**** Official Fallout 4 Thread ****

well the building is transformed compared to my console experience

so much scope...sanctuary looks so much better with a huge wall, strongpoints and dwellings with much more scope for furniture and keeping the settlers happy

now my main problem is keeping up with demand for concrete!

I also have the mod for more varied settlers.

I am new to the Fallout series, I played Skyrim way back when it came out and loved it, absolutely addicted to this now!

Although, i could do with a little guidance, currently level 4 but i am really low on Ammo, stimpaks and radaways! Also I have some terrible guns with few bullets

Any tips for for better guns and health packs etc?

Just keep on playing and keep looting! :D

Don't understand why they have done power armour differently in this fallout, doesn't appear to be popular with anyone. Used to be a must have, now a must avoid.

I didn't like the sound of settlements but I spend a ridiculous amount of time building them but I don't know why I bother, 200 defence rating and still the colonists have to hide when the super mutants come through or someone gets kidnapped etc...

I've played a lot of hours but without settlements and radiant quests I would probably have finished with it by now, not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

GT Reviews covered the same dilemma, that there are many problems with the game but they can't seem to stop playing it!

What I found I started doing was conserving ammo by using mele weapons as much as possible.

It also helped when I stumbled upon a unique weapon.

At level 4 that might be too early for you to get that weapon, but by level 6-10 you should be able to get it. You need to fight off a load of ghouls tho.

Do the Brotherhood of Steel quest(main guy at the police station, south of Sanctuary), he gives you a good energy weapon.

As mentioned, the Brotherhood of Steel quest chain is pretty good for gearing up as they're a military group and if you're interested in laser weapons you'll have a massive amount of fusion cells after a couple of jobs with them.

If you head into one of the urban areas between Sanctuary and Diamond City (Cambridge and Lexington I believe), the back streets are riddled with raiders who carry pipe weapons so you can get tons of ammo by visiting one of those locations.

Cambridge is also where you'll first meet the Brotherhood of Steel, so definitely worth going there for guns and ammo.

After 50 hours last night I finally built my first settlement item lol, decided that it was getting a complete faff to remove my stockpile of junk before a gun/armour modding session but NOT the rest of my workshop along with it so I decided I would create a steamer trunk beside my workshop and just lump everything that wasn't junk in there so I could simply "Store all junk" and "Take all" from my workshop when it comes to modding sessions.

You don't need to have junk in your inventory to use it for modding. You can leave it in the workshop. You can leave it in any workshop or crafting station in any settlement that is linked to the settlement you are in by provisioning routes, directly or indirectly (e.g. if you have Sanctuary linked to Red Rocket and Red Rocket linked to County Crossing, County Crossing will be linked to Sanctuary).

That's only true for junk - all other items you put in a workbench or crafting station will only be available in that settlement - but you only need it for junk.

I've built a large warehouse style building in Sanctuary that houses the settlement workbench and all of the crafting stations. I also have a lot of containers there:

Unmodified weapons and armour that I intend to mod and distribute to settlers and provisioners.

Modified weapons and armour ready to distribute to settlers and provisioners.

Legendary weapons I'm not using.

Legendary armour I'm not using.

Weapons and armour that I might mod and use myself or which I consider unusual. Gauss rifle, railway rifle, syringer, that sort of thing. Also a lot of Fat Mans.

Power armour pieces.

Alcoholic drinks. I'm building a stock for supplying settlements. Roleplay only, obviously.

General readable items and holotapes.

Recreation items for settlements. Bowling balls and pins, chessboards, pool cues and balls, basketballs, footballs, weights, dumbells, barbells and curling bars...that sort of thing.

In my quarters (which is still just a bed in the original dormitory that was the first building I built), there's a personal trunk for special items. Unique items that aren't useful but have roleplay value, like the "treasures" of Jamaica Plain.

I also keep my magazines in there at the moment because I lost two when I had them in display rack. One of the settlers was hammering at air next to a display rack and dislodged 3 magazines. When I went into the room, I found one of the 3 on the floor but no sign of the other 2.

Keep going and stay cautious. Everyone starts off like that - crappy pipe guns with .38 bullets. Then you end up with a less crappy gun of some other kind (for me it was a 10mm legendary pistol that did a small amount of cold damage) but not enough bullets of the right calibre to use it all the time. Then you start to build a useful level of one of the calibres you're not using (it will probably be .45 first) and can use that instead. Eventually, you'll have an abundance of almost all ammunition. .50, cryo cells, 2mm EC and plasma cartridges are still rare for me, but I have boatloads of everything else. The only ammo I buy is 308 because I use that exclusively and I sometimes dip under 1000 rounds.

The best tip for better guns and the early ammunition problem is, in my opinion, crafting perks. Modified guns are much better than stock ones, so there's your better guns. Since they are much more accurate and do much more damage, you use far fewer bullets. If you use an average of 6 bullets to kill a raider and scavenge an average of 4 bullets from them, you're losing bullets. If you use an average of 3 bullets to kill a raider and scavenge an average of 4 bullets from them, you're gaining bullets. It also helps with the stimpak shortage - the quicker you kill enemies, the less damage you take so the fewer stimpaks you need. Armour crafting perks help with that too because they also reduce how much damage you take.

