****Official Doom 4 Thread****

Sorry to keep putting a downer on all the hype, but this just keeps getting worse and worse for me. No doubt the short campaign will be seen as a positive by everyone else in the thread as it'll mean its more action packed or something.

its a mixed bag for me, the art design looks good and the shooting looks satisfying but the qtes look like they will get boring fast and I absolutey hate how demons glow when you can "finish" them, totally kills immersion for me, also the plasma gun looks and sounds dreadful

This is using the idtech 6 engine, right? So, that means no real possibility of mods?

Maybe:

Modding:
•SnapMap has a currency named snapCoins. These are not microtransaction bound, and are entirely just to keep you mapping.
•There are a Fully Star out Swearing of variables you can edit on everything ever in SnapMap.
There are modding tools named idStudio. These may not be available to the public immediately.
•idStudio is very powerful, with its own scripting, action chaining, map tools, and much more.

It would be more apt to think of it like plugins than traditional mods but there will be a sort of modding possible.

I have mixed feelings as on the one hand you'll likely see a wider variety of game modes and maps, etc. than other game releases due to it but on the other hand it will probably result in less in the way of truly innovative mods/TCs like in the old days.

I'm exactly the same. I just can't get excited about it. I loved the original Doom & Doom 2, which virtually defined the FPS genre but, since then, the genre has progressed far beyond mindless run and gun. I'm not sure a simple albeit, very pretty rehash of a very aged FPS model will still cut with the majority of today's gamers and those QTE's look annoying as hell.

Despite that whinge, I'll probably still get it simply because Doom is part of my gaming heritage (it's the game that introduced me to PC gaming back in the early 90's and made me go out and buy an all singing & dancing DX50 ;)). Watching the video's though, I suspect if it's just a fast mindless shooter with no real thought process involved, it'll bore me rigid within a couple of hours - much like Serious Sam did and that was almost 15 years ago...:(

Not too fussed about this yet, will see what the reviews say.

13 hours campaign seems fine though. You could complete Doom/Doom 2 in that sort of time quite easily.

I mean, you can complete the Doom 2 in 23 minutes if you are a master speedrunner, but that's not really the point.

I though the same about DN4E. I got sooooo excited when the first couple of trailers came out in whenever it was... 2003 or before. I wish they'd released that game. When the final version came out after 3DR fell over or whatever actually happened I just didn't even want to bother. I still haven't played it, even though part of me wants to.

I loved SS and it was kinda like how Doom / 2 was.

Tbh, I'm probably being a bit harsh on SS. It wasn't a bad game by any stretch but my gripe was that ultimately, it was essentially just a reinvented Doom with fancy graphics. The problem I had with SS was HL. It was already a few years old when SS came out and had raised the bar so stratospherically with it's sublime story telling, exploration and set pieces, it was hard to see how the FPS could ever go back to simple run and gun. It changed everything and forced FPS developers make smarter choices with their games. A new Doom that is bringing nothing new to the table and is basically a shiny homage to a game not 15 years old, but almost 25 doesn't fill me with confidence. I hope I'm wrong but, after watching the videos and being distinctly underwhelmed by what I've seen, my hopes aren't high.

I was the same with DN4E. When it finally hit, it didn't seem worth the effort and like yourself, I've never played it either.

SS was an absolute blast to play through in coop which redeemed it for me.
