***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Thanks for all your advice guys.

The system would not post at all above 1600 Mhz no matter what I tried with 16 Gb of the quad channel kit (G skill Ripjaws Z) I have. I tried:

1.25 NB volts (too chicken to go above)
1.65 DRAM volts

I even tried really lax timings at 12-13-13-34 and still nothing. I also tried to get there via BCLK and also played with NB and HT frequencies - nothing. Got so ****ed that nearly ordered some new RAM.

Then I took out 2 sticks and left the system with 2 x 4 GB. Booted it up using XMP profile 1 at 9-10-9-28 and 1.65V and it works perfectly. Also stable with my 24/7 OC on the CPU (8320) at 4.5GHz - max temps 50C at 1.4V (idle 18C). I only have it on an antec kuhler 620 so not really going to push it for 24/7 but this thing is a monster. OCs up to 5 GHz without much sweat.

So really the only downside now is my system only has 8 Gb of RAM and I have a spare 8 Gb on a shelf. Maybe I should just build yet another system :D

I wouldn't worry too much about RAM. You don't gain much at all from anything above 1600MHz anyway - higher CPU clocks are a million times more important.

If you have to loosen timings to get a higher speed it's not worth it, you'll make slight gains and slight losses.

Strange, I had the same problem with my RAM. Ran fine at it's stock 1600Mhz speed on my old set up, but wouldn't post once the CPU was clocked. Mine is currently running at just over 1400Mhz after the FSB tweaking.

Similarly, I had the same problems with my GPU as farmerboy. Ran fine at 1200/1400 on the old system, but display driver kept crashing once CPU clocked.

It's like the CPU is trying to push the rest of the system harder to keep up with it's new clocks. I've no idea whether that would make any sense what so ever but that's how it seems! :D

That's what pushing up the FSB does, however there should be dividers or settings to lock off the issues when you get decent Mobos (which you all have).

Hmm...

did you find a fix for this ^^ orch? I still cant run bf4 or 3 since cpu overclock, but i can run any other game which is really odd.

still rock solid @ 4.8ghz :D

ordered my gpu waterblock so whole system be under water soon

I'm seriously thinking about going back into watercooling now. I am sure I can get 24/7 5GHz overclock working properly with a bit lower temps.

Nah mate, just keep playing with my clocks lowered and not had a problem since
