I really have an itch to put my name down! I know I'll regret it though as the desktop version which will be out in a few months will suit me much better. I just want something to build!

Can't help there as I already use a HeadBoxII for the desktop! If you would use the portable one though, I'd probably get one now because I think the group buys for them will dry up once the desktop version is out. If you're just after a something to build for buildings sake, have a look at velleman's range, they do all sorts of kits. Or maybe look at something Picaxe based and dip your feet into programming, this is what I'm hoping to do once I got some spare time on my hands after christmas.

Now I've got a grasp of PIC C, I'm working with a PIC16f84 and a 16x2 LCD Display to create a Tachometer for an engine.

Currnetly got all the display working etc just working my way through interrupts to code for the coil pickup.

Once thats done it'll be onto integrating something like a pressure, temperature or Wideband Oxygen sensor into it.

Anyone know of any good online electronics projects communities? Long story short, electronics used to be a major interest of mine, as did programming, but my degree killed all love I had for it. Beginning to feel like I might want to dabble again, but looking for inspiration for a project at the moment. Microprocessor based endeavours preferred!

Cheers!

Im playing at the moment, I'm working on a project I decided to tackle at the moment. Killed my PIC16F84 somehow though :( So I'll replace it with a 16f628A as its pin compatible but more outputs and program memory etc

This is the custom extruder configuration that I'm running on my 3D printer. All the parts were printed using the extruder that shipped with the MakerBot so it has sort of evolved. MakerBot Industries wanted around $200 for the upgrade kit to a stepper controlled extruder and this was even before international shipping and customs charges so I decided to go down the DIY route. It's been working fine since April this year.

Damnit, stop making us all jealous :p

Really though, those things are the future. Just as soon as they come down in price a little (or they become completely self replicating and people club together). Problem being that in replacing the need for a lot of our factories we also make a lot of jobs redundant. I think the world needs to acknowledge that through technology we will, and soon will, get to a point where everybody doesn't have to have a job for the sake of having a job, and that we need to move to a system where you don't have to have a job to put food on the table because of it.

Anyone experienced with gas soldering irons here? My dad recently gave me one but I can't seem to get it to work right. The manual says to light it and wait for about ten seconds for the flame to reduce and burn in the catalyser, but I've tried a number of times and after a long time I still only get a flame out of it as if it was a lighter.. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I plan on using it to put together my nixie tube clock.

Sounds like the catalyst is a gonner, finding a replacement could be difficult dependant on brand.

it might be possible to fix it; try to take it apart and remove the piece of metal mesh from the front, and clean that. it might have corroded. Also, make sure you turn the gas /right down/ after you light it, otherwise it will not reduce and "glow".
I use a "******" hot air soldering thingy as a hot air tip for soldering SMT components, works very well

So, has anyone pulled out their irons over the Christmas break so far?

I'd been eyeing this valve headphone amp kit for a while and somebody ended up getting me it for chrimbo.

I'm by no means an audiophile, but it sounds great to me. :)

Very tempted to get the matching VU meter kit that the same bloke produces to go with it now. :p

I have it installed on my mac but never really looked too far in to it. I'll have a look now but I'm pretty sure it's just basic stuff

Edit: just realised you can't use it through the day as it's only available for home use without a license

How much is a full built and working Markerbot?

About £ 1650 from robosavvy, or about £1050 for the kit. I don't see robosavvy as a competitor to OcUK, so hope this is ok.

I would recommend the kit, it takes a couple of days to build it, but it is very satisfying and you have a reasonable knowledge of the machine when you are finished.

Makerbot industries have a very detailed build manual which you can view at their site, I`m sure most people on here are capable of constructing one.

A cheaper route for self build would be a rep rap variant.I think that the best off-the shelf home printer would be the up! that pinter75 got a few weeks ago, it seems to give very good print results.

cheers
