Hey all just got this board and was wondering if I could ask some newbish questions answered :p (I do plan reading through this whole btw just havent got the time at the mo).

1: What are the best sata drivers to use?
2: Do I need to re-install XP or can I just keep going with my current install?
3: Whats the most up to date BIOS at the mo and how do I tell what bios I've currently got?
4: Whats HDD S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring?
5: Why is my CPU Fan spinning at max speed the whole time?
6: Whats ACPI Suspend Type, I currently have it set at S3 at the mo?

If anyone could provide an answer any of my questions I would appreciate it, espicially the 1st one(havent been able to get my Raptor detected yet :( )
Hi cathain,

You dont need sata drivers for this board. When you go into the bios, just activate 'First sata master' and continue depending on how many drives you have. As for a fresh install, this is necessary as the windows that is currently installed on your hard drive will be configured to your old machine and motherboard IRQ's etc
Ps it would be wise to read the book. Anymore questions just give me a shout :)

Hmmm strange, somebody else replied yesterday with a big detailed answer. Seems to have disapeared now? Anyway as I already stated in a reply which seems to have disapeared aswell, its all going good now. Just had to insert the sata plugs in the black(nvraid) ports instead of red(sil).

I went for a fresh install and everything went well. Qfan also quietened down my cpu fan considerably. Thanks for you reply Wildman ;)
No all I have to do is figure how to get the MBM5 Sumang posted to work?

i 'think' this is the correct way...

download mbm5 and install from the official website. make sure it's not running after the installation and then copy the folder that you got from Sumang into the same folder you've installed mbm5 - you are basically replacing all the files that have been installed with the files that Sumang has provided. you should get the messages are your sure you want to overwrite these files - well, yes you do.

after a reboot (might not actually be required - not sure) you should find that mbm5 now works in the correct manner when you run it.

Thought mbm5 wasnt getting updates anymore so wouldn't work with nforce 4. Is this a modified version that works with all nforce 4?

As far as I know Sumang who posted the files originally justed edited the program a bit to make it compatible with this board, not sure if it would work with nforce4 boards in general?

just a note for people:

USING PCI IDE ADAPTER CARDS

i used a pci ide (raid) adapter card to add a few more IDE hard drives to the system, it had worked fine on my old nforce 3 setup, i had had a long term problem of the system having a 1-3 second delay when clicking on any image or movie or sound file for the first few times, once it had been run once in rapid sucesssion it was ok.

i have replaced some of my IDE drives with SATA and removed the plug in card entirely, now the problem has dissapated. so if you're getting problems with PCI IDE raid cards then check this out ;)

hello just going to update the nforce 4 drivers since installing this board do i just download and install from nvidia's website or should i only install certain ones ie: no sound etc

oh and how do i disable the onboard firewall

any help would be great thanks

best bios settings and overclocks?

Hello all

my setup is

AMD Athlon 64 FX57 San Diego (Socket 939) Dual DDR400 CPU
Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi Dual Channel PCI-Express Motherboard
Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) DDR XMS3200C2PT CAS2.0 Dual Channel Kit
2 x 250GB Western Digital 16mb cache SATA-2 Hard Drive (RAID 0 Configured)
2 x XFX Extreme Edition GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB DDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Cards (SLi Configured)

Its the overclockers.co.uk beast of a PC the Ultima Extreme SLi AMD Athlon 64 FX57 Dual DDR System (FS-008-OK) if you hadnt guessed already, had it since august last year but ive never overclocked it.. its sitting all at default settings at the moment, I fancy giving overclocking a go now tho so any advice would be great.

Thanks

Dan

I hope some one can help me with my set up.

I've just built a pc from scratch but I'm having problems with the XP install. This is my system

Asus A8N-SLI Premium (obviously :))
AMD 3800 X2 (Stock HS)
Corsair 2GB TWINX2048-3200C2 (3.2.2.6)
Samsung 250 Gb Spinpoint 2540C (SATA)
LG DVD-RAM GSA-4167BRL (IDE)
256MB XFX PCI-E Extreme GF7800GT
XP Pro SP2 (Slipstreamed)
500w Seasonic S12-500
Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse.
Linksys Wireless 54mbps PCI Adapter Card
Mitsumi MMC Floppy (Internal USB)

So I've installed it all using the default settings in the bios but theres two problems. major and one minor (for the moment).

