If Button did that it would be all about the money...

Huge risk running against Lewis though, I certainly wouldn't back Button against Hamilton in the same car! But if he did win, he'd cement his record forever. Back to back championships and against an awesome team mate. He who dares?

I don't think it's about the money totally TBH. Jenson took a paycut for 2009, Rubens did not. Jenson now has options due to a title which he didn't have before.

If offered a Mclaren drive during any of his BAR/Honda years I'm sure he would have taken it. Who wouldn't, historically in the last 10+ years only them and ferrari have held together a top team. Mclaren showed this year the difference between 100 million to spend and 300 million even without the testing.

If I was advising button for next year and he got offered a seat I'd say take it. Mclaren is a top drive and you can bet they will be up there next year.

Where as I'm not convinced he will even win another race at Brawn past 2009.

The only sticking point would be how much backing he would get in comparison to Lewis. I'd fancy Button in a heavy format car against lewis over a race distance, right up until lewis old man started posturing again.

Regardless of money who here if offered both drives for 2010 would say stay at Brawn?

I don't get why any top-line driver (and a World Champion is surely top-line no matter what your opinion of him) would go to McLaren and play second fiddle to the Lewis Hamilton Show. And since McLaren have already proven incompetent so many times at running two top-line drivers without favouring one over the other then that's exactly what'll happen - he'd be joining a team built around another driver. Not a good plan if he wants to become the first British driver to win back-to-back titles.

I'd love to see Button go to McLaren. Not sure it'd be a good move for him, but nothing would prove his worth like beating Hamilton in a straight fight.

And how's he going to get a straight fight at a McLaren team built around another driver? :)

I want Button to do what he does best and remain loyal to a team he obviously loves and trusts.

I think this McLaren rubbish is being thrown about by his manager to get BGP to sign a deal.

IF Brawn get the rumoured investment from Mercedes then I believe the team can compete at the highest level against Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari (and at least one of those, maybe two will have the identical engine to Brawn, so its down to aero / grip of each individual team's creation)

He is also more likely to get No1 status, and that is why he shouldnt go to McLaren imo

The one question is that the team that designed the McLaren that won Lewis the car will have designed the 2010 car (with the team responsible for 2009 starting on the 2011 design) and the Brawn team who designed the last Honda are due back for 2010......

Ahh to forget the Williams/BAR saga in one swift move, what he does best indeed.

He who hath made no mistake at all can cast the first stone

BAR owed him millions which is why that saga played out. Richards was removed, Button got his money and Honda signed Jenson. If the company I worked for told me they were paying me peanuts but if I delivered I got x amount as a bonus and then they witheld it I'd look elsewhere as well.

I thought it was just another case of Frank Williams screwing over yet another British driver. My point being that he found a team he loved and stuck with them even until he was almost certain to drop out of F1 with them. But hey, anything to pee on the bonfire, as is the case with this years title.

It's funny how everything has to be negative all the time. Any other driver could come and clear up next year and you'll all ******* moan and forum posture about that too. I'm a big Jenson fan, but if someone beats him fare and square then so be it, I'm not going to cry about it. The fact is, he's never had a car to match "big" drivers till this season and we can't see till next year how things will pan out. Really is pointless trying to argue an unknown quantity :o

All this talk of Button to McLaren is one big cover up of what's really happening behind closed doors...Button to motoGP!

I actually think this has been planted by Bernie just at the right time so that less headlines get written about an ex Ferrari boss becoming head of the FIA

Of COURSE Bernie would NEVER do that would he!!!:D

an ex Ferrari boss

And Peugeot, don't forget. Oh, and remind me again, who are Peugeot tied up with? Might it be Citroen, as part of the PSA group? And might they be involved in a rally series organised by the FIA?

Citroen International Assistance!

It would indeed be a VERY bad move for Button.

The problem being that Hamilton is settled at McLaren and will therefore have a strong advantage. Effectively, he is on home turf. With this in mind, unless Button places bombs in Hamilton's car, during 2010, he will lose to Hamilton, by a large margin.

I do believe Hamilton is faster, however, the "home" advantage that Hamilton will enjoy, will magnify his superiority and make Button look worse than he actually is.

The only reason for Button to move to McLaren, is if he has a very big ego (like Senna), has absolute belief in his own ability (which he doesn't) and now wants some credibility, within F1 and wants to go head to head with Hamilton.

I think if Button joins McLaren, then like in 2008, it will be Massa and Alonso VS Hamilton (with the other McLaren car competely AWOL). If Kimi goes to McLaren, I do believe he will give Hamilton better (unintentional) support and at least fight directly with Massa.

If Kimi goes to McLaren, next year should be a titanic battle: Kimi and Hamilton vs Massa and Alonso.

Button to McLaren would be a bad move for McLaren, Button and F1 in general.

Um....what more credibility does Jenson need? He's World Champion. That's his credibility right there.

There are many who question his ability. On the BBC F1 programs, his lack of speed in the 2nd half of the season has been highlighted many times.

Yes. He was by far the highest points scorer in the 1st half of the season, ut winning a single championship is not the aim of any F1 driver. Drivers want to win many races and many championships.

Most F1 drivers and sports people in general crave adulation. And if they believe they are the best (or one of the best), they want others to acknowledge this.

If Button moves to McLaren, the only reason would be to show that he stacks up well against Hamilton. There cannot possibly be any other reason.

So? He's World Champion.

And I might remind you of Alonso's second half of the 2006 season, which wasn't exactly stellar compared with the first half....and he only had one driver to worry about catching him.
