judge for yourself and don’t let the reviews sway you

I get what you're saying but with my current lifestyle, when I do get chance to game, the games needs to be stellar. It might sound arrogant but it's the truth - I really don't have all that much time and inclination to sink hours and hours into various games.

Similarly, it seems pretty unanimous that the game is a 3/5, 7/10, or thereabouts - whilst I don't dwell on individual reviews, the consensus is quite clear.

So why do it for this game and not God of War ?, Horizon Zero Dawn ?, Spiderman ? etc etc etc

I am the same, not touched the Pro in ages it is just Xbox one X and PC I game on. Never liked God of War, hate Spider-Man as a character and Zero Dawn just does not interest me at all. But this game is my cup of tea, it is good as well imo.

Me neither - but the latest GoW is not typical GoW, they're so far removed they're not even in the same genre.

Fair play for not playing for any other reason, but don't overlook it just because it's GoW.

Hmmm tempted now, my partners son has this so I may well have to borrow it. Thank you.

Glad I held off based on some of the reviews, I was really interested in this when it was first announced but footage since has really put me off. Perhaps a purchase when it's £15.

Fair - but how's it play? Are the mechanics of the game satisfying?

I mean I've played for 1.5 hours so hardly a decent stretch of time to form any conclusions. Based on what I've played so far it's solid and enjoyable...that may change as I get further in. Graphically though it's seriously impressive. Weather and lighting are fantastic.

A huge part of the annoyance for me in RDR2 was that the HDR was borked - not sure if you've got a HDR TV and or have RDR2, but can you draw any comparisons there?

Yes I've got a 4K LG Oled. It wasnt true hdr (simply sdr in an hdr wrapper) for RDR2 and was seriously disappointing given rockstar have the resource. This appears to be a proper hdr implementation and looks really good.

Not when I can see 'zombies' hitting and punching like a living human does, the combat looks garbage.

Do you think that may be because the "Zombies" as you put it are actually Freakers. Freakers are humans infected with a virus, ie they never died or came back from the dead. The virus made the humans Feral and cannibalistic, it also gave them sores but I am not that far into the lore.

About 3-4 hours played now and I'm really quite enjoying it. I'm sure it will get repetitive and samey at some point but most open world games do.

I didn't rate rdr2 anywhere near as highly as the critics and other people. It was an 8/10 game at the most for me, using that as a yardstick, given how well crafted the world was and how organic it was I suspect DG probably falls down in that regard. But in terms of gameplay ive had more fun in my first 3-4 hours than I did in the corresponding first stint on rdr2. The melee is satisfying, gunplay is average no worse than rdr2 which was average as well (think it's a function of third person shooters on a controller they just feel clunky). The enemy variety is nice from factions, freakers and wildlife. The story is engaging enough and I like that deacon operates in shades of grey rather than being a good guy.

Solid 8 for me so far, no glaring bugs at all yet, fantastic atmosphere and graphics. I'm sure that score will come down as I encounter the issues flagged in reviews but so far so good.
