**Official Duke Nukem Forever Thread**

The graphics I was expecting. A casualty of the appalling mismanagement and stop start mechanics of Broussard.

The level design, however, I am disappointed with. Duke 3d always had little side rat runs where you could find surprises. The levels spread out from the central 'straight line' route to the end of the level. It was necessary to explore these tangential areas to find the key to unlock the path forward.. Not open-ended but not a corridor either.

I ALSO hate the checkpoint system. There should have been a save system too for those of us with impatience.

Those are my two main gripes. As for the old school gameplay, I expected that.
To be honest, I'm not exactly a fan of the 'new school' gameplay such as COD series although I very much like the open-ended games like Fallout and Stalker.

I'm enjoying the game, despite it's faults, as my expectations were not too high.
It's Duke and in my book, the guy deserves some respect. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the remake of Duke 3d currently in production with the blessing of Gearbox Software.

I give up....it doesn't work for me past the 2 minute mark...I have checked all drivers (inc chipset ) and even rolled back a version in Gfx (Cat 11.4) and done all the things suggested as potential fixes on the Steam forum but nothing works...unistal and asking steam for my £30 back.

Not impressed.

This was all those games were ever about, they're known for having linear levels, easy mode kills and on the rails shooting. People don't expect them to be any different, which is why they will get praise, the question to ask is: "Why is Duke trying to emulate them?" Duke was never about any of that, which is where the failure lies.

Wouldn't say its trying to emulate them, we really don't know how long ago the decision was made to make DNF a more linear game, its very possible it was taken when they switched to the quake engine all those years ago as making 3d content was far more time consuming than making content in the build engine. In which case its just a design decision that was made over a decade ago that was never given much more thought.

Since when does Duke sit behind cover like a little bitch, carrying 2 weapons and wait for his HP to regen? Oh, in a game which bastardizes his name.

The changes in the gameplay i don't agree with, Gearbox stated that 3dr made that change but in the Jace Hall footage it was obvious that regenerating health was not in the game nor was a 2 weapons limit.

I'm a little bit stuck when you finally get outside of the casino, have had the pigs in the drop ships come over but can't work out where to go from there.

having some fun with this game, only played SP so far. you can run though the whole level pretty much or start interacting a bit and it seems more fun that way.

spent some time trying to find one of the ego boosts for the first level, didn;t take too long, but was suprised that this just seemed like natual thing to do, think ive played too much already :D i guess it's a spoiler for those wanting to seek out the ego boosts themselves

actually didnt realise you had to keep your friend alive so he could blow up the helicopter. he died in the first attempt and I had no where to go and couldnt figure it out.

Sums up my current gripes with the game also to be honest. The thing that really annoys me the most is performance issues on a fair few of the levels. Duke burger kitchen if I looked in a certain direction absolutely destroyed my FPS into the teens :S FSAA also doesn't seem to work but FXAA does, which I have no idea what it means lol.

Really glad I didnt pay £30 for this, what a let down from what i've read. Hopefully it'll be a fiver in a couple of months and even more hopefully they dont mess up Colanial Marines too

Meh, will pick it up sub £20. From what I read here I am disappoint about the weapons limit and level design. Those were the best features of Duke Nukem 3D

Now, I WILL be impressed if you get your money back :)
I am guessing it is a rare event for them to refund, but I have just asked anyway:

Dear Steam Support,
How much time does one have to waste trying to get a simple game to play before a refund becomes the only viable option?

On Friday 10th June, I purchased and downloaded Duke Nukem Forever from STEAM.

Once downloaded I proceeded to click play. At this point it installed the AMD dual core optimiser and a Visual C++ 2008 verison 9.0.21022.

The game loaded, and All appeared well until I get around 30-60 seconds in to the game and then It crashes, the screen goes into power saving mode and the PC is frozen with the only option to Hard reset via the power button.

I have trawled the internet for potential solutions, including the Steam Forums, and nothing has worked.

I have:

  • Checked all drivers are up to date (including gfx and chipset)
  • I have checked the boxes in the ATI catalysts software to "use application settings" for AA
  • I have Uninstalled the AMD Core Optimizer which was installed with the game.
  • uninstalled and Reinstalled the Visual C ++ 2008 Redistributable 9.0.21022 that was installed with the game.
  • I have validated the local files
  • I have deleted all local content and downloaded again.
  • I have configured the priority of both the Steam App (Low) and Duke Nukem Forever (High) via task manager, as per the advice on the Steam Forums.
  • I have checked & verified that I have the latest Direct X installed.

So many hours wasted and I have not even played the game yet.

I now give up and ask that you please also forward this to the billing section to initiate refund proceedings as I am irate and no longer feel capable of keeping my temper with this game.

Oh and before you point out that it might be something else with my system, I can play Battelfield Bad company 2 , COD Black Ops, and any other Steam game you care to mention for hours without a hitch , so it is something particular with THIS GAME !

Never in ALL my years with Steam Have I been so frustrated and angry at a game install, NEVER.

If nothing else I have had a little therapy going over what I have done thus far and attached a msinfo File for some poor Steam Support sap to pour over for all of the 10 seconds they expend on my issue.
Arrgghhhhh Nightmare !:(
