***Official 2010 F1 thread***

With the leaving of the three offenders, and the precarious position of global finances and renault's involvement in the sport, I can understand.

Well, we might as well throw the rulebook away then. Because the message currently being sent out is "Hey, don't worry if you get caught doing something you shouldn't. It's okay that you illegally obtained McLaren technical data. It's okay that you released a car from a pit stop with only three wheels fully attached, just days after a young driver was killed by an errant wheel elsewhere in the motor racing world. It's okay that you engaged in a spot of race fixing. Just don't get caught doing it again *wags finger*".

Remind me again what the "F" in "F1" stands for again guys? I used to think it meant Formula, but perhaps it means Farce....

At least Ferrari can't be blamed this time. Well, except by sunama, but his attempt was pretty weak by his usual high standards.

Yes I do.

Ron Dennis prided himself on his integrity to such a degree that I cannot imagine him sanctioning anything like that, nor would he want to win that way, by obtaining detailed technical info on a competitor and effectively cheating.

Had he known about it earlier, he'd have done something about it.

He must have been a terrible team principle then if he had no idea how pit strategy was being decided for races and what components were being tested in testing.

Anyone noticed that, if Bernie had had his way with the medals system this year, then if neither Barrichello nor Vettel win this weekend, Button would be champion?

In fact, Barrichello or Vettel would have to win all the remaining races to stand any chance of denying Button the championship.

How would that be better Bernie? Denying us a potentially superb final four races of the season and handing the title to Button simply because he has more wins?

Please never mention the M word again please, just in case Bernie comes here and reminds himself about it. Even as a Button fan, I'd rather see him win or get beaten in a big season finalé.

Vettel really has to win at least 3 out of four either way ;) ...and even then its probably a pretty long shot that Button wont at least get 13 points over the last few races (given also a supposed pretty big upgrade for Brawn and a reasonable / big upgrade for Red Bull )

Im not sure Fisi is capable of a win in the Ferrari without a lot of retirements (several points finisihes are quite probable though), and I cant see Kovi having a string of decent finishes either tbh, Kimi if he feels like winning, & Lewis may well be a slight step behind if the teams have decided to go full ahead with 2010 already , so for the wins its down to the Brawn's , the Red Bulls, Lewis and Kimi (depending on updates), and for the podium places

Personally hoping JB can get a couple more clear wins, but I know there are a lot of people here who would prefer that NOT to happen - each to their own lol

Edit - I was against medals in F1, and always will be , pretty certain it will come at some point and we will have to live with it but personally think the points system 10 - 6 - 4 -3 - 2 - 1 was best, no point for pole or fastest racing lap is how it should be

Im all for 3rd cars but ONLY if 3rd driver HAS to be a rookie (max 2 seasons on the grid as a rookie), and rookies dont get championship points of either kind. That would then allow all teams to have an experienced f1 driver as a replacement in case of injury, very little additional cost and allow for progress within the team without a huge jump required of little to no valuable testing straight into racing. Basically Patrick Head's idea voiced recently

\mini rant over lol

Cant see Vettel challenging now, will probably go through another two engines before the end of the season. I reckon it's a straight race between Button and Barichello.

Hehehe.

Sorry JRS, but that doesnt work.

Here's how I see it.

Renault did something bad in 2007 (possessing McLaren data). They got a suspended ban, which was about right. It was McLaren's punishment which was totally out of proportion (more on this later).

Renault then won a race in 2008, using illegal methods. (Note: they didn't fix the race as this would've involved deciding who was going to win the race, before the race had finished and probably paying off every driver/team on the grid...instead they just asked one driver to crash, which in turn favoured their other driver, which they profited from).

McLaren on the other hand, were involved in a very close battle with Ferrari in 2007. They needed to be stopped and the FIA offered them all the assistance they could. This meant that for a lesser crime, they received the harsher punishment, which was completely out of proportion to all punishments previously dished out by the FIA.

