who totally butt **** the entire online experience.

I see that you're unaware of the PSP "homebrew" scene.

Not really no, you may seem some games with stationary back drops that look a bit like this but not how its done with fully rendered backgrounds better animation and improved textures. For example the latest spec leaks for a possible iphone5 are dual core versions of the cpu/gpu in this, but in the NGP they are quad core with dedicated GPU memory. John Carmack has already stated that when phones get to the same hardware level as the NGP they will still be a generation behind due to the differences in the APIs.
