***Official 2010 F1 thread***

My first thoughts were...

"Wooo! McLaren get to loose the shiny shiny livery and go their own way! Woo, Orange McLarens here we come!!"

Then I realised that Orange cars with Red and White Vodafone sponsorship would be.... well, about as ugly as the orange red and white Renault livery... but then I though...

"Wooo! Return to the Red/White Marlboro style livery!"

What you recon?

McLaren WILL eventually walk away from F1.

That quote - however well rumoured it was - does not say anything about Merc wanting to walk away from F1 at all . Walk away from McLaren yes, I would agree, not walk away from F1 altogether though

Mercedes have denied they want an all german driver lineup, stating they would prefer an international team.

Seems strange how Haug has already admitted to having negotiations with Heidfeld - do they want a three car team? lol

Think Merc are trying to backtrack after discovering what a tricky situation they are in

lol, where did u get that from? or was it pure speculation?
It is entirely speculation on my part that McLaren will walk away from F1 before too long.

McLaren are not some government funded ego-trip as Ferrari are, they are a commercial organisation and clearly want to move into and compete commercially in the very high performance sports car market.

F1 no longer offers value for money in this marketplace. I can see McLaren moving towards competitions such as endurance racing and/or the World Sportscar Championship that are not so dominated by the Greedy Gnome.

I just had a thought, you know when at the last race they briefly interviewed Ron Dennis and he said he was working on 'something big / big project' and DC laughed at him saying F1 is his only big passion... I think we know what he was working on now :p

I agree and Mercedes split from Mclaren with Mclaren slowly buying back Daimler's shares is the first step for them to do this. For the long term, Mclaren want to concentrate on road going sports cars (and probably racing evolutions of them), which I think will eventually see them drop F1 due to costs.

You dont think they will go the way of ferrari and use the F1 arm as the major selling point?

I dont see Mclaren pulling out of F1 anytime soon :)

Exactly. McLaren sell their cars based on their technical heritage and engineering - not on style and passion. No way will McLaren pull out of F1.

I think that really depends on the direction of F1 in the future. Looks like like they'll be sticking around for at least the next 5 years, but after that they may re-evaluate whether it's worth staying in F1.

SO that £100 I spent on a Brawn Jacket and the £25 on the cap was a waste of money. What an utter joke. I'm a relatively new fan of F1 but this is just ridiculous. No wonder there aren't as many fans of F1 as there are of Football because at least with a football team they never change their colours (or name)... :( Gutted beyond words.

Well actually football teams are constantly changing their strips (either from new sponsorship deals or new designs of shirt / shirt manufacturer) but I guess the shade of colour rarely changes

What on earth possessed you to spend money on branded merchandise, it is ALWAYS a waste of money.

sometimes the brand "makes" the shirt /cap etc

I have a fav rugby shirt thats Tommy Hilfiger (sp) which is the comfiest shirt I own lol

My bet is that Jenson sticks with Brawn - he's been with the team for close enough to a decade, they're now financially sorted so should remain competitive and even if the salary isn't what he really deserves he should be able to make a good bit via endorsements/sponsorship.

Brawn should offer him a 3 year deal alongside Rosberg with performance based bonuses (although would Jenson trust another deal like that:rolleyes:) - with the longer term goal of moving the less-competitive driver aside for Sebastian Vettel in 2012.

Lol. You fail.

Football teams change their kit up to twice a year.

And if you honestly belive that the single most important factor in being an F1 fan is the merchandise there your a bit of an idiot.

Im a massive F1 fan, and the only bit of F1 team merchandise I own is a Honda/Button hat from about 5 years ago that was bought for me.

Plus, I still see loads of people at F1 events with Jaguar/Jordan/Arrows kit on!

True, but McLaren can offer more money, an equally or more competitive car, a solid team with long term success and a long term future. Fact is, McLaren can offer more than Brawn/Mercedes in every way, the only reason he would stay is out of misplaced loyalty. He has been loyal for years, and got the championship as his reward. He should now seek to join the best team available for the best money available, and also be prepaired to be directly up against the best driver, i.e Lewis, rather than Nico.

Kit of old teams is the best! Any fool with more money than sense can buy current merchandise. The real fans wear stuff that's at least 10 years old. That Brawn jacket will look great years down the line.

Very true

However the McLaren has been developed with Lewis in mind - and Lewis's driving style is complete opposite to Jenosn's (a reasonable amount of oversteer for Lewis vs a tiny amount of understeer for Jenson)

I cant see how one car can be desgned around two contrasting styles in one winter, and with Lewis being there for years (apart from being a favourite son) he will be the winner no matter what

At least JB knows the Brawn is suited to his style - even more so now he knows Rubens has been put else where and JB's experience will count a lot more for Winter design/implementation against either Heidfeld or Rosberg

Personally think JB is ****** either way, and Brawn / Merc have been really disrespectfull in regards to the offer given (no doubt because they dont really want JB in the car in the first place)

A DHill hat from 95 for me (dark blue Williams hat with the Hill helmet design) :)

I cant see how JB would make more than an additional £1m from better personal sponsorship deals, let alone the extra £3m - 4m he should be getting as a WDC

Ok I've read through all of the posts on this thread since the Mercedes announcement was made and have calmed down, a lot.

:)

The way I got into Formula 1 was Hamilton's 08' race at Silverstone where he kept the car on the track in that torrential downpour. I wasn't even a fan at the time and was minding my own business walking through my living room with the TV and race happening to be on.

It caught my eye and instead of walking to where I was going I sat down, in sheer awe at the way Hamilton managed to keep the car on the track. Since that moment onwards I was hooked, went to my first Grand Prix (Silverstone this year) and bought a Brawn/Jenson cap as even though it was Hamilton who got me into it the fact that this was an underdog with such a kick arse livery made me become a fan of them...

So next year, although I'll be sad to see the name Brawn disappear off the F1 radar, (hopefully) seeing Lewis and Jenson in the same team would be incredible.
