***Official 2010 F1 thread***

I dont understand how the wheel farings have lasted so long. Surely they are 'moveable aerodynamic part', definately more so than the mass dampers that Renault had banned. But I think the FIA are keen to remove anything that can fly off easily, especially seen as wheel tethers clearly arent working as they should. And plus, there ugly as sin.

Ferrari claimed that they were to help brake cooling (and aero was a secondary benefit) and thus got to keep them.

They then removed them at Valencia last year to aid brake cooling as they ran undersized brake cooling ducts to increase straightline speed.

They have never been about brake cooling (as far as I know). They have been about brake heating. Keeping the heat in the brakes to keep them at the 1000C they need to work best at. You dont want you brakes cooling down whilst blasting down a straight to find they arent hot enough and dont bite when you jump on the anchors at 200mph!

They were brought in by Ferrari to aid brake cooling. Everyone else jumped on board because they also guide air towards the back of the car.

So they are an aerodynamic aid.

Are they to cool the brakes or keep them in the optimum range (keep heat in?)

From what i understand, they are designed to keep the brakes at optimum temperature which helps to eliminate brake fade.

But, much like the engine tweaks "which increase reliability :D" they serve a dual purpose.

No wonder fia is introducing so many riules that subtract and go away from the core values of F1 when so many people want things banning for look reasons  utter stupidity.
