And what are they playing at with this Alonso penalty. Absolute nonsense. Surely the rule says “no mechanic or equipment can touch the car in any way”. Do they have primary school children write the rule book?

The Race has a good video explaining it. Basically the rule says "it may not be worked on" but doesn't specify exactly what that means. Because the front jack is used to position the car correctly, they've been allowed to touch the car with the front jack (but not lift it) and nothing else. What Aston did is get the rear jack in place too. They argued that because it has been accepted that the front jack is okay, the rear jack must be okay too, and that there was no clear prior agreement with the teams (like the stewards claimed).

Was this different to Ocons infringement last week then?

As someone on Reddit said nicely in answer to that:
“I believe that their flagrant disregard for the rules time and time again is the reason why they're successful yes.”

RB have a history of dubious practices the whole time they’ve been in F1. We may all know about the overspend, but there’s always a lot more going on that we don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see what the other teams manage to uncover as the season goes on.

Edit: It just occurred to me that AlphaTauri use the same engine. So RB have somehow got 17mph on everyone else down the straights through aero alone? Why isn’t the AT up there in straight line speed? Or is it? Madness…
It hilarious that you think every other team is the second coming of our one true lord and saviour, ready to do battle with RB. The entire game is about exploiting the rules to gain an advantage - every team does it.

Aero efficiency plays a big part. AM use the Merc engine and Merc parts, yet they're noticeably better. AT might use the same engine and some RB parts, but their concept is different, their setups are different, the data they gather and how they use it is different.

What are these dubious practices you speak of? Off the top of my head I don't recall any car design / operating scandals from Red Bull.
Flappy wing, flexi floor? I dunno, anything that Horner said to Masi in 2021? lol..

Cheers. Yeah just a case of poor writing with regards to the rules then.

Well which is it? There's more going on that we don't know about but also there's been a history of dubious practices the whole time from RB?

Don't you know that because of a feisty 21 season ALL of RB 13 year history is just them cheating, putting rocket fuel in their engines and sabotaging other teams.
BUT only when they were doing well, got to conveniently ignore all the seasons where Mercedes with a tuned down car destroyed every single car on track in tern forcing RB to ditch Renault engines to try to be competitive.

Pretty average race.

Surprised that the Ferrari's were so poor on the hard tyre, to the point where they didn't even bother the Mercs. They don't really look all that quick in the race to be honest (IE more on a par with AM/Merc).

Shame that safety car didn't come later for Lewis. The timing of it kind of nullified any advantage of starting on the hard tyre. Although it did mean he could get track position over the Ferraris I guess. Presumably he dropped off George after 5 or so laps as he had to nurse those mediums a bit for 30+ laps. It looked like he almost had George at the beginning of the stint.

I'm glad Alonso's penalty was revoked.

The RB is hilariously quicker than the rest of the field.

Another pathetic weekend of nonsense from the FIA....

Waiting 30 odd laps, then the podium celebrations, then deciding the pitstop penalty was wrong, then un-applying that penalty when they were shown numerous other instance of the same thing.

It's a joke, it's like re-refereeing a football game after it's finished...

FIA have been a total embarrassment for years now..... As a F1 fan for probably 30+ years, it's literally the most boring spectacle at the moment and has been for a good few years.

RB dominate for 4/5 years, then Merc and now back to RB again.... It's so predicable it's boring...

RB will have both drivers/manufactures titles wrapped up with 8 or 9 races to go at this rate....

Should start giving out weight penalties or something like horse racing to at least even the field/make it more of a "race" and not a procession every round.....

If Aston Martin have actually copied Red Bull’s aero and paired it with a good chassis as well as Mercedes power, I can see them being ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes at the end of the season based on the first 2 races.

In other news, McLaren have managed to take a huge step backwards from being midfield scrappers in 2022 to backmarkers in 2023.

The Aston aero isn't that similar to Red Bull, particularly the top of the sidepods is quite different. It's a sort of blend of Red Bull and Ferrari, as well as the parts they get from Merc.
