**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

Doh! it probably would have

if the board doesn't post it automatically looks for that p5k.rom on a floppy/usb and tries to flash from that.

never mind, just remember if there's a next time :)

Good to know, thanks, although I hope there won't be a next time :). I'm getting confused with all those key combinations. Was told to hold Delete when booting, then the Ami BIOS recovery procedure is Ctrl+Home (with the BIOS named amiboot.rom), then you have the Asus Crash Free BIOS 3 Utility, which supposedly looks for the BIOS on the support DVD to recover a corrupt BIOS (yeah right!), then you have Alt+F2 for EZ Flash...

Next time I'll just leave the BIOS as it is I think :)

Hi, your board will not boot because of the low voltage it sets for your DDR from the first post. what you need to do is use a stick of low voltage DDR to post, enter bios, up the Vdim to suit your G skill then save and exit. when it posts switch it off put in your G skill and it will post ok. Use the black slots not the yellow as the black allow better overclocking and tighter memory timeings.

thanksssssssss,, it works well on crappy mem.... i'll flash the bios up the vdim and see if i can get it buzzing.....

thanks m8s for the help

I think it depends on the epp program on the memory ,i know on first boot my cellshock slackens the timings so it will boot as low as 1.8v

epp on the reaper is actually programmed for something like 2.3v 1200mhz so that isn't the reason. The fact memory boots at 1.9v is probably due to the spd jedec timings programmed in...so 1.9v at 800mhz at 5,5,5,15 or something is quite common for an spd column. The reaper has these too. Some memory doesn't or has very tight timings and high voltages programmed so won't boot at 1.9v.

How hot high is everyones' NB temperatures on the P5K Deluxe? Mine hits 46 degrees Celsius on a stock E6600 after it's been idling for a few minutes. It seems rather high, so i probably wont have much headroom to overclock my CPU much. What do you think, and what's the best way to lower these temperatures? I'm thinking of reseating it with AS ceramic and aim a small fan at it.

My mainboard sensor actually gets hotter than the cpu! :D:eek:

42c idle and 52c load after 5 hours of prime with a 92mm zalman over the northbridge area.

I'm very happy with my P5K :-) The 2160 is running at a very stable 2.8GHz (Noob OCer)

Does anyone use PC Probe 2 to monitor temps?

Mine seem very low... 9 deg Idle... 25deg after 1 hour orthos.
Mobo @ 30 deg.

In reply to Mansize_tissue's request of JumperFree Configuration Settings.

CPU Ratio Control: Manual
- Ratio CMOS Setting: 8
FSB Frequency: 350

Everything else Auto/Default.

Thats what I thought. Unfortunalty I'm running Vista so TAT won't run.
The others give the same readings although Speed fan core temps go upto 36 degs after 3 hours ortho.

The Antec 900 case is like an Aircon unit! so I guess it could be correct with this basic OC? With the all the fans set on high Mobo temps goes down to 25  (Sounds like its about to take off though!)

Has anyone Flashed to 0414 on the standard P5K? Is it worth taking the risk?
Cheers.

That's odd. It should work if you run it as an administrator; that's what i have to do. 36 degrees sounds a bit more like it for the CPU core temperature under load, but that's still really low. I can't see how it's 9 degrees Celsius at idle, though. I mean, your room is probably a lot warmer than that.

I'm running vista 32 and tat works fine, I don't even think I ran it as admin!
mind you hubby's got a p5n-e sli on xp and tat won't run for toffee. Seems to be a dashed fussy proggy :D

LOL.. Finally got TAT working (Vista driver update) 36-40 idle, 45-50 Full load..

So PC Probe 2 is basically useless then? (It was showing 25 full load!)
Why doesn't it use the CPU DTS? Weird since its an Intel chipset mobo.

Mine did idle around 45 degrees Celsius with my stock E6600 and reached 52 at load. However, i've added a second 120mm fan to the front of my case and it only just hits 42 degrees Celsius after 10-20 minutes of Orthos Blend. I'm going to add a 92mm fan tomorrow aiming right at the NB and RAM to see if i can lower it even more.

Oh, i also emailed ASUS about these high NB temperatures and whether i could replace the thermal compound they used with AS5 without voiding the warranty. Here's the reply i got:

Dear Friend :

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is ZYC, and I would be assisting you today.

Don't worry about the chipset temp.

The Chipset is designed to work at 100C under extreme situation,

it will not get burnt at all.

if possible, you can try to add a case fan, which is used to take the hot-air away from the case, that may
help to cool down whole system.

Thank you for using ASUS products and services!
