Man of Honour
Well i must say, the game is certainly seeming more and more appealing the more you talk about it, I like the idea that people are helping each other, kinda how you would in those events.
Usually. If you look at Bethesda's forums, you'll get a very different picture. Lots of complaints about how everyone (apart from the poster, of course) is a selfish git who ruins everything. One of the most common complaints is that "high level players" (by which, of course, the poster means "players of a higher level than me") ruin all the events by doing too much and too little. And no, I am not joking. The complaining is that unreasonable.
There is a particular obsession with "legendary" mobs that spawn during an event. "Legendary" mobs are almost all extremely mundane and very minor mobs and they're very common, i.e. not at all legendary in any way. They drop an enchanted weapon or an enchanted piece of armour. Which are also called "legendary" and are also almost all extremely mundane and very common, i.e. not at all legendary in any way. But the prevailing fetishistic obsession is to regard these "legendary" mobs as being the most important thing in the game, more important than the events in which they spawn, so important that it's better to let the event fail so no-one gets a reward for the event while dealing with the trivial "legendary" mob in the way that the poster demands. Even when the event reward is a "legendary" item that's better than the "legendary" item dropped by the "legendary" mob. And no, I am not exaggerating about that either. There were numerous threads of ranting fury about the megasloth in the annual Fasnacht event a few weeks ago. It was an utterly trivial low-level "legendary" mob that spawned as part of the final wave of mobs attacking the robots that players have to protect as the goal of the event. It always dropped a random low level enchanted item with a single enchantment on it. The event reward, which required killing all of that wave of attacking mobs, always included at least one random maximum level (levelled to the player getting it, up to the maximum item level) enchanted item with 1-3 enchantments on it, in addition to the other event rewards. And numerous players were demanding that everyone obsess on the sloth and gently poke it to make sure that every player there can gently poke it and wait until everyone is sure that everyone has gently poked the sloth so that when it dies everyone will get the crap enchanted item it drops. Meanwhile, the other mobs in the wave are attacking the robots, so the event can fail.
In reality, it's even common custom to do that as long as the event isn't put at risk by it. For example, there's an event called "Uranium Fever" in which mining machinery is activated by a player and runs for about 7 minutes, collecting uranium ore. Waves of mobs spawn, attacking the mining machinery. Players must kill the mobs to protect the 3 mining machines in different parts of a small sub-area of the mine. If the mining machines are broken by the mobs, a player can repair them. It's either impossible or close to impossible for the event to fail (it might fail if all 3 machines are broken simultaneously, but I've never seen that happen so I don't know for sure) and the event has a fixed duration so it can't be finished quickly or dragged out. During the event, 3 "legendary" mobs will be spawned as part of the waves of mobs, one at a time. Usually, people will gently poke the "legendary" mob and emote a "come here" gesture to let other players in the event know where the "legendary" mob has spawned so they can come over and gently poke the mob. I frequently see players standing there, letting the "legendary" mob repeatedly hit/shoot them while every other player in the event comes over to gently poke the mob. Or walking towards other players while the "legendary" mob follows, hitting them from behind, to lead the "legendary" mob to other players so they can gently poke it. I've done all those things myself, many times. I have a L1 low quality very slow melee weapon (my character is set up for heavy guns and is thus almost useless in melee) that I carry at all times and have on my favourites list so I can switch to it in order to ensure I do extremely low damage. In that event, it doesn't matter that the other mobs in the wave are busy wrecking the machines while everyone ignores the event and focuses solely on the "legendary" mob. Sure, there are a few players who use their usual weapons to instakill everything in sight. But not many. Not when there's no pressure and the event can't be completed any faster by doing so. At least, not on PC. Maybe it's different on console. Maybe it isn't.
The playerbase on FO76 is generally nice enough to cause me to consider buying a microphone and using voice chat. Which says a lot as I have never used voice chat in a game because I don't want to deal with the fuss and bother of any interaction with people being ********* about a game.
EDIT: A couple of random examples.
I'm currently playing an alt. I started a new character solely to complete certain challenges that can only be done by a new character or which are far easier to do with a new character. But I found that I enjoyed playing a new character, starting again from level 1. Of course, when I'm playing my alt, to other players I appear to be a new player.
Shortly after I first ventured outside the newbie zone, with my crappy leather armour and my crappy guns, I bumped into a big mob that was higher level than me. The Grafton Monster. Not very dangerous usually, but it is for a player who's low level and badly equipped. Good, a challenge! So I had a hard fight that took several minutes, most of the ammunition I had for my crappy rifle and most of the ammunition I had for my crappy pistol. Low level players usually have a shortage of ammo and a big mob takes a lot of shots from an unskilled character with crappy guns. A much higher level player with far better equipment happened to be nearby and came over to see what was going on with all the shooting. And did nothing apart from watch, seeing if I needed help. When I killed it on my own, they gave me the thumbs up emote and left.
A bit later, I was venturing way out of my league for a quest and got swarmed by some cave crickets. They're fast moving and hard to kill, so I was way outclassed with my crappy armour, crappy weapons and crappy skills. I jumped onto a rock and did what I could, but crickets can jump too. A much higher level player with much better equipment happened to be nearby and came over to see what was going on with all the shooting. Deciding (correctly) that I was way outclassed, they slaughtered the crickets attacking me. I have them the heart emote, they gave me the thumbs up emote and left.
