**** Official Fallout 76 Thread ****

The multiplayer is very odd. I was doing some really immersive quest a couple of days ago. Reading a terminal about someone, soaking up the twilight atmosphere, when all of a sudden I hear a racket and Phearlord1337 comes crashing through shooting up the place. Took me out of it completely and made plain the juxtaposition of the two playstyles they are mashing together. Just weird although I have enjoyed some duo play with me son.
Biggest issue I have with Fallout 76. Private servers cannot come soon enough. Then I will consider buying it on the cheap. Server for one, yes please!
 
I think someone at Bethesda really, really hates that they had Obsidian do a game for them, which provided the community with a comparable experience of an actual story progression system that made sense in the kind of world Fallout or even Elder Scrolls could be and they only had a single year to do it with, it must really ******* grate them.

Imho Elder Scrolls Online, made by ZOS, is much better game than Elder Scrolls games.
If someone ignores the MMO part, turns off the chat and start playing solo, going to find is much superior game when comes to storylines and atmosphere, exploration and overall package.
Also is much much bigger game by a factor of 10. Before someone delves into the zones like Cyrodiil.
 
I'm not defending Bethesda at all they have dropped the ball here clearly :(

But there is still an enjoyable time to be had from the game in its current state just playing solo exploring & levelling up to get the required perks to complete the higher level missions. Some of the existing mission are quite lengthy in nature they just tell the story via text, holotapes & robots.

Judging by how few players there are online I would not be surprised if it goes free to play in a few months. There are so few players online now compared to the beta sessions you can easily get a server with only 2 or 3 other players. Its not a concern meeting other players anymore as so few are playing you would be lucky to find anyone in hours :eek:

I'd noticed that while watching Oxhorn streaming. Other players show on the map, so you could see how few there where each time he checked his map. But even so, there were still several occasions when someone else intruded on his play.

The lack of players is a positive thing overall, I think. The MP is one of the biggest problems with FO76, so the fewer players the better.

It looked promising but how can you have no npcs in the game. Ok you grind 40 hours but to what end? Doesn’t look like there’s a reason for any of it. If you’re ok with than then more power to you!

That's not true, though. There's a main story, various faction stories and numerous individual stories. There's as much "reason for any of it" as there is with other games. The lack of living NPCs is a handicap but it's not a fatal one. It's certainly very far from being the worst aspect of FO76. They still sort of function as NPCs, with their dialogue spoken from a holotape. There's still some sense of people, albeit very limited.

The main story is what caused the Scorched and how to stop it, of course.

And here we have another problem, as far as I know. I may be wrong, but I think you can't finish the main story solo. It requires a party. You can do most of it solo, but you can't finish it. Which makes sense, as FO76 is a party-orientated multuplayer game. Sure, almost all of the small number of people who are playing it are doing so solo, but that's not what it was designed for. It's what customers wanted, but Bethesda don't give a rat's arse about what customers want. Nobody has been sending messages to Bethesda saying "Please charge me $3 real world money to be allowed to build a slightly retextured door in my camp! Please make building even worse than it was in vanilla FO4! Please make it impossible for modders to fix the problems you cause! Please force me to play MP even though you know I want to play SP! Please includes lots of bugs that will cause me to lose items I spent hours grinding for! Please make many of the NPCs robots with really annoying voices and make it impossible to skip their dialogue and make them speak their full dialogue every time I come within range of them for any reason, over and over and over again! Please make me spend a large proportion of my time deciding what to throw away because for no sane reason I can't store more than 400lbs of stuff regardless of how many containers I build! Sincerely yours, a sucker who will give you money even when you blatantly insult me!"

And I'm still going to end up buying it because there is an adequate Fallout game buried in the steaming pile of ordure and insults.
 
I've seen some people saying that there aren't any stories in FO76. That particular criticism is invalid. In addition to the main story and the faction stories (yes, there are factions - all dead of course, but factions none the less) there are numerous side stories and they're fitting for Fallout, i.e. mostly very grim. Here's one story from one location in the game, told in various holotapes and notes and some environmental storytelling:

You find the corpse of a young woman with an odd veil, which triggers a quest to investigate Riverside Manor. If you go there, you find a large mansion and guest house that was the home of Shannon Rivers. The name might be familiar to anyone who played Fallout 4 - she was the voice actor who played the Mistress of Mystery in the radio plays for decades, the one who was dumped by Hubris Comics for the upcoming Silver Shroud film that had the two characters working together in favour of a pretty young woman who didn't fit the character at all. In her home, you find that her husband (working with Kent Connolly, the avid Silver Shroud fan from FO4) had a precise replica of the Mistress of Mytery's training facility built under their house and hired a variety of trainers for her - he knew how worried she was about playing the character on screen so he gave her the chance to train to be able to do it for real in order to help her gain the necessary confidence. A lovely story...which doesn't stay lovely. This is the Fallout world, not the Disney world.

After the war, Shannon Rivers used those real combat skills she'd learned when some raiders attacked. After that, she decided to take in orphaned girls and only girls. Boys were turned away by force (she presumably killed those who wouldn't leave and presumably some starving desperate children wouldn't leave), as were adults (presumably - the only adults mentioned were old men and nothing was said about what she did to them). The girls were trained the same way, forming an organisation - The Order of Mysteries.

