**Official Duke Nukem Forever Thread**

Oh, come on. You make it sound like the 360 version is running on an entirely different engine or, at worst, is a console that could barely power a calculator. I know this is the PC Games section, but surely anti-console arrogance hasn't made it THAT far yet?

There's an easy difference between lacking AA/AF and incorporating compression, and a crappy engine. For what it's worth, the PC demo also displayed the same horrendous, blocky environments and shoddy gameplay. It's also noteworthy at the time that many fans immediately started trying to convince themselves that the demo MUST have been a very early promo build and couldn't be representational of the final product.

Pity it is. Still, I see the apologists and self-delusional are out in full force as I suspected so I'll just leave my opinions there. I guess the actual critics will soon be chiming in with their opinions, which I doubt will stretch too far from mine. Here's looking forward to seeing said apologists then attempting to belittle the opinions of pro critics in order to convince themselves that this was a worthy £40 purchase.

Oh... wait, that's already begun.

Still bleeting on about graphics good sir and how did you gather that from my point? Consoles render textures a lot lower than PCs, it's just a fact.

And I doubt it is a case of PJS.

I think you just don't like the design direction. And please: don't jump to conclusions about my taste. :)

I gather you are entitled to your opinion, as am I. But you're not exactly giving very strong reasons as to why you don't like the gameplay or "graphics." Which by the way are technically fine but if you're issue is with design then that's a different matter.

Firstly - I haven't played the game - that will hopefully be tonight.

Secondly, no matter how you dress up consoles, the average PC that people on these forums use is going to a lot more powerful than any console. Thats why a bad engine on an XBox will be more clearly shown. If you have the same engine on both formats then, of course, the PC is going to run it better and obviously hard-drives are faster than optical drives.

Anyone buy PCGamer? What do you think they will score this roughly?
I'll have a play through and then put my guess in :)

Ever since FarCry 2 got mega-amazing 97% reviews I've never trusted a single game mag review.

I'll listen to what people on here say in preference - at least nobody is bunging us bags of £20 notes to write our opinions.

I watched the first 45 minutes on TotalBiscuit's youtube channel and it looked absolutely terrible. I believe there was only 3/4 minutes of actual shooting.

Sorry but that video was nothing short of pathetic. All he done was whine about not having guns in a part of the game that was clearly meant to get you used to the mechanics. He bypassed the vast majority of the interactive stuff, moaned about the glowing hints and then cried some more about wanting a gun.

The fact that he moaned about the hints glowing so much shows you that he just wanted to slap this crap online as quick as possible, with as much complaiing as he could fit into the vid. I found it amusing that he called it linear yet still managed to get lost, and if not for the glowing hints which he despises so much he'd probably be stuck in a room with his thumb in his ass.

He calls himself a fan of the original, yet conveniently fails to mention that what made duke 3d stand head and shoulders aboue the rest was the interactivity and the humour combined with the gunplay. And when he's just running past all the interactive parts he's obviously not getting a feel for what the games all about.

He might want to go back to being crap at starcraft instead.

My issue is not entirely with the graphics. I was "bleating on" about the graphics, because that was the point on which you engaged me.

Nobody's arguing the point that a console cant render graphics anywhere near as efficiently as a PC - that's absolutely true - however your insinuation was that any graphical issues (or lack of quality, which is different from "problems"/"issues") found on the console version were likely non-existent on the PC. That simply isn't true.

Essentially -- both visually and in terms of gameplay, Duke Nukem Forever is a game that is easily 6 to 10 years out of date. There's my beef. Gearbox have touted, and are still trying to pass it off as, a modern AAA title which it quite clearly is NOT.

The sheer corridor nature and build/design (NOT just the textures) of the environments almost immediately made me think of SoF2. Now, that isn't a bad thing at all... IF I'm expecting to play SoF2 as I know it and not pay full whack for it today.

In Duke's penthouse, look out the window. Look how the Mothership hovering over the city is actually a static 2D wall texture. Are you telling me that's acceptable these days for a AAA title?

Hopefully that makes things a little more understandable without the need for pointless bickering. :)

Quick question> Is the game disk you buy not actually contain the game itself? I.e. No point buying it because it ENTIRELY downloads from Steam? (Seems bloody stupid if that is true).

AFAIK the game is on disc, you just need to install it via Steam and Steam will load the content from the DVD. If there are updates in future, then Steam will only need to download these.

64% downloaded so far @ 5.3MB/s :D

It contains the encrypted game data but the files to play it are downloaded from Steam its about a 400MB download vs a 6GB download if you grab the whole game from Steam.
