Calibration matches begin at your unranked MMR, so unless the concept of "omg noob team holding me back" doesn't apply to unranked MMR then the timing of your calibration matches are unlikely to make a huge difference.

Yeah but I kinda mean I started playing ranked when I was about 150 games played. I wish I stayed out until I knew more about the game and could react quicker to situations. Now it just seems to be me shouting at the screen "why did you run in!" to people. I seem to be put against people that still don't know what Bloodseekers ulti does for instance. Tis no fun.

That doesn't change well into the 3-4k bracket I'm afraid, and from watching streams it doesn't change in 5k+ either!

The worst stage for Bloodseeker's ult is when they know they should stand still but they don't know how, so they just make tiny steps around the same spot until it wears off. PRESS H!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patch notes are out with some extremely interesting changes, including a ton of bug fixes, including most of the Meepo ones! But here's some of the main highlights that I think:

  • Jakiro - Aghanim's Scepter Macropyre range increased from 1350 to 1800

  • Legion Commander - Overwhelming Odds bonus damage per hero is increased from 14/16/18/20 to 20/35/50/65
  • Leshrac - Lightning Storm now slows its targets by 75% for 0.5 seconds

  • Ogre - Base armor increased by 1 (Highest EHP hero at Lv1!)
  • PA - Blur evasion chance increased from 20/25/30/40 to 20/30/40/50
  • Pugna - Nether Ward duration increased from 25 to 30
  • Tide - Anchor Smash damage reduction increased from 40 to 60%
  • Ursa - Fury Swipes is no longer a Unique Attack Modifier
  • Venge - When Vengeful Spirit is slain, her killer is inflicted with a negative Vengeance Aura, which decreases the damage of her killer and their nearby allies, until she revives
  • Windrunner - Aghanim's Scepter Focus Fire damage reduction decreased from -50/-40/-30 to -30/-15/0, and no longer has special rules for procs

Also, loads more files for Techies and Oracle were added into the game, including announcer lines and hero responses to Techies!

I know how, yet i still have those moments of clicking in tiny steps :( It's frustrating!

No more Earthshaker denying radiant safe lane xD

Did this the other day I was playing Axe and Earthshaker kept denying radiant safe lane. At minute 10 they were all like lvl 5 and I had killed them all around 5 times. Pretty lame truth be told :)

I don't think so it sucks when people do it on the mid lane, shouldn't be allowed in the game and it's been removed thankfully.

Pretty sure that camp is too far away from mid lane to pull to it, trees or not.

I'd have to try it out, but I think if you got a ranged creep spawn then you would be able to aggro the creep, run towards the lane and be just close enough that an attack from the ranged creep onto you would be enough to aggro the lane creeps.

Also, it's possible to solo Roshan at Lv3 less than 3 minutes in the game. Stout shield, farm up a morbid mask and you can start the process at around 2:30.

Stolen from the CSGO thread but this definitely applies to Dota!

Best time to post under that image ...

So I finally dipped my toe into the DOTA2 pool.

Played a few games as Lion and am ever so slightly starting to get the hang of it.

I want to start playing with some people who don't mind teaching me the basics and are not to full on "OMFG YOU NOOBS" when I die etc.

Anyone fancy coaching me? :)

It's pretty difficult to coach someone during a normal game without it being a 5 stack because you will just get tonnes of abuse thrown at you by the randoms and the whole thing can end up being quite unpleasant.

My recommendation is to choose a few heroes and then watch purge explain some of the basic mechanics of the hero from his youtube videos.

http://www.youtube.com/user/PurgeGamers

or simply google: purge plays "insert hero name here" He is far from being the most skilled pro but does an excellent job explaining hero/game mechanics and decision making.

Also give this a read: Welcome to Dota, you suck!

I don't know if in-house games are still going but when I was a complete noob they were just overwhelming and not very helpful. Maybe things have changed though. Still got painful memories of certain members running around with 2 rapiers and being randomed Chen when I could barely play Lich.

I have read that guide and had a good understanding of most of it. I guess its just going to come down to practice.

I will be back on again tonight for a few more games as Lion just to see how a fare.

Feel free to add me on Steam and drop me a message letting me know you're from here. I'm a bit of a lurker on the forums, but willing to have a few games with anyone. ~50 games in now and happy to help out as I can. Steam ID is 'sparr0w'.

I second the advice on watching videos - Purge is pretty helpful for this!

ETA - Anyone else is also welcome to add me. Always looking for people to play with.

Lion is a decent starting hero but I think Lich is even easier, it is literally just about impossible to lose a lane with Lich at low levels if you just play moderately safe.

In the lane you sacrifice creeps and use the mana to harass enemy heroes with your nuke. They will be at minimum under levelled and may also have to leave the lane. Buy tranquil boots and a mek. Later on keep using frost armour on your allies, especially the carry then when a team fight starts just drop your ult and the mek.

If you want to play an easy carry choose wraith king. Just be sure to always save enough mana for your ultimate. Maybe try and buy a mjollnir and use the buff on yourself, and then perhaps heart. Many many low players wont be able to kill you twice.

If you do choose to play Lion, please dont try to farm an aghanims, just buy wards and stuff for your team.

Play this with friends regularly, recently tried playing ranked solo. Is it me or is everybody who solo's ranked matches deficient? Everytime people pick supports and dont support, or 5 man carrys etc etc. Last game i tried we had two supports go bot lane and two carrys top but they wouldn't swap out :/
I dont understand how these people can survive.

The only thing about watching videos is that semi-high level play is nothing like newbie play. Its always dual lanes, picks and items choice are generally bad, supports stay in the lane etc. You can easily get mad trying to get people to play a meta they don't understand, its better just to go with it.

Heroes who look good at high level are often bad at low level and vice versa. Rikimaru crushes at low level because nobody wants to buy dust or sentries but he is pretty meh against organised teams. Most super hard carries are bad at low level because they have no lane presence and get no farm or feed in dual lanes so never get to dominate the late game.

Basically anything super annoying to lane against will have a good win rate, so picking things like lich, silencer, dark seer, sniper would have some success.

I find the intelligence level of someone who picks support actually decreases as MMR increases. Funny that. At least 50% or more of the supports i play with dont actually bother supporting, and start trying to play something like witch doctor carry or some nonsense.

Personally i love supporting, probably prefer it to carry. 13 wins 1 loss as lion now! about 100 wins as windranger and 92 losses. Most prefer silencer if the picks are right for it though.
