***Official 2010 F1 thread***

LOL.

BTW, why are you guys so interested in Donnington? To my mind Donnington wasnt a great track, while Silverstone is a true driver's circuit, meaning it requires lots of skill and bravery to be fast there.

Have I missed something?

i think ive missed something too. Silverstone is great and needs to stay on the F1 calender for a long while yet.

In all of the 2010 goings on, is there any news on the removal of the stupid ban on in season testing! This season has proved it is to the detriment of the sport in the future with young drivers having no chance to test a car, just getting thrown in and hoping they are good. Bernies plan for Monday testing was a good one. But the Silverstone summer test was always a great way to spend a tenner!

I think a big question is how much BrawnGP held off developing this years car as they felt that:

a/Their car held enough of an advantage to hold on throughout the year

and

b/Without an unlimited budget, it was far better to put the development effort towards the 2010 car where the biggest teams are expected to have caught up or overtaken them

Starting late on a car won't be as much of a hindrance as it was last year as the rules are evolutionary not revolutionary and Loic (Brawn aero guy) seems to be pretty good at what he does!

Although... Button was outclassed by Fisi in 2001 (his second season), whereas Kova trounced Fisi in his first season (2007).

Just look at who managed Fisi at that time, and who the team boss was at Benetton..........

Not to mention the same person commenting earlier this year calling Button the equivelant of a sleeping policeman - think Flav wanted to be JB's manager and he got turned down flat, there is a lot of bad blood that hasnt been explained

Ross stated in Brazil a team started months ago designing the 2010 car - and actually considering the extra space they will need for fuel and the "adapting" Brawn needed to do to fit the Merc in anyway, I actually think next years car will also be revolutionary (although that latter obviously doesnt apply to the rest of the grid)

All cars definitely need to have a much longer wheelbase at the very least

There's an article doing the rounds from an interview with a BGP engineer on Pistonheads.

Essentially, the car was a massive compromise, as they had to fit the Merc engine at the last minute, necessitating cutting a 6 inch section out of their tub, bonding a new section in, and re-working their entire rear suspension geometry around a different crank height in the engine.

Once it got to the mid point of the season, they had refined developed it as far as they could without redesigning the entire tub and starting again - so they left it as is for the latter half of the season. Which is why everyone else overtook them.

Another interesting fact is that Button raced the entire season with one chassis. He didn't prang it, and there was no spare either (apparently!) That chassis MUST have lost a certain amount of it's stiffness after thousands of competitive miles, surely?

I'd be surprised if the chassis thing was true. Thought when Rubens crashed in Singapore they said they gave him a new chassis, so if they had one for him, then Button would have one too?

I read they made three chassis' all season. One for Button and two for Rubens.

Must it? I though carbon fibre worked great, worked the same, until one day it catastrophically doesn't anymore. That seems to be the case with carbon fibre bikes anyway.

I dont know - but it seems strange that teams would make numourous chassis if they didnt need to (Vettel's been infamously quoted riding/driving :D Ann and her dirty sister this season ......I dont think it was Ann but some girl's name)

Kate's dirty sister ;)

Carbon Fibre isn't some magical super material that's immune to stresses and fatigue... Surely thousands of stresses, twisting, loading and unloading must weaken it by at least some degree. And we know how much F1 chassis designers crave stiffness.

For me though, the fact that Button only used one chassis is more indicative of his consistency - I don't think he had a single spin all season (even in practice sessions, or the wet), let alone a shunt. Even Micheal Schumacher used to allow himself one big mistake in each WDC campaign.

What ever you want to call it in the first lap at Spa (not that it was his fault)

Thank you for correcting me , I knew it wasnt Ann but for the life of me I couldnt remember the right one lol

I'd forgotten that! But, shunted from behind doesn't really count to me - Jenson drove flawlessley and precisely all season, even under massive pressure.

He didn't slide off the road coming into, or out of the pits for a pivotal pitstop, shunt it into the wall trying too hard on a qualifying lap or make any mistakes when under pressure from a following car.

He also consistently made good forward progress in races, with a number of decisive overtaking moves - potentially more than any other driver this year, though that is speculation and guesswork, happy to be corrected!

For some reason I had Max's voice in my head when reading that... ;)

BOLLLL - now thats sick!!!!:D

Im sure someone will come along to massage the facts (just like politicians do with polling numbers) to make it look a lot worse........surnama? lol

Possibly... My view is that I don't see how anyone can say Button isn't a worthy champion? Of the other potential title contenders this year, who would have been more worthy?

Barrichello? No, he was whitewashed by his teammate early in the year and didn't win a race until mid season, despite having the "best car".

Vettel? No, he's made too many errors, even when not under pressure. He's won 3 races, but had the most DNFs of the front runners.

Webber? No, he's "only" won twice, and when he doesn't start from the front, he seems to languish midfield, and never make any headway in passing people. He's also had the most non-points finishes of the front 4.

Hamilton? No, his wins are obviously only down to his car. Look at his 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th place finishes just prior to the McLaren upgrade at Hungary where he suddenly won... He's obviously just a journeyman playboy driver only in it for the money, happy to languish around the back of the midfield, and only lucks into wins when his car is the best.... ;)

Now look at Jenson's record for the year...
