**** Official Fallout 76 Thread ****

What can Bethesda realistically do with the next two games though? Assume they're locked into this engine and have investors to keep happy.

If they had any dignity at all you mean? They could pull the same move a lot of developers have done when their awful owners/publishers start ruining everything - leave with their self respect in-tact and start a new studio who (although they won't have the IP) can start making new games that are recognised as "spiritual successors" to TES and Fallout... Obviously that's a lot easier said than done but when the alternative is watching your series get gradually more and more ruined...

They could take a conscious decision to replace the game engine, then review some of the feedback about issues with 76, and apply a lead designer to ensure that they do something great instead. Surely that's better than throwing away more millions of dollars in development work on something that will also be bantha poo.

That requires reflection, hard work and honesty. The contempt they have shown customers at almost every turn with 76 suggest that ain't going to happen. The reason I mentioned investors is things like Destiny 2 who apparently are gunning for monetisation as a way to address lower than expected performance. Although it's their own making, the work needed to make a new engine at this stage sounds a lot.

I have watched a few more videos in the lead up to this game with the head honcho guy saying; 16 times more detail, brand new rendering system for lighting, the most work they have poured into a game. Proper bait and switch and the sheer cockiness from them trying to release a broken game.

And the collector's edition - for the love of God, will people stop propping up shoddy business practices by having no patience and pre-ordering. It's Bethesda's fault but we aren't helping by acting as if our lives depend on getting a pre-order.

The engine in Skyrim SE form isn't to bad (though the 60fps limit with physics is an issue). The big mistake was trying to take it online when it was never built for that.

They may not want to change it because changing the engine can change the feel and atmosphere of a game in a negative way. Especially if the developers now working there aren't as competent as the original ones. I suspect this might be the case which is the reason for a lot of copy/pasted code from older games (including bugs).

The core of the engine is 21 years old! It definitely needs an overhaul or otherwise we're just going to get a literal Skyrim 2 if they're going to just copy paste the code over to ES6. Todd coming in with utter ******** with the "new landscape rendering" "new lighting system", even though it is the exact same as FO4.

That doesn't make something bad. I bet bits of the original Doom engine code are still inside ID's latest :D

Another example of why I have to regularly tell people that you never, ever pre-order games. Say it again with me.

Also, class-action suit incoming.

“Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Bethesda Game Studios for releasing a heavily-glitched game, Fallout 76, and refusing to issue refunds for PC purchasers of the game who found it to be unplayable because of its technical problems.”

The attorney firm is also open to speaking with players who demanded a refund for the online-survival RPG.

“Gamers who have tried to receive a refund because of the game’s myriad glitches have been unable to do so since they downloaded the game, leaving them to deal with an unplayable experience until patches bring it back to a playable state.”

no what makes it bad is its fundamentally broken and has been for years and bethesda refuse to fix it because the community will.

Me neither, the gaming industry just makes me puke. And you get people who will line up and defend it, what goes on these people's minds?

It's pretty simple, something like this:

"I stupidly paid and/or pre-ordered this garbage product for £50"

"I don't consider myself a complete moron"

"Therefore the product must be good"

"and anybody saying otherwise is effectively calling me a moron"

"by defending the game I am also defending myself"

I think you've summed it up. Couple that with brand loyalty and you have the perfect customer. The lengths people will go to to delude themsleves that they haven't been shafted. How a corporartion becomes part of your own idea of your self-worth...amazing.

The engine is not the main problem. It is a problem, but it's not the main problem. There's a lot of complaining about the graphics in FO76, but those are superficial complaints. It would have been far more successful if the game was better. If the game was essentially FO4.5, it would have sold well and the investors would be happy.

I think the bag issue reflects the core problem. Some people paid Bethesda $150 for a hat in a canvas bag. Bethesda sent them a hat in a vinyl bag instead, don't even understand why that's a problem and publically replied to complaints about it by saying that Bethesda makes more profit that way. They really don't understand what's wrong with deceiving customers who are so into the brand that they'll pay $150 for a hat in a bag solely as a collector's piece and then dismissing their complaints about being deceived.

"We aren't planning on doing anything about it" lol

They aren't planning on doing anything about miss-leading/false advertising. Hmm...
