***Official 2010 F1 thread***

Well, McLaren won't have any excuses next year if they have the 2008 and 2009 World Champions in either car :p

I can't see Button being a bad move for McLaren in a huge sense, however I can't see it being a brilliant option for Button, trouble is it would seem to be one of the only options he has.

What Button should do is accept Brawns lower offer and **** up nick heidfeld :D

Neither Rosberg or Heidfeld are good enough to take on a title battle. This always happens when the germans take over.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Shumi announced as driver ;)

I think rosberg is potential championship material. Just look at his performance this year, in a fairly useless car. A lot of places made up on his quali positions. And just look at his team-mates placing.

In a good car I could see him doing pretty well personally. Heidfeld on the other hand......

So rons dream of mclaren becoming a full indy is one step closer.

Good luck to them, i would say next year should be interesting but everything going on in the sport is just dire.

Normally, I would prefer to have Kimi in the 2nd McLaren, rather than Button. However, the more I think about it, one thing Button knows is how to finish races. He is a very safe driver who always brings the car home in respectable positions. This is the very definition of a good No.2 driver.

Hamilton and a good No.2 driver (who doesnt step on Hamilon's toes) is ideally what McLaren need. Kimi and Button would both meet the requirements. Heikki's problem over the last 2 years is that although he usually brings the car home safely, he isn't fast enough during the race. This is something which Kimi or Button should both be able to solve.

Perhaps McLaren should take on Button.

Only problem is Button will have the No.1!

Only on the car - and only for a season (unless Button really does have a lucky charm and completely outperforms Hamilton in '10 and does win the WDC again)

Otherwise it will still be Hamilton that is the No1 from the team perspective

One thing Im surprised about is that from a marketing point of view I thought Brawn / Merc would have wanted the No1 car in all their promotional stuff

Im right in thinking that Mercedes will still be right at the (other) end of the pitlane from winning the Championship in 09 - and McLaren will still be 3rd one along even though they have No1 /No2 car?

edit - some reports are suggesting Vodafone will move with Merc from McLaren to Brawn

edit 2 -

Mercedes sports boss Norbert Haug has confirmed that talks with Nick Heidfeld about a seat for next season are taking place

Which kind of proves that Merc where always going to do the dirty on Button

Yeah, seems a shame that the BrawnGP/MercGP car will never actually wear the No.1 (unless of course it wins a future WDC). I cant see any reason why it wouldnt have the garage that Brawn would've had, it's still the same team but renamed.

Can't see vodafone moving at all, they're heavily engrained with Mclaren and the press release today included vodafone.

I don't like this one bit, as far as Button's career goes.

McLaren is a team that is entirely focused around Lewis Hamilton. Anyone coming in, even a reigning World Champion, is going to get screwed. Alonso was, off the back of two titles on the trot. Kovy was, off the back of a debut season that was actually fairly good. And there's every chance Button will be as well.

Two things he has in his favour right now though:

1) Ron Dennis is no longer as involved as he was in the operation of the racing team. That shift in culture, added to the fact that Button is the 2009 Formula One World Champion, might keep some balance in the team.
2) He's a better driver than Kovy by such a degree that it isn't even funny.

Hopefully, if it comes to it, that'll be enough. I don't think any of us, even sunama, want to see Button relegated to the role of "support Lewis Hamilton". Mind, judging by what I'm about to quote I might need to revise my "even sunama" bit of that statement....

Nice back-handed compliment there sunama. I would think that as reigning World Champion he'd merit a better assessment even from you than "a good No.2 driver".

You seriously think Button will be content to stay back in Hamilton's wake? What am I saying, of course you'd think that....

i'll be damned if i can follow all of this

1) Barrichello and Rosberg are doing a swapsie then ? Rosberg to Brawn/Mercedes Racing and Barrichello to williams

2) Button currently mulling over mercedes/brawn or a move to mclaren to join lewis hamilton

3) Alonson replacing kimi, kimi not got a clue who wants him yet, alonson joins massa at ferrari

4) Toyota and BMW both to leave F1

5) Lotus F1, Campos, USF1 and manor all joining

despite no confirmation over budget caps ?

about it so far ? :D

If he moves to McLaren he wont have any choice. It would be great for McLaren as they would have to drivers that can constantly get in the points. It would be bad for Button though. I think Hamilton would win on out right pace. Assuming he stops making mistakes and can cope with heavier fuel loads and tyres which is a big question.

I think the tyre issue really could prove to be Hamilton's downfall early on in this season,. I am sure he will adapt as the season goes on, but it might cause him some issues, and lose him some early points finishes.

Button is well known for his driving style, and should be much easier on his tyres if perhaps slower over a single lap.

Should make an interesting competition!

If that were to happen, then there could be no doubt that Button is the daddy of F1.

Winning the World title for Brawn in 2009. Then switching teams for 2010 and outperforming the most naturally gifted driver we've seen in a long time, in a team which favours Hamilton, would be the mark of one of the all-time greats. I'm not even sure if MS could've achieved his feat.

Alonso came very close (won the title in 2006, then moved to a new team and almost beat Hamilton, but was only able to match him on points totals) and this is why I rate Alonso so highly.