But it gets even grimmer than that. Shannon and her husband had a daughter, Olivia. A big turning point in Olivia's life was when she watched one of her childhood friends being turned away to fend for himself (and probably die) in the post-apocalypse world because he was the "wrong" sex. Olivia went through the Order of Mystery training, but was skipped for any important role in the organisation. Correctly so because she was rather lacking in any sort of leadership ability and not a very nice person anyway, but it festered and took her further along the path she followed. All the killing she did certainly didn't help, especially since it didn't matter how many raiders she killed - more kept coming. Nor did it help that her mother kept the Order secret, not openly helping anyone, because the Mistress of Mystery was a secret identity in the comics. She came to consider her mother to be deluded, ludicrously trying to apply a pre-war comic book to post-war reality. Then she met that childhood friend her mother had dismissed to fend for himself or die because he was the "wrong" sex. He'd survived by joining a band of raiders. Olivia devised a scheme to become a raider leader, planning to unite all the local raiders under her command. That childhood friend was her essential liason with the most powerful local raider leader and through him she sold out the Order, providing that raider leader with information about Order movements that enabled him to ambush and kill Order members one by one. In exchange, she'd get a high position in that raider gang. Finally, she killed her mother and thus ended the Order...and her childhood friend then killed her because she was no longer useful to the raider gang and was now a threat. The raider leader wasn't an idiot - he knew she'd betray him sooner or later, killing him to take his place as part of her plan to become grand dictator of all raiders. So he had someone she trusted kill her in exchange for favour. You find the final part of the story on the corpses of Olivia and Shannon Rivers.

Now that's a Fallout story - grim and ugly and all round nasty.

There's a lot that's wrong with FO76, but storytelling isn't one of the things that's wrong with it. It's not just fetch quests that are for long dead people and thus completely pointless even in the context of the game.

The issue is because everyone is dead,there is really no motivation to care,and what is the point at the end?

In theory it would be better to repurpose Vault 76 somehow and live in the entrance.

Agreed... whilst that "wander about and read a book in fragments" approach to storytelling can work and is used to good effect in some games, the whole drive of what makes a Fallout game is having the player character interfering in the outcome... To pull a random example out of thin air; the sidequest from Fallout 3 with the "vampires" - there were all sorts of things you could do to resolve things; I think I pretended to go along with the kid's decision to join them and lulled the smarmy leader of the cult into a false sense of security before killing him in a backroom and taking his coat (because I liked the look of it)...

I don't see that reading half a dozen journal entries would come even slightly close to replicating that sense of agency you get from actually being involved in the story as it unfolds...
 
Despite popular opinion I'm having a pretty decent experience in Fallout 76, it's certainly better than FO4 for me. I only play solo, so immediately turned off any voice chat in-game and have rarely come across other players, when I do we usually just emote each other in passing. Not had any issues of PvP disturbing my questing and exploration. The lack of humanoid npc's doesn't bother me, the terminal, robot and voiced Holotape quest givers are fine and there is an absolute ton of stuff to do and map to explore.

The base building is a bit janky, took me a while to figure out when moving a base building to a small temporary one each time was adding pieces to my build budget so I had to learn to delete old duplicate parts when I got around to building a large base.

The interface could do with a bit of work, I use the better interface addon to help manage weight better, stash size also needs increasing. Lots of tabbing to back out of things instead of the usual ESC key is annoying at first but you get used to it.

In all I've not experienced any major bugs and the game runs fine maxed, although can look dated due to the old engine used. Saying all that I would not pay more than £30 I paid.

Sounds like an ageing engine with a concept no one really asked for and a buggy mess. Hopefully it will be in better shape further down the road but that's the state of gaming these days :(.

Oh it's just a nice modern engine used on such titles as Morrowind

They using the same engine as for Fallout 4. So a single player engine that has left over code from Morrowind or such and using it for a mulitplayer game. Good thinking.

Maybe these server stability improvements will stop the servers from going loopy when someone drops a nuke let alone three (I was in one instance when someone dropped a nuke and a few minutes later I lost connection and lost some of my progress even though it let me keep the disease I'd gotten in the process),
 
I have probably put in around 7 hours and I am enjoying my time in game. Solo play for me at the moment. Its not perfect by a long shot but its still early days. :)
 
15.01Gb patch on PC all the fixes are pretty weak though.

As for gfx its slightly better looking than Fallout 4 overall mainly due to improved lighting FX & newer shader FX on shiny surfaces. If they ever allow modders onto it officially then I can see some big improvements.

Right now even though it has a lot of issues I am still finding plenty to do & sinking a lot of time into it Solo even though there are a lot of bugs its not that unplayable.

Unless things change drastically though I can see it either going free to play or the price dropping a lot within a few months.
 
Looks and plays like a lazy, Fallout-lite cash in. Which is a shame, because the potential was there. It's all about monetisation over quality. After this, I doubt we'll see another SP Fallout for quite a while.
