**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

Hi all, i just builted my new system last wednesday and i was wondering if it was a good idea to update the bios. I have never updated a bios in my life.
Is there any solid reason to do it? is the system performance going to get better?
Sometimes i read here worrying help threads, and i dont want to be one of them.
I plan to overclock too.
Thanks!!!

Unless the new bios solves a particular problem you are having then i wouldnt bother

Its always a risk - and unless you know of a particular problem that may be fixed by updatting the bios i wouldn't bother. :)

I'm getting the p5k-e wifi together with a Q6600 and 2Gb OCZ PC6400 platinum memory for xmas, will I need to do put in some cheapo ram to get it to post or will this ram be OK initially at stock voltage? (Don't want to run into a simple to fix problem on xmas day :D )

Hello, I have posted this in the Overclocking forum but this seems a better fit.

Basically have a E2180 and P5K, I went into the bios and upped the FSB to 250, 2.5GHz I thought. Went into Windows and its still showing as 2.0 then realised that the mobo automatically lowers the multiplayer to keep it as in intended doh!

However, upon rebooting and trying to enter the bios it won't let me, I press del but it chooses to ignore me and boots into Windows. I have no idea why, any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Overclock not letting keyboard work in BIOS / POST stage.. i had that a looooong time ago.

I flashed the bios (reset the cmos first to let the keyboard actually work) and it worked a treat.

although that wasnt with this motherboard so i cant say it will deffinatly fix it. only flash the bios if your comfortable with doing so!

Thinking of buying the P5KE Wifi and i have two main questions...

1) Does the built in Wifi work well?
2) Is the onboard sound decent?

I can say the sound is ok does what it says on the box, i had a problem with my sound it crackled when i firsted installed win xp pro, but did a reinstall and that fixed it. I dont use the wifi side but i may do in the future.
I have a odd problem with the wifi, it will not turn off in the bios, win xp always picks it up in device manager, so i ended up disabling it in device manager.

I've not had any problems with the audio on my P5K-E WiFi. I've not tried to diable the WiFi in BIOS yet as I'm using it (works fine) but I note that the latest BIOS released by Asus (v901) fixes an issue where WiFi cannot be disabled in BIOS :-)

Hi - Does anyone know please if the latest Asus BIOS for the P5K-E (v901) fixes the problem in the previous version (v806) where the CPU voltage was incorrectly set 0.1V lower than specified in BIOS?

I've just upgraded to v901 from v602 (having previous downgraded from v806) and 1.6V appears too much as temps are higher, but 1.5V does not give stability under v901. I'm thinking of downgrading again to v602!

Anyone else have the same level of voltage drop problems?
Should I mod the board or is it something wrong?

Isn't cpuz meant to be crap at measuring voltages anyway? Near sure i read a while back they were gonna strip that feature out as it was rarely correct.

Good luck! Let me know how that goes. Bios 0901 won't let you downgrade to an older bios.

I would also like to downgrade as 0901 is crap :(

Bu**er - same problem - can't downgrade from 0901. So far I've had to push my CPU voltage up from 1.5V in BIOS to 1.55V and still not quite Orthos stable (I get about 10 mins in small FFT test). I suspect BIOS is still reporting/setting CPU voltage incorrectly :-( I'll keep pushing the voltage up a bit until I reach the sort of temps I was getting with 1.5V under v602 BIOS - another step or two should do it.

Hopefully Asus will release a fixed BIOS upgrade soon.

I found a way to downgrade from 0901. Install this version of Asus update, link , and go to options. Check the box "allow downgrade".

That did it for me. I am now back to bios 0602 which is the best of the ones i have found.

If you have a bios in the 07.. range it might be worth to back it up before you flash. please send me a copy of it as well :)

odd problem as turned up with my p5k-e wifi board i've just tried to use a mic on msn a m8 rang my computer with msn, and a window pop up asking to run a test or something, first window ran ok but on come the second window and when i press next all xp locked up, mouse didn't move, so i had to press rest which i hate doing.
Anybody got any thoughts on this???