With the right perk (I think - you might not need any perks), you can craft stimpaks at a chemistry station. I suggest following the main quest at least far enough to get Sanctuary as your settlement, so you can use the crafting stations there (it has a full set).

If you want a quick way to repeatedly get a significant amount of caps and you don't mind the negative roleplaying aspects, you can go Walter White and start cooking meth. Jet is made from fertilizer and plastic, which are fairly common, and sells for a fairly large amount of money. Making it will also help you gain levels more quickly (making anything gives you xp).

If you want a spoiler for the location of a seriously powerful weapon you can always get for nothing more than enough caps, here it is:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Overseer's_Guardian

Mod that with the right gun crafting perks and take the right weapon use perks and it's the only weapon you'll need at any range. It's extremely strong straight out the shop and uses .45 which is fairly common. Later on, you can mod it with a 308 receiver to greatly increase the damage. I'd suggest keeping it non-auto because unless you mod it to be a sniper rifle it can fire about as quickly as you can pull the trigger so it's still useful in a situation where you need to shoot many bullets as quickly as possible. Making it auto greatly reduces damage and accuracy and greatly increases the amount of bullets used.

EDIT: Since you're new to the Fallout series and are liking 4 so much, you might well like Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Many people think they're better than 4 apart from the lack of settlement building and they're quite cheap now, even the editions with DLC bundled with them. 1 and 2 are quite different games to 3 and later, so you might or might not like those.

You can buy concrete in slightly larger quantities at Abernathy Farm (Connie Abernathy), Finch Farm (Daniel Finch) and Greygarden (Supervisor Green). 50 every 2 game days, if I recall correctly. The station with an unfinished vault in it where you rescue Nick Valentine has quite a lot of bags of cement in it.

Re ammo/resources etc. early game, it can be a bit of an issue however the following might help.

As already suggested use melee against critters or lone enemies.

Invest early in the Scrounger perk and as a minimum Gun Nut 1 or 2 (this will require an Intelligence build and missing out on some Idiot Savant procs) which will give you more ammo and allow you to put stronger receivers on the guns = more HP's.

Take any meat you find or kill and cook it on the campfire at Red Rocket. This gives more health than eating the raw meat and removes radiation contamination.

Once you can do settlements, spam water pumps. This will fill your Workbench with surplus Purified Water which does have a weight penalty (0.5 per bottle) but early game will put back a good percentage of your health. Keep stimpaks for when you really need them, i.e. you are crippled. Also worth taking the medic perk to at least L1 early on as this gives more bang per buck for each stimpak. If you take the lead belly perk you can drink water from lakes or taps without taking a rad hit.

As I've noted previously, it is always worth making your way to Diamond City quite early even if you're not intending to pursue the main plot. (You kind of need to do the Piper quest to get access but after that can freeplay again) This gives you access to traders where you can sell purified water for ammo and most important use doctors to heal any rad or chem addictions. Typically the Dr's charge 40 caps for a full rad heal which is cheaper than buying radaway. Not just Diamond City, but worth discovering Goodneighbour and Bunker Hill to maximise your trading opportunity.

Unfortunately I've discovered that I seem to have a bug where this is not the case. None of my crafting stations share the junk inventory in my workshop at the Red Rocket station outside Sanctuary. It's a good thing I only mod every so often (when I get a new point in Gun Nut/Science! mostly) and not interested in the settlement building as this would be a complete pain otherwise!!

I have 220+ hours in this game and ironically I can't find enough time to play it. My gf doesn't get that a game can need devoted time to be enjoyed. You can't just jump into F4 for 30 mins here and there, as that's barely enough time to pick and plan a quest. The hours just disappear when settlement building comes into play!

I think I'll pick this up again later!

I was really excited for this game, for years! But I only have 28 hours play time currently, last played in December.

Life really distracted me from videogames :(

you only get shared resources with the local leader perk

its not a shared item inventory..only building and crafting materials are shared

so guns in one inventory are not available elsewhere...but steel, adhesive etc is

I think you can keep up with the concrete supply using merchants. Wood is my limiting factor, even with the merchant shipments.

It depends on what you're building and if you're using any crafting mods.

The concrete block in the unmodded game ("Shack Foundation") is made almost entirely out of wood. Which is silly because it's obviously mostly concrete. Concrete blocks in mods are usually made mostly or entirely from concrete.

If you're building mainly wooden buildings (including the stock "concrete" foundation that's almost all wood), wood will be the bottleneck.

If you're building mainly concrete structures, such as enclosing walls, concrete will be the bottleneck and it's much less common than wood.

Where?

I'm not going to install a semi-tested beta patch that might well clash with the mods I have installed just to check out some new signs (and paintings). The mods add extra items that can be built and so does the beta patch. In some cases, the same extra items. I expect Bethesda have people reading mod forums and looking at which mods are popular. The patch may well also add some building menu keywords, which would probably bring my installation over the extremely low limit Bethesda chose to use. If there was a patch which increased that limit, I'd install it as beta.

Also, what does "support for add-ons" mean? It can't be referring to mods because support for those existed long before Fallout 4 was made since it's part of the game engine. I've found a claim that it's referring to making DLC possible, but surely that's not something that would be added as a beta patch after release.
