Also bought an F5 last week. Really enjoying learning to fly it.

There’s a 50% sale on many aircraft and discounts on terrains too. Grabbed my son and myself a P51 each.

Annoyingly theyve recently bumped the steam prices up by about £10 per aircraft.

Might look into picking myself up a couple of bits on the ED version instead.

Took out the Mustang over the weekend. Clearly I've learned something as I was able to land it almost straight out of the bag.
Need to learn about the more complex elements of engine usage at altitudes, optimum climb speeds and similar.

Then I promptly downloaded some mods which give it the appearance of some other aircraft, including an F8 Bearcat, which was a WW2 carrier based fighter.
I really fancy learning how to deck land well in a prop aircraft. Already have a mod for three WW2 carriers.
So my plan is to:
- Learn how to fly and land on the mustange/F8 at a normal airfield
- Add in poor weather conditions
- Then transfer to a carrier in good weather, followed by poor conditions
That's basically how real naval aviators built things up, so seems a sensible approach.

Ever since I've switched to VR for flying, I've botched maybe 2 or 3 landings (talking tail draggers here, uprights were ok to land as it was). Also 3 point landing became the norm, rater than some ideal you read about in books :)

Agreed. For sims, VR really is awesome.

In between roles at the moment, so have some downtime, and thus time to fly.
Have been building up a regular set of activities to practice, including:
- Cold starts on a number of aircraft including the Huey, Mi8, Mustang, Spit, Fw190 and ME109. Have to say the Mi8 is awesome. 61 "clicks" (mostly switches) to turn it on and get it ready to go airborne
- Ground attack practice in the Huey, Mustang, A10A
- Ship strike practice in the Su25
- Slingloading in the Mi8 and Huey, including to a moving target on a frigate
- Carrier landing in the Su33, Spitfire and a mod aircraft, the F8 Bearcat, The props are really tough, as there's no wires to catch on the mod aircraft carrier
- Intercept missions in the F5, Mustang, Spit, Fw190 and ME109. Struggling in the NZG aircraft as the B17s really are a tough nut

Hopefully getting me ready to join an Online squadron. I wanted to be vaguely useful before doing so.
Additionally, wanted to sharpen me up before the 24th Nov, when hopefully we get the Harrier. Have pre-ordered, here's what it looks like:

You should check out our Dcs World Server
Havoc Company Dedicated

Has realtime weather (set at mission start) and also has a lot of training things to do, ground and air targets, convoys
and sling load stuff

I got into this very recently. I've learned most of the default su 25t and thinking about purchasing flaming cliffs 3 on the next sale. The free content offers a lot for a beginner and I'm having a great time with a x52 and Rift! Might try your server tomorrow hopefully I don't mess up :D

The Master multiplayer server is still down

our server is still running

you can use direct IP connect from the DCS Multiplayer screen, click Direct IP connect

Guys just a heads up if you are thinking of putting any more money in ED pockets .......
The new activation system (which they failed to mention) while trying to sell us the Harrier is as follows
If your PC cannot connect to ED servers every 4 days then your game will not work

IMPORTANT: AV-8B COPY PROTECTION CHANGE!

Dear all,

With the release of the AV-8B today, it is import to know that this will be the first DCS World product that uses our new protection system. Rather than use StarForce keys, we are moving to a “keyless” system which binds your purchase to your www.dcs-world.com username, and NOT a key. You will not need a constant internet connection either. The new system will just “phone home” after a three day period or the next time you log into DCS World.

This new system will also provide benefits for Steam users and Gifting. Once those details are worked out, we look forward to sharing them with you.

We strongly believe that this will make protection of your DCS World products much more simple. At a later point, we hope to apply this same protection system to all of our other modules.

Also, the AV-8B release today is for the Open Beta version of DCS World. Please make sure you use this version and that you update it today.

We must release all new aircraft modules on the Caucasus map first as not everyone may operate one of the DCS 2.1 maps. We don't believe it fair to force customers to purchase one of these maps to fly their new aircraft. We do though plan to update DCS 2.1 for the AV-8B in the next one to two weeks.

Thanks,
The Eagle Dynamics Team

There's a poll up on ED forums here. I'm lucky that this doesn't affect me, but I can see how people would be seriously affected by not having a permanent internet connection.

Voted for one check a month, let's see if ED take on board the outcome of the poll or just put the blinkers on and do what they think is best as normal.

They'll ignore it anyway.

With peoples internet connections these days I cant see it being a massive issue, even when I've got no internet I can tether my phone long enough to let it phone home once every 3 days.

Great for you, but what about the people that are offline for long periods ?
eg the fine people who protect our country ? they might have a laptop but no net connection
and the worst is the ones that are most likely effected ..... will be offline now and cannot vote

I voted for 90 days, because those that cannot vote need a chance to
play the legally paid for software in SP mode for periods of time without internet connection

Before the thread discussing the new DRM go shut down by mods, there were several people
with justifiable reasons for not being online enough to use DCS

Iam ok with logging in to MP mode , but for SP mode current starforce system works well

I'd prefer none.
Conscious that companies come and go, and whilst ED appear to be fine, there's no guarantees.
Implications being that if they can't pay their bills one day, their servers get turned off and we suddenly can't play it anymore. I know that a lot of games are now like this, but it doesn't mean that I want it that way.
I'd much prefer that we pay, and they give us it to keep and use, end of story.
