It could be worth getting a board machined. I have just bought a cnc router and plan on having a go at making pcbs using isolation routing the tracks. Keep me in mind, would need one already designed though!
It would be worth it for prototype batches, cheaper certainly.
 
Flykiller bulb, yep that's fine.

I'm a bit wary of lights at the edge of our range, you can end up looking at a light source which is very bright but just looks dim to your eyeball.

Are you able to do dual layer with through hole plating for vias and pads? This is the serious limitation of most home etching/cutting setups, though you can make goods board provided you can stand to either wire through the via points or your design doesn't require a ground plane.

This is what I managed to find out online.

There's two pinouts for Left and Right. I'm not actually mounting it onto a PCB but attaching it to a case and connecting it up with wires to three contacts on the board. Do I just take two wires for left and right or can I bridge the pins and take one wire to the board for each?

I did try ignoring two pins at random and I only got mono :o

So what you probably have there is a 3.5mm stereo socket with a switch. I've never used one.
 
I was wondering if it would be possible to power a LED strip, the type you cut every two LED's from my house alarm box which has a 12v battery and a few spare zone connections? I am hoping to put the strip all round the door frame of the under stairs to give an even spread i light ?

The alarm zone connections are not for driving loads, they are for sensing relay contacts.

You will have an auxiliary +12v supply, but it is for powering alarm equipment, not lighting.
Say your LED strip develops a fault, it could overload your panels power supply.


Get a cheap 12v@2A wall brick from ebay.
 
Tried reading "Electronics for dummies" but I'm having a real hard time understanding the basic concepts, voltage, current etc.

Are they any DVD's or Youtube series that I can watch, I really need diagrams, examples, puppet shows to get through my thick head.

I have located the main power cable going in to a terminal connector in the alarm box, surely i can join a voltage dropper (wall brick) of this to power the LED strip ?
