**Official Asus A8N-SLI Premium Thread**

Can someone recommend a h/s and cooler to fit this board pls. spec in sig.

I did buy an xp120 as thermalright said it would fit but they lied! The hs overhangs the first two memory slots, so you effectively can't run dual channel mode. SO.. can anyone recommend something that won't block the dimms?

if you turn the xp120 around 180 degrees so that the pipes overhang the mosfets you should have enough clearance to do what you like with the ram.

whilst i was trying things out for size it appeared that the pipes would be in the way of one of my Corsair DDR XMS3500LL Pro TwinX's as they have high heatsinks - turning the xp120 around so the pipes are away from the ram slots solved this problem.

Having read through this thread and found it extremely helpful, I thought I would share my problems, and their solutions in the hope it will help someone else.

Firstly, apologies, its the Deluxe version, not the Premium, but as they are nearly identicle the same solutions might apply. I did originally have the Premium, but as the case is the Lian Li, the infamous heatpipe problems resulted in a swap to the deluxe.

Started off having terrible problems with the board recognising a Maxtor SATAII drive. I could not get it to recognise it for love nor money. Eventually fixed by moving the drive to the red SIL ports and setting up a JBOD RAID config on the disk and installing the SIL 3rd party driver. Windows then worked fine.

The next problem was the PC would not restart, only shutdown and start. It hung on the windows screen, or a black screen when the mouse first appears.

Fixed this by flashing the BIOS to the lastest (1016 iirc).

Board now works a treat. After an incredibly stressful build, it's now working fine.

final specs:

Asus A8N SLi Deluxe
AMD FX-57
CorsairXMS TwinX Pro 2GB
2x XFX 7800GTX Extreme
Maxtor 250GB SATAII
WD 160GB SATA
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty
Enermax Noisetaker 600W
Lian Li V1000 Case

initial 3D Mark 05 score was 12,646. Hoping to push it up into 13K when its properly configured.

I couldnt get over 250 in slots a1 and b1 but as soon as using slots a2 and b2 it went up to 270 but cant get over that whatever i do. Have tried swapping board, memory and cpu and exactly the same so am guessing its a compatibility issue. Did you have to run 1.6v on the chipset for that?

Yea, i run the board 1.6v and the Ram at 2.85 (toastie). Although i only have one stick of 1Gb in slot closest CPU.

Thinking of getting this board to go with my 7800gt, anyway was wondering if theres any issues with using a Zalman cnps9500?

Fits lovely, Super cooler this.... 42 on load for me at 2.85 gig and 33 idle.

anybody had problems with this mobo not booting or POSTing in dual channel mode? ive spent weeks trying to solve the problem, runs fine in single channel but not even an error beep when memory is in slots A1+B1

i stuck the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro , nice cooler this.

For anybody wondering about this combination :

I managed to get the 3500LL Pro in with the Freezer 64 pro.

You have to dismantle the fan , fit the memory and put the fan back on, over the first dimm.

Clearance is about 1mm , but it works

I might have more luck in here..

I'm getting CMOS Checksum Error : Default Loaded once the post messages have completed.

This A8N-SLi Premium is brand new - no OS loaded. Please help! :(
Just completed building the rig then this! D'oh!!

about to purchase Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM to run off the motherboards sata connection, anyone had a problem with the HD sata drives on this MOBO?

I had it the other way round on when i had the premium and it helped cool the mofsets and chipset a bit. Was bit tight but i used memory slots a2 and b2 and that allowed much higher o/c as well. If you think its tight on the asus with the xp120 then you should see how tight it is on the dfi expert and its also very close to vga card too with the dfi

I have 2 x 74GB Raptors and a 300GB WD Caviar all running off my SATA ports all running perfectly.

similar to mattross, i've two 74 gig raptors striped and two samsung spinpoints (sata II) non raid. these are all running off the nvidia sockets and i've yet to update the bios or anything since the day i bought it - still in the 'testing' period but everything appears to work fine.

i can't honestly remember now but if you've read through this entire thread, rossy t, and you've not come across any complaints then it sounds safe to me.

any of you chaps tried the 1011 beta bios?

I've had to have a go with it because the 1009 once again stopped letting me reboot, its a problem thats been identified I believe with the 1007 where you would reboot, it hangs at the windows screen and then you have to power off and reboot and it goes in ok.

This time I would reboot and every time it would hang unless I went in via safe mode, chose system rollback and then it rebooted ok... reboot immediately after that and it hung

updated to this 1011 and its behaving perfectly again.. I think unless they come up with an extra couple of 0.vs for X2s I'm going to stay away from bios flashing now its stable! 1.5v... pah! I need 1.7!

anyone know what them little white latches are for on the end of each pci-e slot? i've looked and there's nowt in the instruction book about it and can't seem to find anything on the web.

i asume they are to secure the gfx card but they don't seem to pivot in anyway

any ideas ???

Hey all just got this board and was wondering if I could ask some newbish questions answered :p (I do plan reading through this whole btw just havent got the time at the mo).

1: What are the best sata drivers to use?
2: Do I need to re-install XP or can I just keep going with my current install?
3: Whats the most up to date BIOS at the mo and how do I tell what bios I've currently got?
4: Whats HDD S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring?
5: Why is my CPU Fan spinning at max speed the whole time?
6: Whats ACPI Suspend Type, I currently have it set at S3 at the mo?

If anyone could provide an answer any of my questions I would appreciate it, espicially the 1st one(havent been able to get my Raptor detected yet :( )
