Offical PSP2 (or rather NGP) Thread

I really think Nintendo are going to be left behind in the next gen war, my feeling is people are allot more clued up...

I'm willing to bet most peoples smart phones look graphicly better than a 3DS!

Kind of contradictory I think. If you've seen shots of the 3DS games then you'll realise it's not just a Nintendo DS with tacked on 3D effects. It's a whole new line of hardware so to say people are more clued up when you yourself are not is a bit meh.

I really think Nintendo are going to be left behind in the next gen war, my feeling is people are allot more clued up and won't accept Nintendo's gimmicks and lower specks like they did before. Times have changed we now live in a world of HD smart phones and games like COD are king. I'm willing to bet most peoples smart phones look graphicly better than a 3DS!

You really think Nintendo are going to be left behind after the amount of DS's and Wii's sold?

even when thy brought the DSi XL out that sold far better than expected. Nintendo is a houshold name now really.

What percentage of the mobile phone market has an HD smart phone?

I'll give you a clue, it's low.

Well excited by this, I will get both the 3DS and this NGP.

Will be interesting to see what happens at E3, can't wait.

The PSP uses proprietary hardware while the PSP2 is essentially a supped up 5" Android* tablet.

They won't allow full market access but hopefully there'll be a 'Sony Approved' app store (so I can chuck powerAMP/xScope/Flash on it :D)

*The notification bar looks suspiciously like Android to me and it has access to Sony's Android playstation suite store. :)

I feel it's all down to the type of games that come out. I have owned both a DS and the original PSP, sold the DS in less than 6 months and still have the PSP. Purely down to the games available, the DS just didnt have anything that interested me and seems more target towards young kiddies and casual gamers where as the PSP seems more towards more active gamers.

As already stated though they really do have to be careful about the price, we normally get screwed in UK on prices with this kind of thing but if it's overly expensive it won't succeed no matter how good it is. Not too sure on what the 3DS pricing is going to be but it can't afford to be too much more as the majority of people buying a hand held console will probably just buy the cheapest.

Those were my opinions btw, Most of my mates and work colleagues have iPhones, Desires and Samsungs and i would class them all as HD screens. I didn't mean Nintendo would completely fail but just wouldn't be as popular.

K1LLSW1TCH - I'm not stupid of cause I know "it's not just a Nintendo DS with tacked on 3D effects" I'm 42 and have been gaming since Binatone, Tech, Computers and gadgets have always been my hobby and think i'm as clued up or maybe even more so than yourself.

What i meant about people being more clued up is. Many have bought the Wii thinking motion controllers and Wii fit boards were great only to spend most of the time in a cupboard unused and I see the 3D screen in the same way and think many others will too (a bit like 3D TV). Like i said earlier I'll take dual analogues over 3D as it opens up a whole world of proper portable FPS, something the 3DS does not!

I think the time gap between releases will allow for this :D.

I thought the PSP in general was way behind it's time, and wasn't really satisfied with it.

but I think with a touchscreen and a touchpad as well as 2 analogue nubs then it will have the potential for game developers to do good with the handheld.

I simply said "Times have changed we now live in a world of HD smart phones"

Meaning people have them, seen them or are aware of them.

the kind of people that are willing to lay down £200+ on portable gaming are more likely to have a decent smartphone imo.

You're making the mistake of using the Wii as a metric for the 3DS' success, and not the DS itself (which still sells like hotcakes to this day).

That's like saying oranges won't succeed because apples are having a hard time. A better analogy would be that Valencia oranges have been doing exceedingly well, and so it is totally expected that Trovita oranges are going to be popular too.

Exactly, Nintendo have proven to Sony over the past generation graphics and power isn't everything, even Apple have taken the same route.

I take my had off to Sony the NGP does look fantastic and it will be a purchase for but do we really need ports or cut down version of popular PS3 games??? Games many of us have played and completed less than 5 years ago. Some have already noted they rather not have a portable PS3 and just play them on the bigger screen.

At least with the 3DS, Nintendo are taking a new graphic direction, offering 3D without the use of glasses. Again Nintendo bringing something new to the market which no other company have done yet. As for the 3DS games, ok, they are again remakes of older games but at least with games such as the Zelda: Ocarina of Time it is graphically better and aimed at kids who were too young to play the original N64 version 13 years ago. I can see Sony becoming last again in the portable market against Nintendo and Apple too.

Thats a cool looking portable and good thread OP.

Dont think I'll be buying any portables though (my last was a gameboy pocket) but it does look nice and have a nice spec.

NGP vs. 3DS is pretty much EXACTLY like PSP vs. DS back when they came out.

A friend got a DS on day one, another friend got a PSP on import around the same time.

The DS looked kinda funny, was based around a "gimmick"* and was much cheaper than the PSP. The games also looked "okay" but nothing you wouldn't expect really.

The PSP looked amazing, was just a "standard" handheld, and was quite expensive. I remember playing the original Ridge Racer and quite frankly I was blown away by the graphics.

My point is even though the NGP on paper trounces the "gimmick" based 3DS, you never know what is going to happen. If you'd told me back then that the DS would go on to sell way, way more than the PSP I wouldn't have believed it for a second.

The power of the hardware doesn't make a difference. It's the games that are released and how much mass market appeal you can generate that does. The DS Lite and Wii have more than shown that.

Plus never underestimate what a hardware redesign, price drop and Pokemon/Brain Training can do ;)

*I would argue that even the touch sensitive back to the NGP is more of an additional control method instead of the primary buttons based approach. It doesn't "define" the console.

So long as the games dont force the touch screen/pad in my face I may have to buy this, dont really fancy any touch screen stuff, main reason ive never gone near a DS

I'm on Sony's side of the fence, but we all seem to be missing the great big white elephant in the room: this is exactly how PSP/DS turned out.

- Everyone proclaims that the PSP2 will beat 3DS just because of hardware grunt
- Massively powerful PSP
- Weak DS
- PSP2 is said to cost 300-400
- 3DS is said to be just 200
- The PSP2's target demographic and feature-set are exactly the same as the PSP
- The 3DS continues to expand on the existing demographic of the DS and aims to bring back 'core' gamers

Sony hasn't really learned any lessons. Beautiful piece of kit, but it's still the same demographic and it's still going to be a prohibitive price point.

My pessimistic view is that this is a disaster waiting to happen.
I think the price was a big factor in the PSP vs DS battle at the beginning, if Sony can get the price at or below the price of the 3DS i think they will do much better. They then just need to make sure they have a constant stream of decent games once they have got the ball rolling
