***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

I wonder if you guys can suggest anything here,

Im getting a weird spike in CPU usage when streaming and playing Battlefield 3. Core temp seems to suggest idle is around 9c and when under load my temps are 40c at 55% usage.

Im using an 8350@4ghz cooled by a Corsair H50 on an ASrock 970 Extreme 4. Could it be the vrm overheating and going mental causing my system to lock up for 10-15 seconds?

Do you think turning off the Cool and Quiet is reccomended to try and combat this issue? This has only become apparent since upgrading to a 7970 Matrix Plat

any help would be great.

Coretemp is the wrong measure for AMD. Try HWmonitor and look at the CPU temp and voltages.

Possibly a power issue or cooling, airflow in case. What PSU do you have, case fans etc. Corsair H50 is a bit low end for the FX8350, but should be about OK at stock.

Check CPU-Z while CPU is loaded for throttling. Turning off cool and quiet will not affect load performance in games IMHO.

Got a Corsair RM 750 (about 2 months old) I have a Fractal Design R4 with 2 140mm in the front, one in the top and one bottom of the case so plenty of cooling really. Any good coolers you would recommend for the 8350?

The freezing will be GPU recovery.
You either have a weak PSU or the VC is overclocked too much.

GPU errors can be recovered which I am sure is what you are seeing when playing BF3.

And how would i combat this? Was kinda hoping its not the PSU. Thought the Corsair RM series were solid :(

First try reducing the core and memory clocks on the VC.
See if that fixes it
Someone will suggest the best utility to use.

hehe same psu as me !

For a cooler? h100, h100 or h100 (or h100i).

A H80 will also do the job..

That is of course if you want the big overclocks.

It's what's referred to as a no brainer mate :)

The price on the h100 is nuts. Ive heard that it wont fit in the fractal design R4, or at least a lot of people have trouble fitting it!

Maybe that H80 though ... would you say it would be a huge upgrade on the H50?

Yup 100% upgrade. The radiator has twice the fluid capacity mate.

I had a H60 (same as 50 different pump and block) and I couldn't even get 4.2ghz without throttling. H80 and 100 whole different ballgame :) 5ghz easy for fun with 4.7ghz liveable and cool as a cucumber :)

Maybe we should all do a controlled test of cooling... All set same clock speed and run aida for the same time?

I haven't seen any evidence that 240mm aio LCS perform any better than air. I can see how a kraken would be good if it would fit

We covered this before a few pages back mate, but, here's the upshot.

Air coolers are worse on AMD FX because of the way the chips are made. So think about it like this.. The 8 core has four dual core modules, one in each corner of the CPU. That means the heat is all over the lid of the CPU.

Some air coolers (like the NHD-14) have quite a small contact plate, where as the H100 and H80 have a very large square contact plate on the pump block that covers the CPU completely.

When AMD launched Bulldozer they gave you a H70 with it (which is the same as a H80 only it's Asetek so round pump) The H80 is the same, only made by Coolit and has a large square pump block.

I'm not saying that all air cooling on the FX CPUs is crap, just that because of the chip design and heat dispersion the AIOs will work better at cooling.

For my lady's rig I don't have a choice, I have a Scythe Ninja (it was £15 delivered) which are good on AMD CPUs (the P2s) and that's because of the way it's laid out. It has heatpipes in each corner of the contact plate, and the contact plate is pretty large (it was initially designed to cool 140w Phenoms which were bloody hot).

I'll let you know some data, but yeah, the Ninja 3 rev B was the best air cooler for AMD.

Yeah I do love the look of a water cooler. Especially when you have a sexy work of art like the CHV :)

I'm looking forward to getting my 7990 in now.. I can also use my Killer E2100 that lights up red. Definitely a sexy card to pair with the CHV :)

Yes indeed! Getting mine delivered 4-5pm. Some tinkering with the rig tonight.

Reverted bios to 1503 and it seems to have fixed the shutdown problems so I am not cursing Asus so much today.

Man, go look at the 7990 prices

I usually always get screwed over when acting on impulse. Not this time !

OMG :):):):)

Could literally sell it again today and make £100+ profit. Not going to, but I think this purchase is the bargain of the century.

The offer you got for £371 and the £471 (what I paid with a free PSU) was the best offer yes. Limited time too.

Not really interested in the Nvidia drops as I want Mantle.
