***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

Part of me is tempted by nvidia gsync, but then I imagine the extortionate prices on 780s and can only imagine how badly nvidia would rip me off if I swapped over to a gsync monitor

I think AMD will counter it. Possibly creation of an open VESA standard to compete with G-Sync.

Nvidia will not go unchecked which can only result in better prices for us in the future.

I hope so. Its always the case that GPU matters more than CPU, but if the claims over gsync are true then it would make cheaper CPUs like the 83x0 even better value

Have to agree. No brainer on that purchase, I just hope a similar deal pops up in the future - I mean before the new R9 series was launched OcUK was regularly having GPU offers that were always tempting.

It can only be a good thing all this competition is occurring to benefit the consumers!

So I'm slowly ticking my FSB up a bit further. Trying to go very slowly to make sure I keep volts as low as possible at each stage. 4.555ghz running at 46-48C on AIDA - not hugely impressive compared to the rest of you, but messing with the bios seems rather more than fun than all these modern games...

Keep the faith BP, mostly frustrating but once you get somewhere there seems to be a chunk of gratification tinkering in there!

Running 24/7 around 4.5 is nothing to be scoffed at especially when you consider it's an extra 1Ghz over its stock setting.

I updated my GPU driver the other day to the beta 6 version and seems to have alleviated a lot of the lock ups I was seeing.

I think my fan profiles need work...

I have a very steep slope so they run near minimum until I hit 50C on the socket, then they basically go 100% and my temps instantly drop to the low 40s. Unfortunately the fans seem to then get stuck at 100% and have to be manually turned down again :P

So here is the 7990 I received today guys:

Very well built card and a lovely backplate. Here are some pics in the rig. This isn't a thing of beauty and the colour coordination was mainly determined by what fans I had left :).

Here is the first 3DMark 11 run at only 4.6 GHz on the 8320 and the 7990 at bone stock. Pretty nice GPU score I think at over 18000. The CPU was being utilised at 100% at points in this so need to repeat this with it OCed to 5GHz + and check some results. The card is effortless. I haven't read up on how to overclock it or whether there are any custom bioses, but thermally, not an issue. Less than 57 C top temps at load. There is coil whine, but not annoying and they all do it.

When I get a chance, I will OC both the CPU and the GPU and also do some game benches.

When it describes it as "Triple Dissipation" made of ice, does it mean it can melt the entire north pole in a single run of firestrike? :-) Are you going to add it your CPU loop or do you have something else planned?

Ticking up a bit further... had a good run of aida and a 733 cinebench

Cheers guys.

Burnt, this was supposed to be my son's system but I have enjoyed tinkering with it so much, I took it over. He is currently using my 3930k system until we swap over again at some point. Haven't decided whether to put the 7990 under water yet. Need to read about the limitations of the card.

Man they're big cards lol. I can't wait to get my hands on mine :D

You're better off running 3dmark (13) as 11 only uses 6 processor cores Alex.

Yes you'll love it. It is an absolute beast. Yes I have bought 3DMark 11 and 3DMark (13) so will run some firestrike scores at performance and extreme settings.

Will be interesting to see how far this card overclocks. Seems at stock MSI AB is saying it gets fed 1.2V.

I don't usually OC my GPUs. I might have a go though :D

So some news... Yesterday we signed our contracts for the flat ! we pick the keys up Thursday and the removal co are arriving on Sunday. So mid next week? I should be back and kicking :D I've got a beautiful oak desk (solid oak all the way through to the drawer bottoms and everything).

My lady's laptop (The Asus) was delivered to a neighbour it said. We came home and went straight to the neighbour but nothing.. Hmm... Tried the other two cottages on the lane, nothing. Now I was panicking. So eventually we came home ready to argue with the courier and there it was in the porch. ****ed off, but it was safe and sound.

What a beast :O OMG this thing is huge and built like a tank. I spent the evening putting on 7 HP for her and I have to take her laptop apart later and put the drive from it (her old HP) into the new one (it holds two drives) then install Steam into her DIR and that should be her sorted :)

Woke up and the Asus M5A97 R2.0 is here, so that's her gaming rig all complete part wise. I did buy some cool labs liquid pro, so I'll use that on hers and when I fit my 7990 I'll repaste mine. I'm currently using some £3 crap white stuff that's all sloppy.

Big day today... Packing lol :(
