***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Small mod to my lady's upcoming rig ! Today the acrylic I ordered to change the window colour arrived. I had a orange one in there to match the Cougar fans but it didn't look right with white fans.. So I ordered this stuff.

It's new. UV reactive pink. It glows. Here is here stuff.

And with the new window fitted. I'm going to use the left over pink to make her a SLI bridge cover :)

It's going to be one heck of an 8 core rig when I'm done :)

rig looks sweet alex can you get that perspex in green?

Well done farmerboy, you are managing to achieve nice clocks and at low volts. Excellent setup.

I am now using prime95 to confirm what I saw on IBT. System seems stable but I think I have discovered a CHVFZ motherboard glitch and might have to RMA. I may live with it.

cheers dude sooooo chuffed managed to lower voltage from 1.440 down to 1.428 and higher clock so chuffed temps are good gaming obviously high @ stressing also the fiance has tropical heat in the house lol
with new ram cinebench will bost as well :D

oh really what problem has cropped up thought those boards were solid?

Hehe, know what you mean about other halves!

New RAM certainly will help with Cinebench.

Yes the ROG boards are generally solid. I am getting shutdowns when first powering up the system and they seem to happen prior to POST. I am in the process of diagnosing the issue. I have to clear CMOS and then enter bios and load my OC profile to get into windows each time. Happened with win7, win 8 and 8.1.

I just tried to run memtest86 from a bootable DVD and it shut down 30 seconds after commencing the test. Tried at stock speeds, overclocked and using only 1 stick ram.

I am slightly stumpted as it is totally solid when in windows and no crashes or blue screens there.

It may be a RAM, mobo or PSU issue and I am trying to eliminate the possibilities. Testing RAM currently with the extended windows memory diagnostic.

looking @ these for ram

here is my 3D mark score only using one of my 7970 atm

near 10k with cpu @ 4.9GHz maybe ram will bost it?

had same issue when first built my rig turned out to be psu in the end so annoying hope you crack it due

I am getting shutdowns when first powering up the system and they seem to happen prior to POST.

I seen some strange activity in my previous system that had booting issues. I reckon it's the power saving hardware they incorporate, it had a distincy noise when powering and often hung around the RAM check in the POST.

Sometimes it would take tens of resets/off-on attempts but once it got past the RAM check the system would get into windows and run solid.

Cheers guys, yes a similar issue happened with my Z77 board (maximus V Gene) where it would shutdown prior to post but then recovered itself and posted and booted normally.

Nikki, I will try rolling back to the previous bios to see if that works. Currently on 1602 and I have to say that with win 8/8.1 was a dog's breakfast in terms of instability within the OS. Win7 is rock solid.

I'm not sure mate. It's new apparently. The edges glow even under normal light, it's kinda funky !

Andy have you got/tested your 7990?

Not yet mate no. I'm right in the middle of moving now. I've packed all of my PC gear and brought it to my mother's house so it doesn't get damaged or banged about in the move. Alienware is wrapped in bubblewrap, my rig is back in the box the case came in and all of my parts and stuff (inc the new GPU and PSU) are packed safely in boxes and sitting in mum's dining room :D

I won't be on my rig now until we've signed the contracts tomorrow and collected the keys later in the week. I have a bad feeling it's going to be delayed as my landlady to be lives in London and we're about to be battered by a storm here :(

Mum is 4 miles from the sea and our new place is right on it, dead bottom South of the UK (and right in the middle) it could be a long night :( we already had power cuts in Dorset where we currently live last night for several hours..

So sadly no, I'm out of tinkering for a bit (could be a couple of weeks now).

I'll be around in spurts though (I've got my M11x loose and with me :) )

Good luck with it all Andy.

I should have my 7990 tomorrow and will try to fit tomorrow night.

The big decision is do I keep the 7950 and can that run in tri-fire with a 7990? Even if it does, I suspect the 2 of them will turn the rig into a nuclear power plant in terms of heat. I would also need a monstrous PSU (my current one doesn't even support SLI).

You can run it like that yes. Fun for benchmarks, a pain for real world use.

AMD says 750w for one, 1000w for two. I'd say 900 watts or more so it could prove to be a false economy really.

So peeps have gone from upgrading cheap mobos to sabertooth/crosshairs, now it's time to fork out for GPUs?

I am disappointed that my 7970 is voltage locked so can't be OCed at all... thinking of selling it and getting a matrix platinum or maybe even a 290x

The 7970 is perfectly fine, but farcry 3 has to set to a measly 'high' - I even tone down bf3 to hold 60+ on the larger maps. I think if I could clock to 1200-1250mhz I wouldn't feel any itch at all, but having zero overclock ability is quite depressing!

Although I am the poor man of the GPU pack with my XF 7770's I will have to see how they get on with BF4 before making any rash decisions on what to do next.

I thought the 7950 would have been my next progression, however now I am seeing the 7990 madness I think a 7970 or 290 will be the bar to aim at methinks.

I know a man who has one for sale ;) changing my 2 for 7990 there voltage locked but still run most games maxed :D

Csn confirm that 4 hrs gaming tonight my 4.9 ghz didn't show any signs of weakness. @ these low volts and temps think I will run it for everyday use

With the 7990 here tomorrow, I will have a spare 7950. Only 2 weeks old and it is a HIS ICEq boost. Let me know if you want it and we can discuss :)

I've listed my 7970 windforce on a certain local classifieds site... If nobody bites, the gf isn't going to be happy at me splurging on something only a little better!