The minor issue is that the memory is being recognised as
Tcl (Cas) - 3
Tras - 8
Trcd - 3
Trp - 3
Trc - 11
Trfc - 13
Trwt - 5
Twr - 3
1T/2T - 2

I guess that its the first three numbers that refer to the Corsair timings and should be 2,6,3,3. Does any one have this memory and what timings do you get at the default bios settings? So why could these timings be slower than that specified?

The Major problem I am having may be related to the memory I guess. When I install XP SP2 (OEM Slipstream), I can partition the disk fine and XP goes through the install process. But its taking absolutely ages to install. So far, it has run for 7 hours and has only got 50% through copying files. I've killed the install at that point as I think there must be something seriously wrong. Any ideas?

Once I get XP install I thought I had a good machine for overclocking but the way its looking at the moment, I looks like it wont be going anywhere.

Thanks for any help.

Duncs

Edit: Just to add, the disk formats ok (ie quickly ;)) for NTFS quick format. when I accept the default NTFS format the disk activity light flashes about once ever 2 seconds and the progress bar doesn't move. I'm leaving the machine overnight to format (full) on a 20Gb partition and to install. I guess that the HD might be the problem or it might be the SATA interface thats the problem. I've got a spare IDE drive that I will give a go at the weekend.

Cheers

According the City Link website my Asus arrived today :D:D

I now have everything I need to start building the system but I'm a bit confused on what memory timings and dividers I should use. I'm after a decent overclock (somewhere in the region of 2.7Ghz). I know the memory can handle it (1GB Corsair XMS 4400) but what divider do I set in the bios if I'm after a FSB of around 275/280?

I'm just after a quick pointer so that I can get the thing up and running first of all. Once I get used to the settings I can have a tinker myself. :D

System also comprises of the following:

Opteron 146 CAYBE 0542
Sparkle Blue Storm 500watt
OcUK POV 7800GT

Thanks for the help

I'm having installing windows on the board. I've got two Sata drives plugged into Nvidia sata slots 1 and 2. I've enabled Nvraid and the two sata drives in bios (although the drives don't appear on the "main" page) and i've used the NVraid (f10) tool to setup a bootable 32k raid0. That all worked ok.
When i put the windows cd in it comes up press f6 to install drivers. I do that then press s and put in the floppy i made from the support disk. When i try to install the drivers it comes up "NVRaid caused an unexpected error (4096) at line 2108 in D:xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c." sometimes the error no. in the bracket is 1024 rather than 4096. If i just continue (as if the drivers have installed properly) it says starting windows then blue screen crashes. I've googled for it and found a couple of cases but no real solution other than changing floppy and floppy drive. I've tried two different floppies, another floppy drive and i've switched the floppy cable around and tried reversing it. No luck. Can anyone help out?
Also does it matter disabling silicon raid in bios as i'll not be using it?

I think i've found out what the problem was. The drivers that came with the mobo were incomplete and were crashing the installation. Something about the raid tool missing and the textfile being wrong. Any ideas where i can get the latest drivers to make a new driver disk? Nvidia website?

Anyone have problems withh the htt multi on this board?no matter how many times i set it in BIOS to 3 it always shows in AI Booster as 4x? Which gives me a fsb of over 1000

I'm having trouble getting into bios. Didn't have any trouble when i was setting it up but now it either doesn't detect me pressing "delete" or ignores it. Is this a common problem and is there any way round it?
Also it takes a long time to load windows. There is a 20 sec pause (where the screen is blank) between the black windows loading screen and the blue one.

lol my problm with this mobo is very wierd.

If i come down and just switch my pc on it does nothing....if i switch the psu off at the back switch it back on and then leave it 30secs it usualy boots.

if not i repeat the process a couple of times and presto it works. tried ram psus cpus etc and it does it with them all.

and i cant restart or i have to do the same lol. bios 1.011 beta

Just to update, I tried the IDE drive and all was fine. Windows installed OK. I ran the Samsung Hutil program and the drive was littered with errors. So its getting sent back.

I'm still interested in finding out what timings I should use for the Memory though. I have changed the Auto settings so that my memory now runs at 2.7v 2.5,3,3,6 but would changing any of the other settings help get me some more speed?

Cheers.
