I felt the need to melt some solder this evening so I've just started. I won't be taking pictures of every joint but here's the first three components in place.

Sam, I've not looked at the circuit diagram yet so I've no idea what point you're at. If you can't suss it, I'd suggest emailing Pete ([email protected]) as it's probably something staightforward.
 
Ive followed the instructions shown but when i test for 170v between ground I only get 12v. Playing with the dial doesnt change the voltage as well, any ideas?

Check for short circuits, make sure that you've soldered all the dioes in the right direction (they only go one way) and make sure that the LM7805 and IRF630's are the right way round.

Also, did you forget to insert the microprocessor and/or is it correctly soldered in place?
 
It's a slower procedure than I expected, some of those pads around the resistors are indeed very small as are the ones around the two bugs.

Anyway, I've got the PSU stage built, tested and set up to 169 volts and now I'm off to bed. I should be able to do some more tomorrow and then that'll be it until the weekend.

Feek, i know it's only three diodes (well, it was when i first wrote this ;)), but that soldering looks pretty much perfect :)

Would it be worth having an '****Official Electronics Thread****', do you think? There's certainly been a lot of interest in this one project alone... i've got the beginnings of a new project in my head - a switchable AM/FM/SSB radio. Potentially with an alarm. Should get me back into the swing. Can't find much on simple radios (after a very quick look) - a lot seem to just be extensions on the MK484 which i can't help but feel is cheating a bit.

"How to make a radio:
Step one: Buy a radio
Step two: ???"

We'll see how it goes :p
 
That's true, I see what you mean, I just kinda like the glass look with them sitting on top, able to see the electronics through it.

I wonder if you could do these but take away the LEDs from the circuit and replace them or just simply bridge over the connection gap with a wire and by-pass having them at all.

I recon an official electronics thread would be a good place to start. I would still be going now if I didn't take my soldering iron run out of gas to go bed. Who knows maybe the thread would get so popular a sub forum may be needed? :D
