***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

hi,

Sorry forgot to say every thing is at stock at the moment, only got it up and running yesterday and had a million windows updates to install and have a problem getting my sound card to work. (check my thread in sound city)

Central heating is now on, not sure on room temp though, pc gets plenty of air and sit quite close to the window which is always open when im home.

I've read in this thread that its better to use a combination of the multiplier and FSB to get a stable oc, just not to sure how to go about it yet.

ah your local, littlehampton is on my door step :)

There's a few Saber owners matey so you should be well looked after :) I'm a spoiled kid and went with the Crosshair :D

I'll be moving to Aldwick when I come back. My home is in Climping (or Clympyng if you want to be really old :D )

Got my FX 8320 and Asus Crosshairs V formula Z coming tomorrow, with a H100i for good measure!

That'll be everything Except the GPU which I'm holding out for a while longer (at least until the R9 290x).

Excellent - two wee budding AMD brothers joining us - welcome and enjoy! :p

Thanks for the screenies Rich!

Same here mate, I got hold of two 7770's before summer for £75 total so hoping they will suffice till Christmas where I can look at a better single GPU.

No worries m8 did get ya message on steam but missus wanted me off got p whipped lol

She is running sweet getting my new ram thursday avexir green 2133mhz fully stable @ 4.8ghz gonna leave it at that for now and get back to gaming have loads new games I aint touched yet

My 2 7970 outperformed 7990

In my opinion get 2 7970 asus direct top 2 or asus matrix there cheap now and will out perform 7990
My friend has 7990 and my 7970's beat it

That's completely normal. It's kinda like 680 SLI vs a 690.

But with one card you have one card, one set of heat to deal with and so on. I also don't know if it's just me going crazy but I could swear the micro stutter on my 3870x2 was never as bad as my 5770s. Mind you that's not a concern any more but I'm sure I read that the latency is lower when you run them 'mechanically connected' if that makes sense. Could just be a urban myth, though.

IMO the 7990 is much more desirable and easy to live with than two heat sources eating slots and space. You also need to beef up your cooling far more.

I'd take a 7990 over my 670 SLI any day :)

Both options are viable.

I generally accepted Crossfire was originally for people who bought one card who could later on pair it up to boost GPU performance. Just before I built this rig it was one of the last wishes to check crossfire out on the P45 board.

Crossfire is not ideal but when the price or situation is right it is a great option to be able to use. I would be gutted if I invested in a mobo these days that could not run sli/crossfire due to the MM, auction sites or mates selling the same card for a fraction of the price it used to be!

Played some PS2, was great to play at 60fps once more! I hear there is an optimisation patch on the way too. Just de-rusting myself for the BF4 release.

Any of you guys pre-ordered BF4?

Not yet no. I'm waiting to see how the single player is before I pay for it, plus I want it on DVD.

Had a bit of a result today. Well, I think I have.

Basically I have a Asrock 990FX Extreme 3 that went pop. I phoned the company I bought it from and they said order another and send back the one I have and they'll send me a refund. Thing is, since I ordered it (for £89) other boards have dropped in price. This time around I don't need SLI support (and I can hack it to work any way, tried and tested on 16x 4x) so I found this.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/

For £59. So I asked the company for a refund (sorted, they've sent me return labels) and ordered the Asus.

Now looking at it it's got one hell of a VRM heatsink. I highly doubt it's 4+1 (the Asrock was, which is why I wanted to try something else) but it could be 6+2? I need to do more digging but hey, I have a £30 surplus so I'll get that back in my pocket and some one just offered me a 4890 1gb (so a second one for Crossfire) for postage as the fan on it is broken. Easy ten minute fix.

Edit. OK Asus are honest, that's good. It's 4+2. But at least it has VRM cooling as the Asrock did not. And it's cheaper. And it's Asus. So I'm still well chuffed.

Ive had a quick scan on this thread, I have an Asrock 970 Extreme 4 and an 8350 running stock with a H50 Corsair Cooler.

Anyone had much experience with this board? Is it as simple as going into the Bios and setting it to 4.2ghz, 4.4 etc...?

Im such a n00b. :)

The Extreme4 only has a 4+1 design, so it's not likely to overclock very well. You should manage 4.2GHz though, either via the multiplier or bus speed, and anything over 4.0GHz is worth it. I don't think you'll get much higher.

I had 4.2ghz on my 990FX Extreme 3 which I believe is pretty much the same power wise.

That was all it would do and I needed a H100 to do it. H50 will not get that far IMO. You may just about scrape a full 8 core 4ghz.