I can bet you that if Renault were competing against Ferrari, Renault would've been punished hard enough to prevent them from finishing ahead of Ferrari.

The FIA did not assist Renault. They merely gave them a punishment which was right from the crime.

The FIA are consistent, however, if Ferrari are somehow involved, they make their decisions to assist Ferrari in every way possible.

Today's decision was the right one and in line with previous decisions made by the FIA (bar those involving McLaren/Ferrari).

dream much?

Renault to postpone further F1 race fixing until 2012 season
Today at 08:00

Renault Formula One have agreed not to try and fix any races for two-years following an FIA hearing on their role in fixing last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The team were called before governing body the FIA to answer charges they had asked driver Nelson Piquet Jr to drive marginally worse than normal, to allow team-mate Fernando Alonso to win.

After the hearing Renault F1 President Bernard Rey told waiting reporters, “We are pleased to put this incident behind us, and we have given assurances that we will not try to fix any race until the 2012 season.”

“We recognise this will put as at a competitive disadvantage behind the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, but I suppose we did get caught, so it is only fair.”

Lightly

The FIA have been quick to respond to criticism that they let a major manufacturer get off lightly due to a potential revenue drop for Bernie Ecclestone should Renault have walked away from the sport.

“They have not got away lightly, far from it.,” said FIA President, Max Mosely.

“Being forced to compete fair and square in Formula One today is essentially a massive handicap.”

“Honest hard work gets you nowhere in this sport, it would be like running a football team full of Nicky Butts.”

“Unlike all the other teams, they will now be forced to rely on things like aerodynamic packages, genuine race strategies, and drivers who don’t crash all the time.”

“They will have a really hard time of it. Until 2012, of course, when they can go back to doing things the traditional Formula 1 way.”

I'm guessing it's still ok to crash into opponents to win championships and block the track during qualifying? Given that 95% of people with an interest in F1 would have welcomed Michael Schumacher back. The name that defines leniency in F1.

Perhaps it's better to argue the staff at Renault should have been punished properly in 1994 and 1995 when they cheated at Benetton.
Really can't be arsed to discuss this further, just accept that F1 is and always has been corrupt to the core. Meanwhile Piquet may never drive again and Schumacher made himself the richest driver in history, denying his opponents fair chances along the way.

Makes for some interested reading.
It sounds like it was initially Piquets idea that was put to Symonds and Briatore. They then went along with it.
Plus there is actually a whistler-blower who corroborated the intention to crash deliberately, but didn't know the plan was going ahead until the crash happened.

very interesting.

Symonds and Flav stitched up by all accounts. Symonds letter is very poignent.

Like how Frank Williams added his 2p as well.

Surprised they didn't blank out all the email addresses etc on the online publications.

I don't believe they have been stitched up at all. Indeed if NPJ put forward the idea first they could have just dismissed it out of hand and that would be the end of it - there is no way NPJ could have executed this plan by himself and certainly he wouldn't have derived any benefit from the plan if he had gone at it alone. Symonds has admitted his part and there is no way in hell he would have crashed a million pound car without the team principles agreement.

It's clear they all worked out the details of the plan together and executed it together - which actually makes the point over whose idea it was pretty moot.

Symonds letter is complete b/s if you ask me

Fine, he wanted (and maybe even needed) a win - and he undoubtedly has worked hard for the team. I fully accept that

What I dont accept is that it was a momentary decision - he had all night to think about it as the plan was actually devised Saturday by all accounts now.
This to me means he was cold and calculating in regards to possible harm to the NPJ, any spectators and other drivers in the race for hours on end

They may well be able to tell how their car reacts on a head on collision (and I find even that hard enough to believe with a good driver at the wheel let alone NPJ lol) - but they where taking pot luck with all the other factors involved imo

It would be bad enough imo if they had made an instant decision moments before the race, but they formulated the plan the day before (or at least elements of it)

That letter is meant to sound contrite and appologetic, but imo as soon as the details are considered its actually pretty pathetic
