imo reading the stewards decision this is a clear argument for an amendment to the penalty rules to give the ability to fine the team/constructors points but not give the driver a grid penalty, they all agreed that Charles could do nothing in the tunnel

Both drivers agreed that there was little that Leclerc could have safely done in the tunnel to avoid impeding Norris, given the difficulty in vision due to the light entering and in the tunnel and the change of lines from one side of the tunnel to the other. In fact, the Stewards observed that Leclerc reacted in a sensible way to a blue flag displayed by the marshals, but at this point it was too late.

but then went on to say that the Pit Wall had plenty of time to warn Charles of Norris' fast lap and give time to avoid impeding

Nah. Only penalties for drivers have bite, anything else is a little wrist tickle.

I do think, though, they've become a bit unreasonable in their expectation of impeding. Especially on a track like Monaco, it's not reasonable to expect that drivers are always able to avoid impeding another driver; a driver who has behaved sensibly and avoided dangerous actions should not be penalised, imo.

Problem is the moment you introduce "leeway", it will get gamed.

So do a NASCAR Daytona 500 then, and have a different qually programme for Monaco. No reason why they couldn't have a Monaco-specific qualifying format.

Awesome qualifying.

Crazy third sector from Max

Disappointed that Lewis didn't try another lap. He seemed to have loads of time left after he set that good lap. Thought he might have squeezed another tenth or so and pushed himself up a few places.

Really wanted Alonso to get pole. If it doesn't rain/there is no drama, Max is just going to win it at a canter.

Whoever is pole usually wins at a canter in Monaco

I don't really get the hopes for rain here. It's 2023. The sport doesn't work in the rain. We know exactly what would happen, because the did it happen last time.
Red flag, safety cars and a slow procession, where my Gran in a Micra would be able to keep the pack stuck behind her.

Alonso had been slow in the final sector all week. This was something that was talked about in free practice as to why he was so fast in the slow corners in the earlier part of the lap but comparatively slower in the similar corners later in the lap.

Some grid stats for the nerds like me :p

The Monaco Grand Prix has been won from the front row of the grid 48 times, including in all but two of the last 13 races in the principality. The race has been won from third or further back 22 times – including in 2022, when Sergio Perez won from third on the grid.

In the last 11 races at the circuit, there have been just three occasions that the top three on the grid have all finished on the podium, with 2014 and 2018 seeing the top three finish in the same order that they started.

The Monaco Grand Prix is such a procession that whoever takes pole will win, right? Well, not quite. The polesitter has won only twice in the last seven Monaco Grands Prix.

Perhaps surprisingly, from the 68 F1 races held here, the polesitter has won only 30 times, giving a pole to win conversion rate of well under 50%.

Obviously we can add the caveat (especially with that last one) that modern car reliability has changed things somewhat. Still, it's something to bear in mind.
