***Official 2010 F1 thread***

Last year he was unimpressive, not sure why, whether he lost motivation, or just didn't get on with the car, who knows.

But this year, especially the last 3 races, he's done well and seems much more like the driver who won the world championship (and was challenging regularly for wins before that).

I reckon he could work at McLaren, he's got the pace and I don't think Hamilton and him would go the same way as Alonso and Hamilton...

I agree, he's upped his game since Massa has gone and seems to be getting back some of his hunger which is great to see :)

As to driving at McLaren, can't really see it happening, but it wouldn't cause any rifts in the team like happened with Alonso, Kimi doesn't care who his teammate is - he just gets on with it. (so long as he's allowed a post race icecream ;))

Maybe Ferrari have told him he doesn't get an ice cream unless it's a podium finish?

I agree it's unlikely (Rosberg is probably the more likely, assuming they do get rid of Heikki) but would like it, didn't like his move to Ferrari as I like him as a driver but dislike Ferrari :p

Kimi would miss his italian icecream at McLaren :D

It would be good to see him back with teh Woking team, but not sure it would happen, it would / will be great to see Rosberg in a really decent car for once (but wish Williams could produce a decent one again also)

Renault surely are screwed...

They are claiming a meeting did take place but it was Nelson that came up with the plan. Regardless if he did which I highly doubt they are running the team, it's their job to tell him to STFU.

It seems they have cheated then, just a matter of clearing up who was in the meeting and booting out the culprits for good.

totally agree with Frank 3 car teams would be rubbish. i don't see how it would work. it would be such an unfair advantage and rubbish.

well if the fia have the tapes of him repeatedly asking which lap. Then they wow. Not sure what would happen.
As I said before I don't think past seasons should be dug up. But I can see the Renault getting a bigger punishment than McLaren.

They have to be excluded or banned for a very very long time. It doesn't matter that it was a season or 5 season ago.

Alonso is jumping ship with santander at the right time.

Hopefully this will be the last we see of Flab, the fine or exclusion that should come will be the end for renault in F1. Renault should then sue the backside of Flav for what he will have done to renaults reputation and loss of money.

A sickening way to play with a drivers career as well.

Selfishly I'm more worried about Bernie and Flavio's relationship for the sake of Queens Park Rangers! I sit near them so I'll be interested to see if they turn up for next weeks game (they are normally at every game that doesn't clash with F1) and if they sit together. I can imagine if the story has gone public enough for the fans there to know a lot about it then there will be a lot of insults hurled Flavio's way.

Thats why bernie was more worried about renault pulling out than F1 integrity when the story broke. More worried about protecting his buddy.

If that is true and its proven - I dont see why Symonds should be punished any less than Flav, and both of them should be banned from all FIA motorsports events for life

It doesnt say much for Piquet, but seeing how Flav does things I can appreciate additional unneccessary pressure he could have added to make Piquet's position impossible

If Piquet Jr's version of events is true, then I agree with you. He was fighting to stay in F1, Flav offered him a plan that would let him keep his drive, he panicked and took it. If, however, Piquet is telling porkies just to get back at a team who sacked him because he wasn't doing a good enough job.....yeesh :( Says something very uncomplimentary about him.

There's also the new version which has come out recently. The Pitpass take on the story that Pat Symonds and Flav were aware of a plan to cheat and it was all Piquet Jr's idea is here.

For their part, while Briatore and Symonds admit that a meeting did take place, they allege that it was Piquet Jnr who came up with the cunning plan
Now if that particular version is true, then it was a cunning plan on the level of a Baldrick cunning plan - as in, not quite as cunning as a fox who has been made Professor of Cunning at Oxford University....

... The Pitpass take on the story that Pat Symonds and Flav were aware of a plan to cheat and it was all Piquet Jr's idea ...
If Briatore and Symonds (the MD and the Director of Engineering at Renault F1 respectively) are actually admitting that they knew of the plan but claiming that it was all Nelson Piquet's idea then I really can't see how they can escape the most severe punishment.

As to Teflon Fernando, I do really find it a wee bit far-fetched that he is uninvolved in such fundamental strategic decisions as how much fuel he starts a race with - he must have had a pretty fair idea as to what was planned.

Totally agree about "IF"

but I personally cant see the logic of the plan coming from Piquet (yes its totally at the level of Baldrick etc) - and while Flav and Symonds dont have control , it would be immediate sacking after the race (with knowledge of the plan from the meeting) let alone hiring him again the next season

Also IF this was the case they / Renault ARE far more likely to get a lesser ban if they tell Bernie / Mad Max during the winter than if they try and sweep it under the carpet....I dunno Im not sure, but I cant believe Flav/Symonds are completely innocent even if the latter version is more accurate

edit yes I can appreciate the possibility of Piquet blackmail keeping him in the team etc etc, it just doesnt sit right as a possibility with me (but Im quite happy to admit Im wrong if thats the case)

Im not an Alonso fan - and he COULD have been involved, but he didnt NEED to be (Flav/ Symonds know what time would be an opportune lap to crash, to benefit Alonso the most - whatever strategy Alonso is on)

Cant explain it well but its like a mathmatical equation - you know the result you want, you know one part of the equation (how far Alonso can go before stopping) , you just keep on adjusting it slightly until they balance as it where

...Alonso ... COULD have been involved, but he didn't NEED to be ...
I suspect that there are VERY few F1 drivers who are simply told the planned strategy for a race, get in the car and follow that strategy without understanding the thinking behind it - Raikonnen may be a rare exception ;).

I would find it very surprising if someone as professional as Alonso didn't have extensive discussion about strategy with the team before a race. I suppose that there is a remote possibility that he and his engineer decided on a strategy and then Briatore, Symonds and Piquet hatched a plan built around that strategy to "gift" Alonso first place without making him aware of their plans but it is pretty far-fetched to be honest.

However, whatever happens is certain to be based only on what can be proven and Alonso may escape yet again.

Of course Fred escapes, he pulls in the crowds, why would he start so light at 15th on a track that as usual is very difficult to overtake on.

I remember he was very fast but unlucky in qualifying, a long first stint could have had the same outcome has PK crashing.

Exactly they run the team and the head of any organisation is responsible for the antics of their employees, as we saw with Dennis in the Macca 'scandal'.

The most idiotic form of defense to say it was Piquets idea.

It will be interesting to see how they squirm around this one to keep Renault and Flav safe.
