**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

hello

just joined this forum. :)

there may be thousands of happy p5k owners out there.it does look a fantastic board and nice design for OC. but i thought id share my thoughts on the m'board i bought last week
(im still wondering if i should send it back? how long for replacement upgrade? :?

p5k premium wifi (about 135 quid?)

1. it doesn't recognise my MOTU audio sound card pci. ( but all my other pc's do!!) it does see other pci cards tho (usb/pci card and others) This was the main reason i bought it so i could run a quad core for all my audio plugins and vst instruments. isnt that odd!! are there diffrentt types of pci ?

thats my main concern.

i might have duff memory , im still runnning memtests but i also noticed with the board:

a strange sata 2 problem (western digital specific??) slow OS boot ups ...if you switch the sata cable to another port it rectifies itself until it happens again! errgg ..still havent resolved this.

like for instance ...when i first install Xp ..on the start up ,you know that blue bar that wizzes left to right? ...i get just one of those and whhooosshh onto the desktop. wooohooo!!!

set up the desktop as you like , put a few things in some folders ...but don't install anything. reboot .....1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8. blue bars whizz across the screen ....remove sata cable put into another port....reboot...1.2.3 blue bars this time..haha anyway...i must have reinstalled windows twice a day maybe more trying to figure out what it is ?..to try and pin point the parameter.?...nope , it varies.

but i had major problems with prime95. trying to get a stable test done with 4 instances ...
(q6600) hmmm i might have solved this ..i did a mem test on my pc-8500 (dominator 1066mhz) and it froze the screen ( i disable usb in bios ) try again ,still freezes ...i then lower the frequency to 889mhz and it passed ( i tried other freqs but to no avail with either freezes or errors) is this normal? :3

anyway i then tried prime95 at 889mhz/memory and it worked fine ..i haven't ran it over night yet but well at least its not freezing after 3-9 secs anymore.as it was at stock value 1066 2.1v

so basically my memory was failing at stock values. during the time i was first installing OS and setting the bios.

im to scared to install software on this new pc because i dont trust any component.its like itts gonna fall apart.

i need to spend a day reading up on these forums i think.

glad i found this place

peace:)

hello.

that was proably a bit to much babbling really ...sorry about that. i was so worn out last night after such a long time of computer failings.( and was sad to know i needed to pack up my MB and return it.

im not knocking asus either ..i will upgrade to another asus board!

perhaps a Asus P5E, iX38, S 775,

this ram seems messed up too ...might change brand? or at least ask them to mem check it before sending.

well, i did learn allot , thats the great thing about computers there is always something new and interesting around each corner.

peace:)

hi

when i try AHCI i get a blue screen of death just after the windows boot screen then it shuts down very quickly ...do you have to configure windows or format the drive in a certain way to have this option?

i see it in the bios ( raid ide or AHCI ) and another section opens up once you select AHCI.

im using western digital drives i heard there was incompatability issues with these sata2 's and P5k boards ...maybe this is a reason?

just searched this out: ( might make an interesting thread by itself??)

Common problems switching to AHCI under Windows

* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS will cause a 0x7B Blue Screen of Death STOP error on installations of Windows XP where AHCI/RAID drivers for that system's chipset are not installed. Switching to AHCI mode requires installing new drivers before changing the BIOS settings.
* When attempting to install Microsoft Windows XP or a previous version on an AHCI-enabled system will cause the setup to fail with the error message "set up could not detect hard disk drive...". This problem can only be corrected by using a floppy disk with the appropriate drivers or by slipstreaming the appropriate drivers into the Windows XP installation CD.
* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS with Windows Vista already installed will result in a BSoD if SATA has been running in IDE mode during Vista's installation. Before enabling AHCI in the BIOS, users must first follow the instructions found at Microsoft Knowledge Base article 922976 (currently unavailable in English, see this workaround using babelfish).
* Enabling AHCI or receiving a system with AHCI enable, will cause EPHD (Encryption Plus Hard Drive from PC Guardian) to error out when attempting to Hibernate out of Windows OS (such as Windows XP). The major aspect of this issue is that it can NOT be changed without reimaging/re-installing the entire system. There may be a root level fix not apparent on new (Circa April 2007) HP Compaq NC8430 laptops.
* Enabling AHCI in a system BIOS on installations of Windows XP or Windows Vista, will cause SATA Optical drives to disappear. A Hotfix for Windows Vista is available. SATA optical drives are not available after you start a Windows Vista-based computer.[2]

lol. :)

AHCI is nice, but i wouldnt worry yourself over it too much.

this install i've got now is the first one i've ever done with it enabled and i've personally found its not made a massive improvement. :) a slight one according to the benchmarks but nothing to get all excited about.

although this may be down to my abysmal hard drives :p

I've noticed that you can no longer get the P5K Deluxe new, is that down to ASUS no longer stocking it and because the P5K3 has superceded it? I know there's the P5K-E but I wouldn't mind the extra cooling :)

ah ok nps, sorry for accusing you lol.

What do people think i should go for, a abit p35-e or a standard P5K? Both seem good, the P5K looks a bit more stable, but ive read some reviews saying the abit p35-e has better overclocking stuff, even though its very cheap.

Should have an Asus P5K-E by friday...hoping it does better than my previous boards...tried the Abit IP35-E + Biostar TP35D2-A7...the bio was the better clocker out of the 2... as the Abit would not go over 4GHz...but both had bad vroop/vdrop and from what i've read so does the Giga Ds3r + vanilla P5K So that's why i've opted for the P5K-E as it's got the Vdamper....Just hope the damper thing works.:D

Had my P5k-e WiFi for about a week now. So far so good. Other than the IDE placement, i am impressed. Got my E2180 to 2.5ghz at the minute. All voltages etc.. at stock. Just raised the FSB.

As regards the double booting issue. This board did not do it out of the box. As soon as i overclocked, it did. Scared the living daylights out of me.:D

Its really no big issue though. I can`t see why people are worried/bothered by It.

FYI the vanilla P5K also has that option and it works perfectly.

Worth noting for anyone who is thinking of buying one :)

Thought it didn't work on the vanilla board or have they fixed it now?

Jokester

I dont know if i've got a newer revision (it did come with latest bios already) or something but certainly works fine for me.

*edit*

right running without the option enabled = 0.024 droop off the vcore, will restart and turn it on :)

oh is checking it with cpu-z while stressing it with cpu stability test an accurate method ? sorry i've never really gone into all this kind of stuff

*edit*

well under load with it enabled the vcore drops around (its hard to tell exactly without some kind of graph) 0.024 or there abouts which is more than i remembered so i take my words back its not as good as i thought.

But gayer than that is the fact that i set the cpu vcore to 1.28something and its actually sitting at 1.256 which is quite a bit off what i chose. But its stable (as much as i can tell after 5minutes anyway!) so i can't complain.

Hair being torn out!

How long should vista take to get to the point where you input your country? Its taking a good 7 or 8 minutes on here, and then another 4 or 5 minutes till you can select hard drive to install the OS.

Is there something i should be enabling in the bios, it just seems so slow doing this, last install got stuck at 50%, im at 51% this time, and its going a bit quicker, so fingers crossed.

You need to remove the competitor from your post matey.

Any smoke coming from a motherboard is not a good thing, look in the manual to see what one beep followed by 3 means, the fact its posting a beep message and just doing nothing at all, is at least a positive sign.

I have managed to get myself all up and running, seems to be fine at 3.2ghz (q6600).

Ill have a read through of the thread later to see if i can tweak it, im able to get about 13500 3dmarks with my 8800GT, so im fairly happy, 14k would be better though :D
